ISO an after school theater program for middle school kid
Piper! My kid’s done summer and after school.Piper Theater camp for rising 3rd grader
We did it last summer with our then rising third grader and it was THE BEST. She really loved it and seemed to actually engage thoughtfully with Shakespearean language as well as made friends, had fun, and put on a show at the end. We are hoping to return this summer, once we figure out some family travel....Fall theater program
My 11 year old daughter just did Piper Theater Camp--and we were all pretty amazed at how incredible it was all around (staff, organization, communication, heart, community). I know they have an afterschool option, as well. I would HIGHLY recommend it.Fall theater program
We love the programs and staff at Piper, located at MS 51.2019 Summer Camp Review
Age: 11 Review: Pretty much everything about Piper is awesome. Our daughter was in the two week session that performed 12 Angry Girls. We/she loved that it was an original full length play written by Meredith Hackett, who was also the Director/Counselor. The play was amazing - hilarious, topical - and including enough meaty dialogue for all 17 characters. Our daughter did not have one of the bigger roles, but she was thrilled by the ensemble aspect that Meredith created. Its her second year at Piper (she was in the one week Starling program last year) and she will definitely be returning for a four week experience next year. She is dedicated to theatre, Piper was a natural choice for us, but she invited her best friend who had zero experience or previous interest in acting and this girl loved it as well. They really work on team work and mutual support, so its a great experience for any kid, not just those with big interest in theatre. What would you change? Nothing that we would change, just a caution to parents that the kids are not supervised during lunch hour and are allowed to go out along 5th avenue between 9th - 1st street. If you are not OK with that you'll need to let them know in advance.tween/teen theater day camp recs?

Summer 2018 Review: Our aspiring thespian was enthralled with the experience. She came home excited every day of the weeklong program. Age of child: 10Highly Recommend
Chiming in, our two daughters, 11 and 14, have been going for the last 4 years. It's a great program, they learn a lot, work hard and it's also very social. Highly recommend.Piper Review 2016-2017
Our 10-year-old daughter has done the Piper Theater summer camp for at least two years in a row, maybe three, and really loves it. It’s the only summer day camp she’s asked to go back to each year as she gets older, so that’s saying something. We love Jodi, her teacher, and the shows are fun. No complaints at all.Piper Review
My daughter did Piper every summer for years, up to a couple years ago (she'll graduate high school this coming June). She was very into theatre and acting and loved it. Their directors all seem very good. I would say if your kid really enjoys theatre, they will have a good time.Summer Camp Survey 2016
Age of child: 13 Review: Loved it. Engaging and supportive staff and campers alikeReview for Piper Theater Summer Camp
My kids have been attending Piper Theater's summer camp for four years, and it's always a high point of our summer. The Starlings program is exceptional - the staff are warm, nurturing, fun, and rigorous, so that the kids have a really enjoyable summer experience which also results in a really impressive culminating performance. My daughter did Twelfth Night last summer and I was totally wowed by the proficiency those seven and eight years olds seemed to have with Shakespearean language - this summer, she's doing King Lear. They seemed to really understand the story and script and they owned it, which was so empowering. My daughter had a pretty big bout of stage fright last summer, and the staff was so incredibly supportive of her, working with her so that she felt comfortable but also pushing her so that she could fully participate. Last summer my son, who is in middle school, graduated to Piper's Performance Theater Workshop and the level of rigor increased to match the students' increased maturity. When I saw his performance - a world premiere of an original script from Romania -- I was floored. I was a undergrad theater major and the production rivaled plays I watched and performed in at college - a truly collaborative ensemble piece of really thoughtful theater. More than anything though, the kids have fun, and are supported creatively. My kids look forward to participating in Piper every summer, and I am sure that in a few years when my son's too old to perform, he'll be a Piper counselor.Review from 2015 Summer Camp Survey
Age of Child: 10 Likes: Excellent directors; varied activities; non-competitive What would you change? Nothing Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Highly recommendReview from 2013 Summer Camp Experience
Program: Godspell Age of Child: 12 Likes: She got to do the thing she loves the most- perform in a full-scale musical. She also loved the feeling of independence while walking to and from camp alone as well as meeting new friends and going to lunch with them every day on 5th Avenue. What would you change? I can't think of a thing. It was an awesome experience. Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Highly recommend Do you have any other information to add? My daughter really grew by leaps and bounds this summer. The kids and counselors/teachers at the camp really made it feel like one big family and it allowed her to gain confidence and learn new things while having a blast.(no subject)
Camp Piper theatre camp Old stone house--4th st and 5th ave Day Care or Sleep Away-- Day camp Program: Starlings Age of Child: 10 Likes: My daughter liked the fact that she got to be involved in the development of the play in addition to the sets, costumes and characters. This was her second year going and she plans to attend the longer session next year. What would you change? Sometimes the space was too crowded for the number of campers she thought. Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Highly recommend Do you have any other information to add? Review from 2012 Summer Camp Experience(no subject)
I just wanted to offer an endorsement for this wonderful kids' theater program. Our son spent several years with the Piper program and always had an amazing experience. As he got older, he much preferred Piper to leaving Brooklyn for sleepaway camp. The program is very challenging and fun, while allowing the kids to enjoy a summer relaxing in the 'hood. If your child is interested in theatre, this is a truly amazing experience for them to try.
