  • Best spicy chai in park slope?

Roots on 18th and 5th has a good chai. I think they make it themselves instead of from a mix or concentrate.
  • ISO Greenwood/South Slope stores for holiday gifts

For the coffee lover: - Roots Cafe - amazing coffees, art for sale, and a community stalwart (5th Ave at 18th)
  • Roots Cafe & Food Pantry/Soup Kitchen

Not sure if this has been shared here already, but I had to give a shout - please tell friends and neighbors! Roots Cafe in South Slope (5th ave & 18th st) is still operating as a to-go cafe but they've become a food pantry also. They are accepting food and supply donations (including fresh produce) and it's set up like a little market so folks can come in and take whatever they need. They are also providing free sandwiches and soups to those in need. They sell Forty Weight coffee beans and baked goods from Colson, so you can stock up on those things while dropping off donations. Their sandwiches are fantastic and they are doing curbside pickup if you don't want to go inside. They are accepting any amounts of things, so if you have "extras" of groceries you've ordered in bulk, etc., here's an easy way to donate them. They are also accepting GoFundMe and Amazon donations through their site: https://www.rootsbrooklyn.com/ Please spread the word to neighbors who'd want to give, or to those who may need food/supplies.
  • ISO: Great decaf coffee in the south slope area

Roots Cafe - can't recommend them highly enough.

Try Roots Cafe in South Slope (5th Ave/18th street). Not only is it a wonderful cafe/local family business (and they stock Forty Weight coffee, made in NY state) they’re also operating a food pantry for single moms out of work due to the pandemic. Every visit there restores my faith in humanity (and fulfills my need for good coffee). https://instagram.com/rootsbrooklyn?igshid=pfp9y5yx8bcl
  • Places to donate food? (Canisters of oatmeal)

Roots Cafe (5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th streets) has become a food bank for the neighborhood and I'm sure they'd really appreciate it.
  • Shout out to Roots Cafe, helping needy neighbors

I second the commendation for roots. Btw, their coffee is amazing. They have a variety of roasts and will grind beans for you for home consumption.

Hi everyone-I just wanted to highlight a neighborhood business that is doing amazing things to help the community during the pandemic. In a true organic, grassroots effort, Roots Cafe in Greenwood Heights has essentially turned itself into a food pantry. They are delivering food and making it available daily in the cafe for pickup for needy families, mostly immigrant single moms. They have a GoFundMe that has raised over $20,000, and they also have an Amazon wish list on their website through which you can purchase food and household items for the pantry. Roots is a neighborhood fixture (with great coffee and the best grits, among other things) and a true family-owned small business. The current owners, who are a young family with small children, took over sometime last year, and I cannot imagine that this is what they expected from the business, but they have pivoted with such grace and humility, it is really inspiring. (Sadly, like many local businesses, I believe they were denied a small business emergency loan...)
