  • Experience with TLC Preschool?

    Both of my older kids went there. Youngest one went to early intervention (kids with disabilities are all they serve now) from age 2-5. It's a fantastic organization, with a lot of great teachers, and excellent therapists.

It's such a great community, lots of collaboration and communication between classrooms and staff. The program is play based, but focused on kindergarten readiness. The day is structured and there are a lot of transitions so kids get used to that. Staff is always available for parents and very very loving with the kids (July 2017 review)

It's such a warm and loving place -- not just the teachers, who truly love the kids, the entire staff is just lovely. It's like a big family. The kids really become friends. I loved the integrated classroom (our son has no special needs), and the diversity . Our son did a lot of art, clearly had fun, and even learned to write his name. They have a rooftop playground, they do little trips, and lunch is included. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Can't think of anything (July 2017 review)

    Type: Preschool About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals Review: TLC has 3s classes, as well as UPK. It is a super-loving, nurturing, creative, and lovely place. My children have thrived there. There are a lot of supports in place, for kids who need them, such as PT, OT, Speech, and ICT and self-contained classrooms. Teachers are happy and helpful. Administration has been great to work with. I feel TLC is one of Park Slope's best kept secrets! (July 2017 review)

  • Re: All day pre-school recs?

    TLC (therapy and learning center) has a great full day program for 3 year-olds. It's located on 18th and 8th avenue. They have small classrooms with a lot of support (3 teachers, 12-15 kids). My son is currently in the 3's class and we love it. We'll be staying there for UPK as well. Let me know if you have any questions! (April 2017 review)

  • South Slope preschool/pre K advice

    Another South Slope option is Therapy and Learning Center at 8th Ave/18th. For some reason it doesn't seem to be on people's radar, but they do have UPK. My older son went there, and my younger son is attending now. It is a super loving and nurturing place. All the classes there are ICT, with 1 teacher and 2 assistants, so there is a lot of support in the classroom. They really are able to see each kid as an individual and give them the engagement they need. Just another option to consider.... (January 2017 review)

    Review: We LOVE TLC! It's been a great segway from all play-based, loose structure preschool to get her ready for kindergarten. They still play all the time, but everything is structured into 30 (ish) minute sections: centers, circle time, music, outdoor play, lunch, rest time, etc. TLC really feels like a community: all of the other pre-k teachers (there are 4 classes) know my daughter, the support staff all know her, the director of the school is lovely, there's excellent communication between her teachers and us and the teachers are all so loving and sweet.     Age of Child: 5 Likes: The program was more like school than a typical camp program - it was calm and very low key. I have a child with special needs who does not handle transitions and water very well, so a regular camp where kids are shuffled from location to location and are required to go swimming would not work for him. This was perfect. What would you change? Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Recommend Do you have any other information to add? TLC offers summer "camp" classes that are integrated with two teachers - one regular and one special Ed. For a child with special needs this is an especially great place because the school specializes in these kids and also offers therapy (OT, PT, Speech) for those who are approved for summer services.   • 2014 Daycare/Preschool PSP review

    Program: Gen Ed Length of Time: Full Time Child's Age: 3-4 years Review: My son was in the 3s class last year and preK this year. The teachers and the facility is great. My son is so happy and has learned a lot. The learning is play based, I don't think he knows the concept of a worksheet. He recognized letters and numbers and sounds. The classes are mixed with general education kids and kids with IEPs. We do not need services but if we did, the services are on site. There are 3 teachers in the classroom. He has made wonderful friends. The executive director is not a great communicator but the education director is. Extended day only goes until 4pm, the regular school day is 8:25-2:30. Recommend (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend Would you send your child again? Absolutely (November 2014 review)

My daughter was a full-time gen ed student for two years. She had an excellent experience. One of the lead teachers she had was very experienced, the other was running a classroom for the first time since graduating from her training program. Both classrooms were very loving and nurturing. There are 3 teachers in each class, 15 kids in a class. The facility is really nice -- built to be a preschool, has a rooftop play space, the equipment and materials are all in good condition. My daughter skipped into school every morning and often did not want to leave at the end of the day. Best of all for her parents is that TLC is a Universal Pre-K site with funding for full-day PreK-4, which is to say that our second year there we did not pay a dime for full-day preK.     Review date June 2013 (for 2012-2013 year) Program: "threes program" Length of time: Full day, 3 days/week Child's age: 4-5 years Review: The teacher and her two assistants are wonderful and caring. Our son is finishing the threes program and will be returning for pre-k next year. Lots of play and crafts projects relating to a weekly theme. They have "music class" once a week, which is nice. The program is "inclusive" in that the class is mixed special needs and non-special needs. All of the teachers have special education backgrounds and because of this the general consensus is that they are a bit too hyper-vigilant about diagnosing special needs where parents see none. The buzzword of the day is "sensory issues," which seems to apply to any 3 or 4 year old boy that likes to play and doesn't necessarily want to be stuck in a classroom for hours on end, no matter how fun the toys or activities might be. Can you blame them? TLC does have a very nice rooftop playground that the kids get to go up and run around on, sometimes twice a day. Unfortunately, the nurse is also a bit hyper-vigilant about not letting them go up their if it is a little too chilly... The head of the school is new and families with older children who had dealings the the previous head say that the knew head is much harder to deal with/doesn't seem to be in touch with the needs of parents. The facility is very nice. It is a large school and teachers and administrators don't seem to have the time or inclination to go out of their way to provide parents feedback, but will make time to discuss things when pressed. TLC is very strict about pick up and drop off policies. Not the type of place where you can drop off your kid one minute late even though the kids who arrived 1 minute earlier are still hanging up their coats and backpacks. Do you recommend?     Review date June 2013 (for 2012-2013 year) Program: Pre-K Length of time: Full time Child's age: 4-5 years Review: We've had a wonderful experience at TLC this year. Our daughter loved all three of her teachers (4 by the year's time) and had a fantastic year. This after a very miserable unhappy experience at age 3.5 at a small play school. The teachers were all understanding about her slow to warm personality, and handled her dietary restriction (she has celiac) very well. On one of the very few days my daughter had trouble separating, I was able to call the school shortly after drop off and the wonderfully kind receptionists checked on how my daughter was doing, reassuring me. It was a great experience for us and our daughter. Do you recommend? (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend
