Philosophy
Roots and Wings fosters a warm and thoughtful atmosphere in what may be children’s first familiar environment outside of home. In an intimate setting with a generous ratio of adults to children, teachers nurture individual enthusiasms and needs. Teachers help children play by themselves and with others, and support those who are ready in participating in whole-group activities. As children’s awareness of their peers grows, so too may a dawning sense of the challenges and rewards of getting along together.
Roots and Wings promotes caring, non-coercive learning to help children along their way through toddlerhood, emphasizing:
Learning Skills: Children are encouraged to
become more aware of their own emotions and how to express them.
Communication: Children are encouraged to communicate verbally and nonverbally, growing in
their ability to make themselves understood and to understand others.
Motor Skills: Children get to practice gross and fine
motor skills, embrace physical challenges, and move toward managing risks.
Failure and Success: Children are helped to negotiate setbacks confidently.
Teachers’ mindfulness and dedication assist children in moving forward in these areas, enabling all Roots and Wings kids to gain in self-confidence and take pleasure in who they are and what they can do.

Loved this small daycare, which provides care mostly for 1-3 year olds, but occasionally younger babies as well. Teachers are very loving and pay close attention to children's needs. Offer up a diverse schedule of engagement including singing and music, Spanish, sign language, art, sciences (ie: planting seeds, watching caterpillars grow into butterflies) and lots of free play as well.; Amenities: Has outdoor space;Day Care Recommendations - Central or North Slope
We loved Roots & Wings! The directors Sandy & Aise are wonderful! They were so sweet and patient during our son transitioning from home with me to daycare. Highly recommend them!Roots & Wings
My son loves Roots & Wings and is very loved there. The teachers are experienced and conversational and have created a very stable, playful space. The educational approach is progressive and play-based. They also have very successful napping and meal routines. There is a shaded outdoor space with grass and a deck and a picnic table, where the kids chalk and blow bubbles and play with water. R&W has a cozy community, with more than a third of the current children having older siblings who attended earlier. The teachers engage both older and younger children very skillfully. My son has been so happy and absorbed in play there that I've had to switch off the lights to get him out the door at night. He sings and dreams about his teachers and classmates when he is away. He's made friends, learned a lot, and obviously enjoyed his days there. The teachers are very communicative and build long-term relationships with the children as individuals. I am also very grateful that one teacher with native fluency is taking the time to speak, read, and sing with my son in Spanish after I asked, and now my son knows a lot of Spanish as well as English.Review from the 2020–2021 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K Survey
Review: We are so happy we found roots and wings. It's a small daycare for 12 children of young ages (it says 1 year and up on the website, but they can accept younger), and it is a warm, loving place that is also clean, inviting and authentic. The owners and assistants love the children, and our daughter has been thriving. Facility amenities: Has outdoor space, Has early morning hours What would you change about the program? Nothing Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? They were careful, and when there was any need to close they took extra precautions. They requested testing from families when needed and also being a small daycare exposure was limited.Review from the 2019–2020 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K Survey
Review: Roots and wings is a hidden gem. They are a small daycare taking infants until about 2.5-3 years old. They are so caring and loving of the children and really treat them as their own, the place is welcoming and clean, and they invest a lot in their daily activities and communications. Our daughter has thrived there and is very happy every day. Being small, they also feel safer in all that has to do with pandemics. Amenities offered: Has outdoor space, Has early morning hours What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Nothing!Shoutout to daycare in North Slope
Our daughters small, warm and loving daycare, Roots and Wings, serving infants to 2.5 year-olds, has some spots available (some parents deciding to stay out of town..). This is a hidden gem on 6th avenue and St. Johns in North Slope - http://rootsandwingsdaycare.org/2019-2020 Year Review
A warm, nurturing environment for children in a space that is just as cozy as home. … About the facility: Has outdoor space2019-2020 Year Review
Roots and Wings is a really special place, we feel really lucky and grateful that our child gets to spend time there. They take babies through 3 year olds and it feels like one big family, parents and children alike. They keep the group size relatively small which allows for greater one on one care. I can't say enough good things about the two main caregivers, Sandy and Aise. They are so caring and attentive to our sons emotional needs as well as ours, taking extra care when he's going through tough emotional transitions. While they provide children with a full day of activities, there aren't too many bells and whistles in the space which we like. They have a big play room, a large kitchen for meals and crafts, and a backyard for squirrel spotting and chalk drawing. And as long as they weather isn't too bad, they will always take the children outside to play. They're love and care have really helped our child flourish. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool optionsReview from the 2018/2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey

