Description

Smith Street Workshop is a tutoring, educational enrichment center and French Immersion Preschool in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. We work with students from Pre-K through high school.

We provide individual and group tutoring, Common Core and SHSAT test prep, afterschool French programs run by bilingual educators, and a French Immersion Summer Camp.

Our teaching philosophy is based in the traditions of progressive education with a firm belief in respecting children as learners and in understanding that we do not all learn at the same rate or in the same way.
We look forward to helping your child discover the joy of learning and a sense of wonder when faced with intellectual challenges.

  • ISO Quality SHSAT Class

My son went to Smith Street Workshop and took private lessons. He’s a freshman at Bronx Science now. Even though he is a really good student, he would not have gotten in without the prep. We were glad to have heard about this shop from PSP.
  • SHSAT prep recommendations?

There are lots of options depending on what you want. Kweller is the most expensive and most hard core. Lots of Brooklyn kids go to Smith street workshop which is a little more laid back. We did a bit of both Kweller and Smith but for us shsat was relatively low stakes so we only did a few weeks before the test. Lots of people use private tutors and they are not necessarily more expensive. (November 2019)

We are currently working with Michael Cancella at Smith Street workshop and he is great.
  • 2019 Summer Camp Review

This French language camp is lovely. It’s intimate and organized and my son has loved it the past two years. He enjoyed being the oldest this year. My son is bilingual and thrives in structure so this type of camp is perfect for him. I’m not sure all 6yo would enjoy it, but I think it’s pretry perfext What would you change? More older kids?
  • Review from the 2018/2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey

Fantastic new immersion language (French) preschool. Love the brand new facility, small class, teachers and teachers aides. It’s extremely hard to find alternative language schools here and this one is great. We have one parent who speaks French but English is spoken by both parents in the home. Our daughter loves the program which focuses on exploring language while playing, doing crafts, experiencing texture, and music/reading. Offers variety of days/full and half days. Con - wish it was closer to park slope. About the facility: Has early morning hours, French immersion What would you change? Nothing. Wish there was a closer location.

Age of child: 5.5 Summer 2018 Review: If you have a Francophone this is a fabulous camp! My son is in DLFP at PS 133 and he didn’t speak French to his dad until he spent 5 weeks at this camp. The space is gorgeous, teachers are kind and thoughtful and do amazing art work and the owner is wonderful. If your child thrives in a school-like camp like mine does, send him here! You can also attend if you want French Immersion but aren’t a french speaker. My son has some special needs and they were lovely about that as well
