Description

Wurzelkinder -
die deutsche Kita in Brooklyn
Giving your child roots and wings to soar.

“Zwei Dinge sollten Kinder von ihren Eltern bekommen, Wurzeln und Flügel”. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“There are two things children should get from their parents: roots and wings”.

Wurzelkinder exists to give your child roots and wings.

Our program plants roots so your child has a strong moral compass, becomes a lifelong learner, and has a strong cultural connection to Germany. At the same time, we give your child wings to soar into life’s further adventure by giving them ownership over their own educational journey.

REVIEW: We love the space which seems to foster many interests. The space is large and open, and accommodates 30+ kids of different ages. Lots of freedom to explore; independence is encouraged. If your child needs guidance and lots of support, this may not be the place for your child.; Amenities: Has after-school options; What would you change? I wish the activities were a bit more structured and kids were scheduled to partake in those activities.

REVIEW: We love Wurzelkinder, a German immersion preschool located on the border of Crown Heights and Prospect Heights. Our daughter has thrived there and now speaks fluent German after two years - I speak German with her now but wasn't able to before we enrolled her at WK. Luisa, who runs the program, is absolutely dedicated to creating a space where children feel safe and nurtured so that they can grow and develop through play-based inquiry. The kids go out to the park every day (no bad weather, just bad clothes!) and do lots of fun activities throughout the year.; Amenities: Has after-school options; What would you change? there currently isn't afterschool on Fridays
  • Wurzelkinder Preschool Recommendation

I'm writing to share some information about our child's preschool, Wurzelkinder, which is located near the Brooklyn Museum on the border of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights. Our son has been attending Wurzelkinder for his second year and we could not be more pleased. We toured many preschools and this one was above and beyond others (we also liked Choo Choo Train Project and Maple Street) and we ultimately chose Wurzelkinder because of the German immersion, STEM/nature focus and terrific leadership of the founder, Luisa Gessler. I like the team and child to teacher ratio (there are about ~24 kids ranging from 2.5-5 years old with ~6 teachers, the curriculum (science/STEM focused but also quite diverse in its offerings), creativity, and focus on outdoor play/access to nature (Prospect Park). We especially appreciate the focus on international families and cultural diversity. All holidays are celebrated, which includes German and European traditions but also American traditions and 'Brooklyn' culture. I am not German (nor do I speak German) so I appreciate that this school isn't a typical expat bubble. I also like that my child learned German in about 1 year and is now fluent. For kindergarten next year, we are sending him to the public school system and we feel that he is well-prepared and his English and German are both excellent. Moreover, he has an IEP and this school worked closely with us to implement it and support him. The space is beautiful (two levels) and the parent community is terrific. The teachers are fantastic, highly educated and are committed. It's a different level in the most positive way. We cannot recommend this preschool enough. There are families who travel from Carroll Gardens and I understand why because it is a terrific school. Please email me with any questions if you are interested in the programming. I'm in no way affiliated with the school other than being a parent and fan of the programming.

Type of facility: Preschool Review: Our son comes home from Wurzelkinder excited to recount his school day every single day. He does so using a rapidly-expanding German vocabulary, as his ability to express himself in German has improved remarkably since starting there. His caring teachers took the time to accustom him to what is now a familiar drop off, meal and nap routine, within which he is exposed to a rich variety of learning experiences: whether digging for worms in Wurzelkinder’s expansive yard, exploring using a magnifying glass, or working on art projects and building social skills. He loves his teachers and his school, and we couldn’t be happier with his experience there. What amenities does the facility provide? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Nothing, it is really exceeding our expectations Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? One of the best safety protocols we’ve seen: in addition to lots of outdoor time, a small group and a safe space, the kids wear masks and the teachers ensure they change their masks 3x per day as little kids have a hard time keeping their masks clean
