Piano lessons for 5 1/2 year old?
Hi, both of my kids started piano at around 5 years old at Park Slope Music School. We like the small music school for its relaxed and nurturing vibe, enthusiastic, patient and fun teachers who keep the kids motivated and make the lessons enjoyable. The school is just north of 9th St on 5th Ave. S, who runs the school is a local parent. The kids have been taking remote lessons this past year, but I think on-site classes will be offered in the fall as well as remote (double check with them to confirm). The rates are very reasonable, and schedule is accommodating. I think for younger kids the first lessons are around 15 minutes long to start. he first time I met Anthony and Susan was when my daughter, Meredith, 3 years old at the time, had just been evaluated ashaving mild to moderate autism and I was looking for alternative ways in which she would be able to express herself. When I told Susan and Anthony about Meredith and her situation, they opened their arms and accepted who she was without asking any questions. It was tough at the beginning to teach my daughter because she wasn’t talking and did not follow any directions. But Susan was very patient with her and very knowledgeable of what type of instruction was needed. Within a few weeks, my daughter thrived—she played songs with two hands, read notes by herself, recognized the sounds being played, and most importantly, she started to talk. I was very touched and thrilled to discover that my daughter was able to communicate and interact with people other than her parents. This November will be the one year anniversary of my daughter’s first lesson with Susan. Within the year, Meredith had noticeably improved and had demonstrated the ability to play more and more difficult pieces. She even had her very first piano recital and completed asong all by herself. She said to me after the recital that she wasn’t scared, not even a bit! Of course, there are ups and downs during the lessons, but Susan and Anthony are always there for us and give us the best advice after each lesson, as well as share their personal experiences with other kids in need. I am very grateful that I have met them and very delighted that my daughter has found her music home.Music school Treblemakers
Last night as I sat at PSlope institution Dizzy's attending open mic night for Treblemakers, kvelling while my daughter sang Katy Perry's "Rise" to a packed restaurant, I realized a review on PSP for this fantastic music school was long overdue. I'm not particularly musical, so not discerning about teaching methodology. I just know that when my daughter took piano with a teacher who used a more traditional approach, she wasn't engaged and quit. My husband and I didn't want that experience to end her music training, so we sought a music school where the learning was more child-directed. We found Treblemakers, and our daughter is engaged and thriving with piano and voice lessons. My husband is a professional musician and composer, with a fairly high standard and high expectations for the musical training of our daughter. Treblemakers has exceeded those expectations. Susan not only teaches singing; she teaches *music*. Her lessons focus on the fundamentals of musicianship while maintaining our daughter's interest with fun exercises and great song choices. All the while, Anthony runs the office with aplomb, always communicating with the parents and keeping on top of the scheduling. We're extremely pleased to have found this wonderful school and highly recommend it.Review of Treblemakers
I'd like to give a shout-out to Treblemakers, an amazing music school in the neighborhood. Suzan and Anthony, the owners of the school and Park Slope parents themselves, are the sweetest people and know all the kids in the school really well. Our 9 yo daughter has now been taking piano lessons for three years and has been in their summer camps for 2 summers, and our 7 yo twins have been taking piano lessons there for a year. All three love their teacher Alexandra, and Treblemakers has become like a second home for them. Although I originally found Treblemakers through PSP, I discovered after we joined them that several of the families we know (including two families where parents are musicians) send their kids there. I now understand why. While their approach is very serious (Suzan has spent many years developing her music education system and books, which all the teachers in the school use with beginner students), they put a lot of thought and effort into figuring out what moves each individual kid and work hard to keep it fun and to keep the kids engaged, whether it is choosing the kind of music a kid wants to play, or incorporating another instrument or composition into the lessons, or suggesting ways of practicing that allows each kid to actually enjoy the practice. I feel so lucky to have found this gem of a school and can't even picture our life for the last three years without them.ISO Piano Teacher (and piano!)
