Review from the 2021 Summer Camp SurveyName of camp: SLA Location: 9 Hanover Pl How old was your child when they attended camp this summer? 3 Review: 9-5 Mandarin camp. She didn’t know any Mandarin, so we were worried she would feel lost/confused, but she had a great time and the teachers were sooo sweet. At first we were worried the day was too long, but it was actually nice to have her whole day full of activities (plus it gave us a nice break). They did lots of complex arts and crafts, made food (dumplings, sushi, spring rolls), made their own slime and play doh and bubbles, etc. and had daily outings to the playground. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I wish they had a playground / park closer - it was a 10 min walk from school and my daughter said it was too hot / far to walk there every day.
Review from the 2019–2020 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K SurveyReview: My daughter looks forward going to school. The teachers are attentive and caring. And result, my daughter is thriving! I originally wanted my daughter to attend both the Mandarin and French classes, however due to Covid and we had to choose one. We ended up choosing Mandarin only. The school is great at enforcing masking wearing on all kids, including our 2 year old. The school requires us to fill out daily temperature checks and Covid questions. Amenities offered: Has outdoor space
Review from the 2019–2020 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K SurveyReview: I’d love the school if we weren’t remote. It is our choice to go remote only. But love the school and the program. Amenities offered: Has after-school options What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Administration and teachers often have a disconnect.
ISO: Feedback on SLA Mandarin PreschoolOur son K. (3) has been in the SLA program for 2 years and really enjoys it. He is in the half day program. I have been very impressed with their teachers, who are energetic, kind, and fluent speakers. To our surprise, in person programming has been fairly continuous this year. All the kids wear masks. However, if a child gets sick in a classroom, the entire classroom goes remote for 2 weeks. (February 2021)
Experience with Science, Language, Arts (SLA) International School? We have had children at SLA for 5 years now. Our daughter started in K and is now in Gr 4, and our son started in K and is now in Gr 1. Our youngest child will likely start PK there in the fall. All in the French track. Our experience at the school has been positive and we have been witness to the school's growth and are excited about plans for further enrichment. Our children each have different learning styles and intuitive language abilities, but each child's needs have been well-served at SLA, and each has benefited from the immersive language learning. The school offers smaller, intimate learning environments, and the language-learning is fully integrated into the curriculum, such that it is simply a natural part of the day and the learning experience. Our kids move easily, and constantly, between languages. (February 2020)
2019-2020 Year ReviewThe school offers French (up to 5th grade) and Mandarin (currently pre-K and K with plans to grow to 5th grade) immersion programs. The school puts a lot of focus on its math curriculum. There are also a lot of art projects. Overall, my family is happy with it. … About the facility: Has afterschool options
Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool SurveyFrench immersion, very warm and caring teachers DETAILS: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours What you would change: Nothing
Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool SurveyMy child LOVED SLA Annex. We are continuing on with the school This a French immersion program. My child only went 2/week and felt at home. The teachers are absolute magic. I have never experienced this much love and care for my child outside of our home. Even though my child spoke zero French, she felt so safe, comfortable and loved that it never bothered her. Not sure she knows more than a few phrases now but it doesn't matter because she LOVES going here. DETAILS: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options
Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool SurveyWe’re very pleased with the experience we’ve had in Pre-K at SLA. We loved the small classes and personal attention for our child, as well as the emphasis on both foundational interpersonal and academic skills. The teachers really love and appreciate our child as an individual and have closely watched the development over the course of the year. The focus on bilingualism and linguistic immersion at the school is also core to why we chose it, although not the only reason. Overall it’s a very loving and supportive environment for such young children, and we would make the same decision again knowing what we know now. DETAILS: Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours What you would change: The administrative aspects of the school are not always as smooth as we would like, though they seem to be improving since the school has settled into its new location after last summer’s move. It is a small issue in the broader context of a wonderful school for our child.
Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool SurveyThis is a fantastic, child-centered, play-based French immersion program. (There is also a Mandarin immersion program.) Children spend a lot of time outside in a nearby park/playground. The teachers are loving and skilled. Emphasis is on social and emotional learning and language development. My son is thriving and we could not be happier. DETAILS: Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours What you would change: It would be great to have outdoor space. The school is planning to renovate the roof for this option. I would also LOVE to have meal options.
Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool SurveyAs a parent and educator I am really pleased with our experience at SLA's Annex. The teachers are so warm and caring, and the curriculum is developmentally appropriate, fun, engaging and focuses on facilitating critical thinking and (inter)dependence. SLA's focus on Math, Science, and language while being a language immersion program stood out to our family. While we love the curricular programming, the love and warmth our son receives is the most important to us. I have recommended SLA to others and will continue to do so. DETAILS: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours
