Terry is truly a very experienced and special doula. She is a doula trainer, so she has a wealth of knowledge and experience. She also has strong positive relationships with many hospitals and Ob/Gyns in the city. Her fees are higher as a result, but it was worth every penny for us. We had our baby during the height of COVID, and while doulas were allowed at that time, I tested positive so we decided to work with her just on the phone. We got limited support from the hospital because we tested positive, so we really could not have done it without Terry. She coached my husband through how to support me throughout the night. She ensured we did not get unnecessary medication until we were ready, and she advocated for me when I was very dilated but the monitors were not picking it up. Finally, she gave me pushing advice that saved a lot of time and agony, and she helped us make sure that we got the delayed cord clamping and skin to skin that we needed. I would 100% recommend Terry to anyone!

She was amazing!!!! She has tons of experience and is very flexible. She does not come in with her own agenda, but is happy to support you through whatever you want or however it goes. Also, during my unmedicated labor, she had all kinds of cool moves and tricks to get me through the pain, and she had a great relationship with my OB team (Village OB), so they worked together really well. I can't recommend her highly enough.

  • Re: DOULA ADVICE-- Let us have it!

I used Terry Richmond from Birthday Presence as a labor support doula and am so appreciative that I did so. Then I used Diana Antonelli as a post-partum doula and similarly had a good experience. This was in 2005 so it’s been a while but here’s my story. LABOR SUPPORT - We went to Terry’s Bradley Method labor prep class at the Park Slope YMCA and were impressed with Terry (who had worked with and was friends with my cousin so we had a reference already). So we hired her, and at the time she had a sliding scale depending on what you could pay which I really appreciated. We found that she had a lot of levity and added sanity to what for us was scary. I went into labor on a Tuesday and by midnight it was obvious I needed Terry’s help overnight, so I called and she came over and we all went to the hospital in the middle of the night. I gave birth around 10 a.m. and Terry was so helpful. I used Dr. Rhee’s medical practice and the goal was to use the Roosevelt Hospital birthing center but I had back labor so needed a spinal to handle the labor, which I got at about 9 cm dilated as I recall. In the end delivery was a breeze as my son had righted himself, but then his lungs collapsed from inhaling meconium during delivery and Terry ended up staying longer than she usually would post-partum because of the unusual circumstances (which had spooked everyone, thank goodness we were in a hospital when this happened or my son might not have made it – he was fine in seconds and it was ok but still), we processed what happened with Terry. Being in L&D with Terry helped, especially because my water hadn’t broken until near the end and my contractions were REALLY far apart even fully dilated so I was getting a lot of pressure to take Pitocin to speed things up and she helped gently push back and help things go more naturally in labor and delivery – the pressure to speed things up seemed to have everything to do with peoples’ very busy schedules and keeping hospital costs lower but I wasn’t in a hurry and didn’t like being rushed through something natural during the pushing stage, so Terry helped moderate that and I don’t regret having her there at all.

I cannot say enough good things about our doula, Terry Richmond (doulaterry.com). She was absolutely incredible. She was the doula for our daughter's birth and also for the births of at least 3 of our friends' babies. Everyone we've recommended to her loved her as well. She is the most experienced doula I found. And also the warmest, most dedicated. Best of luck June 2012
