Where are you sending your 7-10 year olds for camp this summer?
Silver Gull Beach Club in the Rockaways is beautiful and has a free camp for members who purchase an accommodation (cabana, etc.) that runs 12:30 p.m.-4:15 p.m. You can send kids with money to buy lunch in the cafeteria or pack them a lunch or feed them before camp. They swim every day and it's entirely outside (there is an open-air camp shack for shade). No screens, classic camp activities. You do need to tip the counselors every week; I think the recommendation is $25 per kid per week. The cost of a beach club membership and accommodation is a lot less than traditional camp in Brooklyn for two kids, but of course you need to get them there and it's only half of the day. As a bonus, there are reasonably priced private swimming lessons in the pool with a great college student who has taught two of our kids to swim. This will be our third year there and we love it.
