I plus one for Park Slope midwives
  • Re: Practices inclusive to older-older expecting parents

Park Slope Midwives. For example, the doc they refer to for sonograms and testing insisted that I had to do half day long stress tests for multiple weeks based solely on age, not on any indication at all of any tests, lack of movement, health care concerns. I wanted to decline, and the midwives absolutely backed me up on that. They deliver at Methodist.
  • Re: Park Slope Midwives, Guirguis Group, Brooklyn Methodist Experiences & Recommendations

I just gave birth at Methodist with Park Slope Midwives on September 8th, 2024. I also was seeing an OB and switched around 18 weeks. I had a really amazing experience. I felt heard, cared for, and they were super open to how I wanted to approach my labor and delivery. This was my first child, so I thought they did a great job explaining what was happening throughout my appts (testing, bloodwork, etc) and giving me options, in particular how many ultrasounds I wanted to do, which are done at a different location. I never felt rushed during an appt. I will also say the office staff is helpful and move quickly if you need something taken care of. Betsy was the midwife who delivered my daughter and she was one of my favorites, but I really loved everyone I met. At Methodist, the nurses were all really warm and caring in both L&D and the postpartum unit. I will add my pregnancy was low risk and fortunately without any big complications.

I second this. I was with Park slope midwives and they were absolutely AMAZING!! There are about 10 midwives at the practice and they rotate each midwife at every appointment so you get to meet every midwife, granted I don’t think I met all of them , some I met few more times than others. My very first appointment with Park slope midwives we met with Betsy who is at first impression (and I think the longest midwife there) was very eclectic but also militant, she initially intimated me and felt like that throughout my pregnancy (I think I met her twice for all my appointments) but on the day it was time for me to give birth to my son she was on call and I couldn’t have been more relived, she calmed me down while I cried as they took me to the theatre for my c-section - my son was breech and never once turned. She held my hand while I cried, talked me through it all while the were doing the surgery. I cannot recommend park slope midwives enough. They are amazing!!
  • ISO: OB/Brooklyn hospital/birthing center recommendations

Park slope midwives are amazing. They are contracted by NY Presbyterian - Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and deliver there but are very autonomous from the MDs. It was important to me to try for unmedicated birth, be able to eat and drink and push in different positions. They allowed all of it and went out of protocol to allow for extra interactions with our Doula. I get emotional thinking about how much park slope midwives and our doula did to advocate, protect and support myself, my partner and our son.

What month and year was your child born? April 2023 Review: I had a wonderful experience with Park Slope Midwives. All of the midwives were great, especially Donna, Roseanne, Julia, and Stephanie. They took the time to listen to me and never made me feel rushed. I felt so well taken care of. They have great bedside manner and take a very human approach. You don't feel like you're on a to-do list, as is so often the case at doctors' offices. I have often had anxiety attacks at the gynecologist, but this never happened at PSM because they're so calming. They deliver at Methodist, and one of them is always on hand there, so you get the comfort of the midwives but also top-quality medical care. When I had an emergency during the pregnancy, an obstetrician at the hospital checked on me as well. PSM also referred me to Unique Perinatal Care, a maternal/fetal medicine specialist, since I was over 35 and considered high risk. I went there for sonograms and genetic testing. They were great too.

What month and year was your child born? 06/22 Review: For my first pregnancy, I don't feel I was as supported as I could be. I liked the bedside manner of the midwives and felt like I was in good hands, but I was often confused about what was going on. I had a couple of complications, mainly breech and low amniotic fluid, and always had to call for test and sonogram results. The responses would also differ based on the midwife on duty. I think the midwives would be great for a second pregnancy once you know what questions to ask, but it was more challenging for a first pregnancy to know when to advocate for myself.

What month and year was your child born? May 2023 Review: The Park Slope Midwives were fantastic for my wife and me from our first appointment through our delivery. Deirdre Lehn and Betsy Arnold-Leahy were the midwives on duty when we delivered, and they handled our precipitous labor and delivery perfectly.

What month and year was your child born? February 2023 Review: Generally excellent. It was interesting to see a different midwife every appointment; all of which were great/nice/helpful but I definitely preferred seeing some over others; which is to be expected. It was easy to make appointments and I really felt they were all my advocates, especially at the hospital (they deliver at NY Presbyterian). One drawback is that you have to go elsewhere for sonograms which is sort of a pain.

What month and year was your child born? January 2023 Review: I had an amazing birth experience after a horrible pregnancy. My hospital birth felt like a home birth. My pushing experience was loving, supportive, warm and safe. I am so glad we went with a midwifery team. Because of my long induction (50-hours), we had five different shifts of midwives during birth. All were lovely! Each midwife showed up well rested and ready to go. I trusted their hands in my body. They explained everything and encouraged patient choice and voice in each step. I wish everyone could have a birth experience like mine. Because they are so good at what they do and because they are committed to taking patients with basically any and all insurance (I am on Medicaid with Fidelis), they are very busy. It means it can be difficult to communicate with them for prenatal and appointments can be delays. However, I am SO glad I didn't switch. Customer service for prenatal is nothing compared to the birth.

