Prospect Park Carousel

Description

A 585-acre oasis of scenic beauty, Brooklyn's flagship park is the perfect location for parties and other special occasions. Enjoy your child’s next birthday at this treasured neighborhood destination. The Prospect Park Alliance offers birthday party packages at two popular attractions, the 1912 Carousel and Lefferts Historic House.
The 1912 Carousel is one of the Park’s most popular attractions. Its 53 magnificent horses ride alongside a lion, a giraffe, a deer and two dragon-pulled chariots. Parties at the Carousel offer plenty of amusement for children of all ages.

Lefferts Historic House was built by a Dutch family in the 18th-century farming village of Flatbush, and has been voted one of the best birthday party venues by Time Out New York. Children enjoy potato sack races, treasure hunts and other fun activities led by our dedicated staff of educators.

Location and Address: The Carousel and Lefferts Historic House are located in the Children’s Corner of Prospect Park near the Willink entrance, at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard

The Prospect Park Carousel is a great location for a kid's party. The only downsides are that they are fairly strict about the 2-hour limit (sometimes because there is another party right after you) and it's a bit DIY -- you need to bring all the food, plates, cups/utensils, etc. You can't do much with decoration (although you don't really need to). They provide two big tables and then two small tables with about 8-10 kid chairs, as well as trash bags for clean-up.

It was great. They put out tables, they cleaned up. The price was amazing, $250 for two hours and 25 wristbands. My daughter could invite all of her friends, they had entertainment (the ride) and then plenty of room to run around the grassy areas too. The only drawback is that trying to get everything there to set up immediately before the party, since we had to bring all food and decorations. It would be nice if there was a way to maybe drop off stuff early, perhaps behind the snack counter or some such? So it's not such a mad scramble.

Age of child: 4 Venue Review: The staff was incredibly helpful, especially when there was an unexpected increase in the public ridership. We didn't have a private event scheduled but they helped block off the area a bit more than usual due to the circumstances. Everyone enjoyed the carousel rides & they had enough time to ride several times. You do have to worry about the weather b/c the party space is all out doors. Some people have used the farm house nearby as a backup space. The carousel party area does have a retractable awning but it would probably only be useful if there was a sudden downpour, not if you were trying to have your event on a rainy day. They offer 2 tables and some chairs but we found there were enough benches that we didn't need chairs. The open lawn area also gives kids a chance to run around when they don't want to ride the carousel. For older kids it would also be a great space to play games. This carousel is less expensive than Jane's carousel, though Jane's carousel has the benefit of being inside and climate controlled. I would have another event at the Prospect Park Carousel.

We had a birthday party there once and it was absolutely fine. Technically if you have more than 25 people you're supposed to get a permit from the City Parks Dept, but we had 30-40 for our daughter's 5th birthday party, and it was fine. If you are a Prospect Park Alliance member (click HERE for details: http://www.prospectpark.org/support/join), you get free unlimited carousel rides. It's $100/year for a family and we definitely get our money's worth! Just a thought... Have a great party! June 2012

LIKES: The staff was easy. They let us stay beyond our allotted time. We got lots of free rides on the carousel. What you'd change: Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Highly Recommend

Address: Prospect Park LIKES: Lucio at the Carousel is fantastic. Wide open space behind the carousel to play games. My husband and brother-in-law also dressed as Spiderman and Batman - that was a HUGE hit! What you'd change: Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Highly Recommend

Address: Prospect Park LIKES: The Carousel is one of my daughter's favourite activities and she can have as many rides as she likes. The staff are fabulous, and it is very low key. When inviting that many people, it is difficult to find a venue that is affordable. The main work was making a cake for that many people. What you'd change: I wouldn't change a thing, except perhaps to not hold it on the same day as the five boro bike race. Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Highly Recommend

Reason for Choice: of special interest to my child. Likes: The 4th birthday carousel party was a big hit -- I can't think of anything not to like. The one problem was the stress of wondering if it was going to rain leading up to the day of the party. Changes: Not a thing. Not included in the Party Package: , invitations, food for kids, party bags, cake,When you rent the carousel for a party, basically you get full use of the carousel for your guests for about 2 hours, plus a couple of tables. Everything else you provide yourself. We had a late morning party on the weekend (10am - 12pm) and brought bag. Cost Per Child: $11-$15 DO you recommend? (Choices: Highly/Recommend/DoNot) Highly recommend Other Info: While not cheap in itself, the wonderful thing about the carousel is that if you want to invite a lot of guests it actually turns out to be substantially cheaper per person then most birthday party options out there.

We have our sons' birthdays outside every year (June & Sept.). In Prospect Park we shared renting the Carousel and it worked out great. Even though the weather was iffy there is a side canopy you set food out on. Usually we have them in a playground closer to us in the morning when its quiet. The upsides are you can invite everyone, neighbors, friends, teachers, etc.. I never feel bad that I have to exclude someone. On the other hand I had over 60 people at our party in June! Thats a lot of juice boxes and food. I cook most of the food myself but it still ended up topping around 300- not including favors. Plus outside there is no real need to pay for extra entertainment, instead we set up a bubble machine, buy giant beach balls, and two years ago I filled 200 water balloons! Inexpensive but time consuming! The downsides are that you are always under the threat of dubious weather. We always make the next day the rain date and if it truly rained we'd be out of luck. But my kids love it and the relaxed feeling you get from not sweating about every sibling that accidentally shows up or every guest that arrives in the last 5 minutes is priceless!
