took classes here http://prepareinc.com/ a long time ago - 20+ years, actually, in a much scarier time in the city - and I can't recommend it enough. It's a time commitment (and they only have that one Chelsea location in NYC that I know of) but it will change your thinking and give you a lot more confidence walking around. I took it with a couple of friends, both petite and one at the time nearly 60, and they also loved it (the younger one took karate for a couple of years afterward because she enjoyed the physical challenge; I never had that urge but I really benefited from the knowledge and the self-confidence it gave me.