What month and year was your child born? 07/2022 Review: Park Slope Midwives is good if you're looking for a midwife and have a non-interventionalist mindset towards birth and pregnancy. The biggest downside is that they have a very large team and the midwife who delivered my baby (Betsy) I had not met at all during my pregnancy. I also was delivering on a holiday weekend and had scheduled every prenatal visit for Friday mornings so that may have lowered my chance of having a lot of overlap. Betsy is a bit grating, she lacks somewhat in bedside manner however I had a very long induction and pushed for more than three hours before ultimately my baby was vacuumed out by the attending OBGYN. I think without Betsy's tenacity and expertise I would have ended up having a c-section.

  • Park Slope Midwives

I gave birth with the Park Slope Midwives at NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Oct 2022. I had a very good experience for my birth and delivery. Betsy was the midwife on call and she is so experienced and knowledgeable-I felt secure and safe with her there. She was mostly hands-off until I needed her which is what I wanted-- it was just me, my partner, and my doula most of the time. All of the midwives I met with I liked. I also liked the staff at Brooklyn Methodist. We stayed two days and felt very taken care of and tended to. I would recommend. Only thing I wish is they offered nitrous oxide for birth!

What month and year was your child born? June 2022 Review: I really loved my experience with the midwives. My prenatal visits were often quick, but the midwives were always accommodating and took time to answer any questions or concerns that I had. There are a range of different midwives working there and you'll likely meet many of them over the course of your appointments so you hopefully see a familiar face when it's your birthing time. We lucked out with Betsy Arnold-Leahy being on duty when we got to the hospital -- she was fantastic during my son's birth. The midwives in the practice have decades of experience and are a calm, cool, collected, and very personable bunch. I appreciated that the prenatal care was largely hands-off, and patient-led.

  • Midwife practice for GYN?

We love Park Slope Midwives who are a part of NYP Methodist. They delivered three out of four of our babies and supported me tremendously even from afar with my fourth.
  • Looking for a new OB. Recommendations?

I have to second the Park Slope Midwives. I absolutely loved the care I got from them during my recent pregnancy (gave birth in July). They are all wonderful, and I felt so cared for throughout. I ultimately had an amazing birth experience.
  • Looking for a new OB. Recommendations?

I just gave birth at Methodist last month with Park Slope Midwives and had a great experience with both the practice and the hospital. One of the main reasons I chose PSM (besides wanting midwife care) was because I wanted to deliver close to home so my husband could more easily go back and forth to our older child. An added bonus is that I got a private room for probably a fraction of what I would have paid had I delivered in Manhattan. My birth experience with the midwives was so positive and I was very happy with the care I received from the hospital, as well. Should we have another baby I would definitely choose PSM again
  • Park Slope Midwives question

I delivered with park slope midwives in October. They are amazing and I cannot believe the support they gave me through the birth. Unfortunately they still don’t have a patient portal or an easy way to view / get results for tests except verbally. If you have any type of emergency or concern the after hours line is great and a midwife will always get back to you, but I felt like it was for emergencies only so only utilized it when I had serious concerns. Email doesn’t seem to ever be used by them! I hope they get a patient portal soon and an option to email the midwives with non emergency questions. All that said they are still amazing and were so invaluable during my birth. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
  • Park Slope Midwives question

I have a 9 month old now and was a patient with PS Midwives through this pregnancy (my second child) and 2 prior miscarriages. I found them incredibly responsive to phone calls. They always responded by the end of the same business day. I guess, depending on the issue, that can be a while, but I think it’s a reasonable expectation for office calls. They also had an after hours line that I utilized and received calls back within the hour. In the last month or so before my due date, they gave me three extra phone numbers so I could ALWAYS get a hold of someone. Of note, I switched from my prior OB because they were fine during my first pregnancy, but they were so nonresponsive during my first miscarriage that I couldn’t get over it. When I switched, I couldn’t believe the high level of responsiveness and care I received from the Midwives and wished I’d switched sooner.
  • OB/Gyn/Lactation Consultants/Peds knowledgeable about low milk supply

Also I highly recommend Park Slope Midwives for the pregnancy. In my experience, they didn’t have particular expertise in breastfeeding, but they really listen to their patients and empathize and try to problem solve. I felt like I was being heard and that there was an effort to balance my physical and emotional needs with that of the baby, which sadly is commonly not the experience.

