looking for a therapist recommendation - postpartum and body image issues
I would recommend trying Sarah Lewin, who is a certified Body Trust provider and a therapist who specializes in both eating disorders and the perinatal population (she was a birth doula for many years, too).ISO Doula familiar with Mount Sinai West and Birthing Center
I delivered by first in 2015 at Mt. Sinai West with Sarah Lewin and she was wonderful!doula review
Sarah Lewin is an amazing doula! I was pregnant with my first child (who is now almost 5 months old) and had heard from a number of friends that I should consider hiring a doula. My husband and I interviewed a couple doulas, and Sarah was hands-down our favorite. She met with us twice (both times at our home) before I went into labor and answered as many questions as I could come up with about pregnancy, the birth process, and the post-partum period. I knew I wanted as few medical interventions in my child birth as possible (although Sarah supports all types of birth preferences), and she helped me understand various decisions points, and importantly, that most decisions don’t need to be made immediately, even when you are in labor…there is time to think about what you want to do. When I started feeling occasional contractions about a week before actual labor, I was in touch Sarah frequently, and she always responded quickly and with support and suggestions. I was sure I was in labor around 11:00 am three days before my official due date. I called Sarah, and she said whenever I was ready for her to come to my home, she would be there. My goal was to labor at home as long as possible, and she really helped me to feel safe and “normal” while I remained at home. She made suggestions for how to feel more comfortable, how to not focus too much on timing the contractions, but also always let me lead the way when it came to my needs. She was spoke in a calm and soothing tone, and like many doulas, offered gentle touch and massage to help with contractions and other pains. Once we were at the hospital, we encountered various unsettling moments, for example when my baby’s heart rate slowed and when we found out he was face up instead of face down. Sarah made a huge difference in letting me take it all in stride. I never felt overly anxious or unsure. When I was 9.5 centimeters, she heard a change in the sounds I was making, and alerted me to the fact that I might be ready to push. She was able to get the midwife while my husband stayed with me, and when the midwife checked again, she said it was indeed time for pushing. Throughout the pushing stage Sarah stayed right by my side, and I had my husband on the other side. She helped to hold my legs in position and helped me regulate my breathing, as I was consistently hyperventilating. When my son was born 45 minutes later, Sarah took pictures of him with me and my husband. They are the most amazing pictures, truly a treasure to have. And soon after the birth the nurses at the hospital commented on what a wonderful doula Sarah is! Sarah visited us at home with our baby very soon after the birth. We really struggled to breast feed, and Sarah offered so much help with this. She personally assisted us, and when it was clear we needed additional help, connected me to an amazing lactation consultant with whom I stayed in touch for months after. Truly, I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. I hope to have another baby in the next few years, and when I do, I will without a doubt hire Sarah again.Review for Sarah Lewin - doula
We could not have hoped for a better Doula than Sarah Lewin, who supported us with the birth of our first child in March 2015. Sarah was amazing from the early months of pregnancy through the postpartum period. I felt completely comfortable emailing her or calling her with any questions or concerns I had as my pregnancy progressed - from simple questions about vitamins to more difficult issues that came up - and she always offered thoughtful and sound advice and guidance. Even if she wasn't sure of something, she always took steps to consult with other Doulas and specialists in her network of colleagues to ensure she could provide me the most thorough and accurate information. I knew how thorough and careful she was so I always trusted her suggestions completely. Having her on our team really put me at ease since I knew I had a constant support person whom I could reach out to anytime. She even helped me with the difficult decision to switch our OB practice during the 3rd trimester and I was very glad I did. My labor unfolded very close to how I had hoped it would be and I think having Sarah with my husband and me gave me the peace of mind and confidence to really make that happen. Needless to say I highly recommend her!Submitting a review
We can’t imagine our birthing experience without Sarah. From our very first meeting she was warm, informative, patient, and professional. Throughout the pregnancy she was available to promptly answer all of our questions, both big and small. On the day we went into labor, things moved extremely quickly and Sarah sprung into action – guiding us through each step of the process with her reassurance and advocacy. Childbirth can be a scary thing to experience for the first time. No matter how many birthing classes you attend beforehand and how prepared you think you are, things can move quickly, unexpected circumstances can arise, and your birth plan can quickly go out the window. Sarah was an oasis of calm in a fast-moving situation. She explained everything that was happening to us as it happened, helped guide us through important decisions along the way, and made sure that I was safe, comfortable, and calm and that my husband knew what was going on. She struck the perfect balance between advocating for a natural birth and deferring to the judgment of our medical team when appropriate. In fact, she was so great at working with our ob-gyn and nurses that our ob-gyn, who is wary of doulas, asked if she could refer Sarah to her other patients. We were able to have the safe and natural birth with minimal intervention we hoped for in large part because of Sarah. We highly recommend her!
