You're at the mercy of the weather, which changed 20deg in the two weeks from when we planned it. You're at the mercy of the bathrooms being open.Review from the 2022 Party Survey
We held our child's 2nd birthday party in Prospect Park near the 15th Street entrance under an area with a bunch of pine trees. The pros: obviously it's great to have a big outdoor space for the kids to play, to feel COVID-safe (especially for those of us still traumatized by given birth in the early days of the pandemic), and to create the atmosphere that you want. The cons: even though we have a car and one of those pop-out wagons, it was still a schlep to cart all the party supplies (food, tables, kids' activities, balloons) from our apartment to the park. Of course you also have to worry about the weather and staking out a space, although we didn't have any issues with setting up in the area that we'd hoped to use even in the middle of July.Review from the 2022 Party Survey
Park parties are great! Only probably is hauling everything in and lack of bathroomsReview from the 2022 Party Survey
On the lawn past Lincoln Playground - it is a nice area, easy to find - there used to be several picnic tables there but now only one broken down one, which is unfortunate but we made do even with that. There are also a few BBQ grills there. There's also a nice tree for hanging a pinataReview from the 2022 Party Survey
We hosted my son's second birthday party at 3:30pm on Saturday at the picnic tables behind the Picnic House in Prospect Park. My parents (bday boy's grandparents) arrived about 45 mins earlier to make sure we claimed a table. Even though we live in the slope, my husband, son and I drove to park to transport the supplies. It was very easy to find parking in the parking lot by the Litchfield Manor. From there, we walked over to the Picnic House and used a collapsible wagon to transport the party supplies - the wagon was indispensable! We got party favors from Amazon and Possibilities on the Slope as well as balloons from there too. We considered having someone come play music but it was too pricey so we just had some stomp rockets, which the little kids loved! I also planned to do a mini pumpkin hunt and play games with a parachute I purchased. Those activities didn't really come to pass as planned but the kids like the pumpkins and hiding in the parachute. Probably planned more than we needed too!Review from Kids Birthday and Bar/Bat Mitzvah Party Survey - 2016
Venue Location: Prospect Park (longmeadow near Garfield St.) Age of child: 6 Venue Review: My son has a mid-September birthday and loves playing sports and games outside, so we went with a park party after attending some great ones for his friends. Pros - No venue cost (except for the $25 permit application fee I paid to the park, even though the permit approval did not come through on time despite me submitting it 30 days in advance. It didn't matter - nobody asked for a permit on the day.) No venue cost also meant I could splurge on the cake, which was a huge hit! Also, the kids loved having all the space to run around and play soccer, blow giant bubbles, do stomp rocket etc. We had gorgeous weather. Cons - Had to lug all of our stuff (folding tables, sports equipment, the cake) up to the park from our residence, two and half avenues away. We used a large wagon and a rolling cart. We had family in town to help, and that was essential, even if just for watching our kids while my husband and I set up the party. I worried about the weather, and I worried about being able to find a large enough space in the general area I'd stated on the invitation. Both turned out fine. Even though park was crowded, we staked out a spot about 45 minutes before party time and were able to claim enough space for tables, games, a few picnic blankets.Review from Kids Birthday and Bar/Bat Mitzvah Party Survey - 2016

Venue Location: Playground and tables Age of child: 4 Venue Review: It's a great venue for a low-key birthday party. If you want to claim all of the tables (or at least the ones in the shade) you need to arrive early. This year we had to share space with another (non-birthday) event. Some of those guests were taking our food/drink even though we were very obviously a kid's birthday party.Review from Birthday Party Survey, 2012

Address: 9th street entrance LIKES: Kids ran around, no issues with noise or age ranges What you'd change: I would have contacted the parks department much earlier to get all the paperwork done. I would've remembered a trash bag, and had a car available to cart things back and forth. Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Address: near picnic house LIKES: We were the only ones having a party that day. It was great weather. Lots of room to run around. What you'd change: It's hard to decorate outside and balloons were not allowed on our permit. Had to lug a lot of stuff there to be comfortable. Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Highly RecommendReview from Birthday Party Survey, 2012
LIKES: Since he was turning 1, he really didn't have an opinion on it :) What you'd change: Turned out to be a pretty chilly day, even in mid-May, so the whole outdoor-in-the-park vibe was a lot less pleasant than it could have been. Address: Harmony playground LIKES: We set up right putside the playground so the kids can play after/during the party in the water and on the climbing structures. Do you recommend (High Rec, Rec, Rec w/ Reservations, Do Not Rec)? Highly Recommend(no subject)
