  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

Dr. Rhee was my OB until labor and delivery, when Dr. Shulina was on call. I had an uncomplicated pregnancy and vaginal birth at Mount Sinai West. Dr. Rhee might be described as no-nonsense and a bit old school. She is direct, non-alarmist, and will respect your decision to keep your process low-intervention (if safe). Dr. Rhee monitored my hypothryoidism and anemia effectively. After I hit 40 weeks, she asked me if I would like to schedule an induction (didn't end up needing it) and wasn't pushy about it. She provides just enough information, but may not be suitable for someone who is highly anxious during the pregnancy. I met Dr. Shulina at a regular check-in to become familiar with her, in the event that she was on call when I went into labor; I appreciated that I had the opportunity to meet her and ask questions in advance. I would describe Dr. Shulina as having a warmer personality than Dr. Rhee. Dr. Shulina respected my pain management decisions and supported my eventual choice to get an epidural. She was busy the day I delivered, but checked in frequently enough. When it came time to push, she gave helpful guidance that allowed me to push efficiently for just 20 minutes with minimal tearing. I also observed Dr. Shulina to give helpful guidance to the resident on service. Overall, I was pleased with my care and would recommend Dr. Rhee/Dr. Shulina to folks who are comfortable with a less-high-touch style. It may also be useful to know that both conduct cervical exams regularly in the last few weeks of the pregnancy.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

Dr. Shulina was always warm, caring, and super straightforward. I never felt like I was made to worry unnecessarily. I had an extremely complex end of my pregnancy and I'm almost certain that with any other doctor, I would have needed a C-section and wouldn't have been able to labor. Dr. Shulina assured me she'd push for a vaginal birth, though I did need to give up my aspirations of an unmedicated, mostly laboring at-home birth. Even so, I felt like I was under amazing care and my doula even commented that she'd never seen a doctor in the labor room as much as Dr. Shulina was. She's fabulous.

Dr. Shulina is great! She was also my OB for my first pregnancy. Both times, we had a great experience with her. She's very knowledgable and thorough. With my first delivery, she really advocated for me and made sure I was able to deliver at the Birthing Center at Mt. Sinai West. She always explained her reasoning for any testing along the way, and took the time to discuss results. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an OB in the NYC area.

Dr. Shulina is amazing--patient, enthusiastic and also direct/no-nonsense. She was a total cheerleader throughout my entire pregnancy. She is one of a practice of four doctors, and whoever is on call when you go into labor handles the delivery. So she did not end up handling my delivery, but was there the very next day checking on me. I ended up switching to her care about five months into my pregnancy, and it was the best decision I could have made--my visits with her were substantially more informative and detailed than my prior physician. Based on a April 2017 birthing experience

She's amazing. She treated me so warmly and genuinely shared in my excitement as a first time mom. But her warmth was paralleled by a tough and decisive demeanor that was crucial during my birth. Can't recommend her highly enough. Based on a April 2017 birthing experience

Love my OB! Dr. Zhanna Rutstein-Shulina. I delivered at Mount Sinai West.
  • [April2017babies] OB/GYN or Midwife Recommendations

I delivered in April with Dr Zhanna Shulina's practice. Can't say enough good things. We wanted to use the birthing center at Mt Sinai West and they are the only OB practice that delivers there (or you can use any midwife practice). They also have a midwife on staff that was nice but I preferred the doctors.

She is amazing. Warm, understanding and unwaveringly supportive. Second birth with her. Great for both first time mom's and those who have been there done that. HIGHLY recommend. The other doctors in her practice as well as all of the staff are great as well Based on Sept 2016 birth experience
  • OB at Mt Sinai St. Luke's?

I cannot recommend Dr. Shulina enough. She is warm, caring, understanding, non alarmist and very much respects your birth plan and wishes. Everyone at the practice is actually great. Only negative is the upper west side location, but if you are delivering at St. Luke's most are there anyway. I used her for my first and am now seeing her with me second! :)

Member Review: I was very happy with my experience with Dr. Shulina. My main reason for choosing the practice was that they deliver at the St. Luke's Birthing Center. They were very supportive of my desire to have a natural birth experience but they were also upfront with me about the challenges. In the end, I was not able to deliver in the Birthing Center, but they did everything they could to still give me the birth experience that I wanted. I never felt rushed during my prenatal visits. The only negatives is that they do tend to run behind schedule, particularly at the end of the day, and it was not unusual to wait 30 min past my appointment time to be seen. Otherwise I was very happy with Dr. Shulina and the rest of the doctor's in the practice. Insurance details: They do take insurance. I had no problems with their billing. Review based on birth of 2014 baby
