  • Shout Out for Seamstress Ruthy Byers

I found Ruthy Byers on this list a while back. Based on the reviews, I decided to hold on to her number just in case I would need to use her in the future. I eventually had an item that needed redesign/alterations in order for me to wear it. What I thought would have been a major issue was clearly not a problem for her. She was able to cleverly figure out a solution, and the work was done in less than an hour. In addition to being a genuinely nice person, her work is flawless. Ruthy came to my rescue a second time when the all important graduation dress needed work as well. Again, the pins, came out and one, two, three, the work was done She is a miracle worker.
  • 2018 Review

I received Ruthy's name from this listserv and she did not disappoint! She just finished tailoring a dress (a fancy dress for me to wear to an evening wedding) and her work is superb. This was no easy feat considering it was a regularly-sized dress that she had to morph into a petite size to fit me. The entire top of the dress was modified and modified really well. Ruthy also conveniently came to my house for both the fitting and to drop off the finished garment. I recommend her tailoring skills without hesitation. No affiliation except as a satisfied customer.
  • Re: Need a tailor

Contact Ruthy Byers. I've seen her recommended on PSP a number of times over the years and finally reached out after the tailor at my local dry cleaner told me my request was too much work. I'm so glad I did. She is fantastic and didn't flinch when I showed her my request. She has been a fashion designer and said sewing is a passion of hers since she was a child. It showed. She is a lovely person, has great style/ style instincts and stopped by my place on her way home from work one evening. I will now be using her services exclusively. She lives in South Slope. Ruthy for the win.
  • I'm Looking for a Good Tailor / Seamstress in North Slope area

I just used Ruthy Byers, whose name I got from PSP, for a not so simple fix in a rush and she was great. AND she picked up and dropped off at my house because it was on her way to work!
  • Re: Is there really not a talented tailor in the slope or close?

I used Ruthy Byers, who came recommended on the list. She came to my place in Park Slope and did alterations and repairs on two dresses that were more significant than just hemming, etc. She did a great job and did it quickly.
  • Re: Seamstress

Ruthy Byers is FANTASTIC. She recently altered 2 dresses for me to perfection. Ruthy is truly a gem.
  • Ruthy Byers

Ruthy has altered many things for me over the years. Her work is always beautifully done, reasonably priced and she’ll often deliver it too – that is Ruthy’s exceptional service. But, the last alteration was truly a miracle. I bought a dress for a black tie event. Ruthy adjusted it to perfection for the next evening, in LESS than 24 hours! I felt so blessed to have such a talented person to help me. She guided me with what she knew would work for the dress and she was totally right. Ruthy really knows her stuff, makes intelligent solutions and has gone above and beyond for me again and again.

I'd like to highly recommend Ruthy (a fellow Park Slope Parent) for any alterations you need, small or large. I found her based on recommendations on this list, and I was just as pleased with her work as everyone else appears to have been. I have a multilayered "eggplant" (= purple!) bridesmaid dress to wear this month that needed to be hemmed as well as taken in at other locations, and Ruthy not only did a great job, but made suggestions on subtle changes to add style. The dress now fits beautifully and I'm about as happy to wear it as I'm going to get! Ruthy was a pleasure to work with and although I opted to go to her apartment for the alterations, she offered to pickup and drop off at my home. I also believe her prices are very reasonable. (November 2011)

I highly recommend Ruthy Byers!! She knows how clothes are supposed to fit and is capable of making subtle yet enhancing changes to anything she's ever sewn for me - which have included very complicated skirts & pants. Additionally she "fixed" an evening gown consisting of layered ruffles for a friend, not taking short cuts, but individually addressing each & every ruffle! She has a great feel for how things should fit and really understands how clothes are put together. I highly recommend Ruthy. (Aug 2011)

You should call Ruthy Byers - a Park Slope Parent herself and an amazing tailor with a terrific eye and a steady hand. She did wonderful work on a very floaty, multiered evening gown for me last fall, and has done great work for my friends as well [...] Ruthy has a lot of fans on this listserve! (September 2011)

I highly recommend my friend Ruthy Byers for complex alterations. She really knows clothes! She has tailored (altered?) a very complex skirt for me as well as a pair of trousers and an evening gown for a another friend that consisted of many layers. Ruthy takes the time to do it right - no band-aid approach for her! You can expect a quality job. Give Ruthy a ring - her prices are reasonable - and she might even be able to pick up/drop off. I just wanted to thank everyone who recommended Ruthy for tailoring work on this forum. She is truly terrific - I would never know that the pieces I gave her had been altered, and they fit beautifully. She's also incredibly nice, and even picked up and delivered the items. What a neighborhood gem! If you've got lovely pieces that need some alterations, I would highly, highly recommend Ruthy for the work.

I have a friend who sews all sorts of things for people (curtains, clothes, wall-hangings). For me, she totally rehabed a coat I loved (that I thought I needed to donate) as well as some tricky tailoring on a skirt. She really understands the way clothes are made and knows the correct way of fixing something. I believe she'll even come to your house! (Feb 2011)

I always see so many queries for seamstress recommendations here on this list...so I wanted to mention a lovely woman by the name Ruthy Byers. She has years of sewing and design experience and was a pleasure to work with. I got her name from a friend when I was looking to have some custom children's rocking chair cushions made...she did such a fabulous job, her fee was totally reasonable and she turned the project around so incredibly quickly just before the holidays. Ruthy and I aren't affiliated in any other way other than by her work...please give her a try if you need some work done...you won't be disappointed. (Jan 2011)

I recently used local mom Ruthy Byers to make curtains, fix ripped pillows, and alter cloths. She did a great, fast, skilled job! I thought she was quite reasonably priced as well, so I do highly recommend her. (September, 2010)