I recommend Treble Makes on 5th Ave at 9th Street. My twins have been studying guitar and piano for over 3 years now. I believe they also offer drum and voice lessons Very nice folks over there, and they are super accommodating with ‘twin-scheduling” Keyboard - I would recommend locating a used keyboard - with weighted keys They are always out there - especially as the school year closes!Review from 2013 Summer Camp Experience
Program: Music Camp Age of Child: 7 Likes: The kids who are registered for the music camp form a band and she really enjoyed learning songs, different instruments and playing them with other children. They did music all morning and in the afternoon, weather permitting, they would go to a local park and she had so much fun and formed some nice friendships. I really LOVE the ease at which they teach music to kids. On the last day of camp "the band" performed the songs they had been practicing for two weeks and I was blown away watching kids move from guitar to piano to drums to bass as they rotated the instruments for each song. I was so proud of all the kids it brought tears to my eyes. What would you change? I think they have a good formula as my daughter loved it. Would you send your child(ren) again? We are really happy with the school Treblemakers on 5th ave betw 9th & 8th St. They have amazing teachers and the couple that run the school Suzan & Anthony are really down to earth lovely human beings. My daughter has been taking piano there for several months. I've been to 1 recital and 1 performance for the completion of summer camp (BTW, their summer camp is awesome) and I cried both times because the kids were so amazing. My daughter is really flourishing there. I'm not normally a gusher, but I do believe they have a magical way of working with kids.Review of local business Treblemakers

My daughter has been with Treblemakers for the past 2 years for piano classes. She started when she was 4. Suzan, the owner, made a piano book tailored to help the beginner piano student , as well as , for parents or guardians who would supervise the practice sessions at home. My daughter has greatly improved her piano skills, learning to play the piano step by step, reading notes, proper use of fingers, checking with the rhythm, dynamics, etc.. I could see that my daughter is well grounded on theory and skills. Her teacher, Alexandra, is very patient with her and monitors her practice sessions at home based on the checklist provided. Moreover, Alexandra ( I should say the whole school itself), engages the students’ interest by involving the student in deciding which piano pieces they would tackle. Since my daughter loves to sing while she plays the piano, Alexandra has given her pieces like “Tomorrow” by Annie, “Someone Like You” by Adele, “Here Comes the Sun” by George Harrison and other Classical Songs (“Ode to Joy”, “Fur Elise”). It’s a mix of both Pop Culture and Classics (which makes it exciting rather than boring!!!). Treblemakers also offers a Music Day Camp every summer where the kids get to learn how to play different musical instruments such as drums, guitar and piano and incorporate them into a band (which I think is cool!). This elevates social dynamics in musical terms. If your child is very much into music, I believe this is a great opportunity for you to develop his/her abilities. My daughter loved working with Suzan at the camp. She indulged her musical interests by teaching her a lot of piano pieces and helping them with the band. Anthony, the co-owner, supervises the non-musical activities of the camp such as playing dodge ball in the park, go swimming or watch live musical performances at BAM. He works well with the kids engaging them in conversations that make the kids feel comfortable with the group. As the other reviews have said, it is more like working with a family. Needless to say, we are very much impressed with the school and happy that our daughter is in an environment where she can develop her talent and maximize her potential. We even have our 2nd daughter, age 4, start her piano classes this summer as well. She is very excited about having the same experience as her sister. My daughter has been taking private lessons with Suzan for over two years now. She started with half hour of piano, moved on to include an hour of chorus, and now (chorus has sadly disbanded) she is taking a one-hour lesson that includes piano, electric bass, and occasionally drums. Suzan's ability to hone-in on what makes a kid get excited about music, to know when to switch songs or instruments, when to gently push them to read instead of memorize, when to allow them to just wale on a drum set -- this is what sets her head and shoulders above so many other music teachers. Some people are just born to do what they do, and Suzan is definitely in this club. Last summer, we expanded our one-hour lesson to two weeks of music camp. One of the great things about this camp is that they keep the numbers small so every kid gets a LOT of individual attention. The camp is literally tailored to the children. If your child is interested in song-writing, Suzan will work with your child to write a song that s/he will then play in a band with the other campers. (or, just sing and accompany themselves if that's what they want to do). Every child gets a chance to try out different instruments, choose songs to play with or without others, but the general focus is allowing the kids to do what kids naturally do -- stick with something they are interested in for however long they are interested in it. And when they want to move on to something else, Suzan is right there pulling something out of her bottomless bag of tricks to entice them. I should also give a mention to Suzan's other half, her husband Anthony, who keeps everything running smoothly. He's the guy who handles the "other" kid stuff, such as handing out snacks, organizing some Garageband or balloon volleyball, giving the occasional shy or grumpy kid some extra attention, and generally making sure that everyone is happy at all times. During camp, he and Suzan took the kids to the Red Hook pool, and to see free live concerts in downtown Brooklyn. It's kind of like having your kid visit some of their favorite relatives more than it is a typical camp.(no subject)
Just wanted to share a recommendation for a wonderful piano and overall music teacher in Park Slope on Fifth ave between 8th and 9th Streets. Suzan Stroud is the instructor and a musician song writer herself. Her music center is called Treblemakers. My son Miles started piano lessons almost a year ago at the sweet summer camp she runs with her husband Anthony. Anthony is very inventive with garage band and great with kids and very gifted on the computer. Something wonderful was started for my son with Suzan, who has a unique and very kid-friendly teaching style. She helps the kids learn music they want to learn from day one- so my son started with The Pink Panther (he is 10). Now he is playing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, the theme song to Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series, music from Charlie Brown old TV specials and Fur Elise. He almost never needs to be told to practice and he calls family and friends to play concerts over the phone. I highly recommend Treblemakers for chorus,piano and other musical explorations.