Midwife: Laura Coogan from Park Slope Midwives Absolutely loved Laura. She was calm, gentle, and supported us when Dr./Nurse started pressuring to move birth along/begin breastfeeding.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

The midwives were absolutely amazing during my birth and when I needed to go to the hospital with a concern prior to birth. Without them I'm convinced I would have had to have has a caesection. They were knowledgeable and they advocated for me in the hospital and told me my options (whereas the hospital staff presented everything as having only one correct answer and only one option). I will always and forever be in their debt and feel inexpressible and deep love and gratitude. In terms of prenatal care I felt a little let down - appointments were very short. They always answered my questions but as a first time mom I didn't always know what questions to ask. Sonagrams are done offsite - they work with a place that is superrrrrrr far away from Park Slope. They do offer appointments two days a week at a location in park slope that is much better. The one that is super far away is kind of a nightmare - busy, rude front of desk staff, overwhelming! I also which that test results etc were available via a patient portal, when I went you had to ask verbally for all results.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

Solid, professional. You do see several midwives through your pregnancy so it is a bit of a toss up who will be attending your birth. There were a couple midwives I did not jive with, fortunately the midwife who was at my son's birth was someone I liked and trusted.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

We used Park Slope Midwives for our second child. The midwives deliver at New York Presbyterian - Methodist and have a few offices, but I went to the one on 9th Street. Overall, I was happy with my care. I wanted an unmedicated childbirth with few interventions and to work with practitioners who supported that. The one downside to the practice is that there are about 10 midwives in the group and you will meet with a different one for each appointment. This is to give you the chance to meet each one before your delivery, but makes it hard to establish any rapport with them.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

I transferred from Guirguis OBGYN, who I saw for my first birth, during my second trimester in order to get more personalized and supportive prenantal care. While I still felt like the visits were rushed and more similar to an OB than a midwife, I think the quality of care was good and I felt supported. The best part of the midwives is that they are so integrated with Methodist and their on-call line for labor is really helpful. I had an early false alarm labor and while I was kind of embarrassed, they were very kind and caring. I was very glad that they were already at Methodist Hospital and could easily see me right away in triage. When I went into labor, knowing that my first birth had been very quick, they were able to rush me through triage and get me a room. I think that the relationship they have with Methodist Hospital facilitated a really smooth process in getting checked into the hospital that I didn't experience when I was a Guirgius patient. If you want to give birth at Methodist Hospital, which is what I wanted based on my previous experience with them and wanting to be close to home, I think the Park Slope Midwives are the way to go.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

I loved working with the park slope midwives. They have a generally less hands-on approach than an OB I think, low intervention, and very chill. Sometimes it left me wanting a bit more *data* (scans etc.), but appointments were long and I could ask any questions I had. Never felt rushed. Also, I went until 41 weeks and at that point would have loved the option induction as I was OVER IT but they don't induce until after 41! I went into labor naturally at 40 weeks and 6 days.
  • OB who takes Health First?

I used the Park Slope Midwives and loved them. They take Healthfirst.
  • Review from the 2021 Birthing Experience Survey

I really wanted to like the Midwives more than I did. I transferred to their practice because I liked their hands-on, comforting approach, but when my pregnancy became high risk, they were really unable to help me besides offering moral support. They WERE supportive but looking back I should have transferred to a MFM specialist (and they should have connected me with one). Additionally I'll add they were a bit disorganized compared to the OBGYNs I've seen. But you really can't put a price on how much comfort and care they offer just by sitting down and talking to you, which so many OBs won't bother doing.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

Fair: yes, it's a large group practice, but I found their approach very impersonal (no effort to compensate for the large practice model or the anonymity due to Covid mask-wearing) ... I had a smooth, uneventful labor (2nd pregnancy) and I felt pressured by the midwife to "move things along" with some kind of intervention - this is exactly why I DIDN'T go to an ObGyn in the first place! I didn't listen to her and continued with my relaxed labor on my own terms :o) Baby came out within 5 hours of my arrival without complications.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I moved from an OB-GYN group with Mt Sinai to Park Slope Midwives pretty late in my pregnancy, around 24 weeks. I just didn't love the doctors at Sinai - some were ok, others were really dismissive and one guy was particularly terrible - and I wanted to try to have an unmedicated birth if possible, but with the flexibility and open mind that I would 100% take the interventions if needed. The Midwives had the same ethos - try to manage the pain, but intervene when needed. I didn't get to meet everyone in the practice because I joined late and my baby arrived early, but everyone I met was really nice. Shannon was my midwive during the birth and she was great, really calm and supportive.
  • Park Slope Midwives