Age: 1-2 years Review: Very experienced, warm, caring and great energy. You can tell kids really like it there. We LOVE R&W so much, we are sending our younger one there. Recommend? Highly recommendDaycare review- Roots and Wings
Sandy and Aise are baby whisperers. We can't say enough great things about R&W. Our older one went to R&W for two years, and our younger one, 20 months, is currently there. They both went 5 days a week full days and have flourished in the warm, loving, and nurturing environment. R&W also does a great job of fostering a community, and we have made a number of friends through there, something we did not find at other day care providers. While our younger child will be moving on after this summer we hope we can keep R&W in our lives and would highly recommend them.Review submitted via the 2014-2015 daycare/preschool survey
Length of time: Full days 3 days a week Child’s Age: 1-2 years Type of facility: Private, small daycare/playschool experience run out of a person's home with a very small number of childrenThere is little/no parental involvement with the administration or running of the facility. REVIEW: We love Roots and Wings!! It is a great program run by two very dedicated women out of a garden apartment. They have space for 8 kids ages 1-3. They have a wonderful set up with a play area up front, a nap room and a kitchen with a group table where the kids eat together and do art projects. The women who run the facility are very nurturing and our daughter smiles every morning when she arives at day care. They take the kids outside every day (weather permitting) to either the local park or the back yard. We really appreciate the level of engagement they have with the children, the mixed age group, and the warm, family like atmosphere. Would you recommend? Length of Time: We initially did part time and progressed to full-time Child's Age: 1-2 years2-3 years3-4 years Review: After touring several daycares and now having switched to a new one (unexpectedly, all of our child's peers left this year--several families moved out of NYC due to work, etc.), we now see even more clearly that Aise and Sandy, Roots & Wings directors and main teachers, are incredibly doting and loving caregivers to all of the kids. They are so invested in each child's development and overall well being that they are in touch with us via email and text on nights and weekends when our child wasn't feeling well or when they knew we were going through a rough patch (teething spells, lots of travel due to work, etc.) They are such warm and caring teachers that a lot of new kids, including ours, don't have any issues transitioning to their program. We also like that they take the kids out to the playground everyday, weather permitting. Everyday, they write out an anecdote about each child's day, along with notes about potty and nap times. They also always available to chat at length about our child's day during pick-up, which was great. Recommend (Hi/Rec/DoNot): Highly recommend Would you send your child again? We absolutely LOVE Roots & Wings. Our son has been going there since he was 10 months old and is now almost 3. He went to another day care prior to R&W and we only switched because of a scheduling need, but when we did, it was like our eyes were opened up to what day care could be and everything we were missing out on. The day care is run by two women who are truly gifted at connecting to children and have created such a warm and loving atmosphere that we feel lucky to have our son there. In addition, it's an environment where we have come to make friends with other parents and it feels like there is a real community around the place. This will be our son's last year due to his age, but we are all sad for him to leave. We will definitely be sending our daughter there when she is old enough.(no subject)
Review Date 2012 Length of TIme: Full day Child's Age: 2-3 years Review: We love Roots and Wings! Everyone is so caring and loving and seems truly concerned with the happiness of my son. The children always have lots of activities; arts & crafts, singing, storytime, playtime, even yoga! Weather permitting, they go out for walks and outings to the playground. I love that R&W feels like a home, with separate rooms for eating, napping and playing. My son has thrived at Roots and Wings and I feel so fortunate to have had him attend such a wonderful daycare. I could go on and on... Do you recommend? (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend(no subject)
Review Date 2012 Length of TIme: 4 full days/week Child's Age: 2-3 years Review: Run by two wonderful women this daycare is a loving place for our son, he has attended for two years and we are sad to go. They accept children at 1 year, and most kids move on to pre-school around 3. They are flexible with number of days/week, days are from 8-6. They run on a "school year" from September through end of July. This is a gem of a daycare!! Do you recommend? (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend(no subject)
Review Date 2012 Length of TIme: 2 day Child's Age: 2-3 years Review: Our daughter attended Roots & Wings for 2 days a week from age 1.5 to 3 and we loved it. Aise and Sandy, the two main caregivers are amazingly attentive, energetic, caring and creative with juggling the demands of little people. We also found them to be great at communicating with us in terms of how our daughter was doing and responsive to any extra needs we had. We also really liked how they went outside to play a lot, at the nearby playground as well as on mini little walks. I always felt that my daughter was in good hands and even on days when morning separation was hard she always had a good/happy day there. I'd highly recommend them to any parent! Do you recommend?
