  • Virtual Lactation Consult?

I used Tamara Hawkins. She accepted my insurance and I was able to set up an appointment quickly.

Based on the upper east side with is a bit of a trek from Brooklyn, but well worth the trip. Tamara helped immensely with some issues I was experiencing as a result of surgery on my one breast. She also accepts insurance which is a big plus. Based on May 2017 birthing experience

Credentials: Lactation Consultant, Nurse Practitioner Review: I sought Tamara Hawkins help when my son was 8 weeks old. I struggled with nursing as my son was in the NICU for a week and not able to breastfeed at all feedings. I was only taught one nursing position at the hospital and was experiencing extreme back pain, nipple pain, and my son was having a very hard time latching. Tamara takes a few different insurances which was great, as I only had to pay a copay for my son. She really helped me figure out more comfortable positions to nurse him in, how to make sure his latch was correct, and how to reduce my nipple pain. She didn't rush me at all in our 90 minute session and really reassured me that I could do it. I would recommend Tamara to anyone who needs help with nursing. What the lactation consultants taught me in the hospital was basically useless. Thank goodness for Tamara! Insurance: I sought Tamara Hawkins help when my son was 8 weeks old. Though Tamara has a 212 number, she will come to your place in Brooklyn. Tamara is the lactation consultant for Cornell-Weill Hospital who also does house calls. She was a OB/GYN nurse prior to being a lactation consultant so she knows a lot of the doctors well. I met Tamara in the hospital at a breastfeeding clinic. I was having problems on day 2 with latching and she made one adjustment and then we off and running. A couple of months later, Tamara came out to my house for a very reasonable fee (about half of what other consultants charge) and spent an hour and a half with me. She did an analysis, observation and gave me an informative two page set of instructions on my problems. She called me every day to see how I was doing for 3 weeks! She even went over to my OB/GYN doctor for me and got him to write a perscription for me to help with my milk flow. Apparently, they had worked together and he respected her suggestion for the medication enough to write me a perscription on the spot. She even mailed me the perscription when I was away on vacation. After 2 other lactation consultants, I can recommend her very highly. She is patient, empathetic, very generous with her time and, overall, very knowlegeable about her profession. (Date 7/07)