My partner delivered at Methodist in January with PSM as her OB for the birth. We went with them after week 14. Unfortunately cannot speak to COVID-19 protocols but I can say that I was present for almost every visit and the entire labor and the care and attention from the practice was incredible. From a cis male partner perspective - they were always open to questions, made a great effort to accommodate preferences and were specifically tuned to her needs for sound and external input reduction. I feel confident that she agrees with me and she's stated if we're here for number two, it'll be with PSM again.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I moved from Sunset Park to Bed Stuy 5 months into my pregnancy, and because I hadn't had a great experience with Boro Park Midwives, and because it was pretty far to travel by train in the midst of the pandemic, I switched to Park Slope Midwives. At first I loved them— felt that all the midwives' bedside manner was much better than at Boro Park. But over time, I became a little bit disillusioned. Advice was uneven and not that great at the end of my pregnancy when I was trying to encourage my baby to descend. They ""let me"" go to 42 weeks, which was good, but then I was strongly encouraged to go in for an induction. They scheduled my induction for a Friday, which happened to be the one night when the in-hospital doulas they'd hired at the beginning of covid were not available. I had a really abysmal time laboring through the night with a midwife I'd never met previously— Betsy Arnold-Leahy. I would describe her bedside manner as aggressive and almost hostile. Whenever she entered the room she'd ask me if I was ready for an epidural yet. When I'd answer not yet, she say I needed to be in more pain and that she wanted to see me crying. I kept trying to laugh off her remarks as if they were ""tough love"" jokes, but afterwards, when I was able to reflect on the experience, I realized that It was deeply unsettling. I felt intimidated; I didn't feel safe with her. Later on, I spoke with the person with whom I'd taken a childbirth class about my labor and delivery experience and she responded that she had once attended a birth with Betsy as midwife and had experienced the same bedside manner. She encouraged me to speak to the head of the practice, but I haven't found the emotional reserves to do so yet.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I switched to PSM at 20 weeks pregnant both to have my care and delivery closer to home in Brooklyn, and to seek a less medicalized, more human-first, holistic, and flexible approach to my pregnancy and delivery. I wanted to have an unmedicated, as close to natural and "at home" birth experience as possible, while in a hospital as my husband and family were not comfortable with a home birth. I found that PSM do not at all offer the attentive "midwife" approach I hoped they would. They seemed much more like OB-GYNs in training, and their care was very cursory and minimal. My appointments were incredibly fast, they barely asked me any questions, and their responses to my questions were very brief. They did not even note much less confirm the baby's position with a sonogram until week 37 when we discovered baby was breech. I was not able to attempt an ECV because they instructed me not to drink water for 8+ hours before the procedure, so when the doctor finally saw me I was so dehydrated it caused braxton hicks contractions. They then mandated that I schedule a c-section without fully explaining the statistical risk of delivering breech, and were very difficult to accept that I wanted to schedule the c for 40 weeks instead of 39, since there was zero emergency risk to the baby. After the c-section, I learned I had additional tearing in my uterus during delivery, but the midwife who attended was not able to explain to me what that meant other than I was not a candidate for a VBAC. They also pushed me to go on birth control at my 6 week post-partum check up, without explaining the option of relying on exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months. Overall I feel very disappointed with their care. They push strict OB and hospital policies without much explanation or discussion of alternatives. I will not be working with them in a subsequent pregnancy.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I loved every midwife in this practice except for one of them, Betsy. Every other midwife I saw was really friendly and I felt that I could communicate openly with them.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I just LOVE them. Cannot overstate that enough. Professional, caring, thorough, grounded, wise. Saw me through 8 months of routine care then spotted an issue at 36weeks, scheduled all necessary montiroing and precautions, saw my son and me through a pleasant (as births go) and safe vaginal delivery nevertheless! I will continue seeing them forever now, as they also do regular gyn care - screenings and annuals and pap smears and birth control etc.

  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with the Park Slope Midwives - I only wish I had seen them from the start of my pregnancy. I switched over to their care A WEEK before my due date, as COVID ramped up and I worried about my ability to get to and be safe at Mt Sinai UWS from home in Prospect Heights. I emailed in desperation on a Sunday afternoon and got a response that evening and an appointment the next day. Between two prenatal appointments and my labor, I saw five midwives and with every one I felt listened to, supported, and dare I say loved during what was a crazy, chaotic, and scary time for me of course but also for them. I was in labor for 3 days and the midwives of course switched shifts during that time but I felt my care was seamless, knowing that they were in constant communication with one another and keeping one another updated on my progress. When I had some complications and needed an unplanned C section, my midwife consulted regularly with the OB on duty who ended up doing the surgery, so I felt safe having that extra layer of support. Even the small interactions I've had with their office, needing to get insurance papers signed and the like, it's clear that everyone there cares so much about what they do and their patients. I recommend them 100x.

  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

Sadly they were just ok. I definitely wish I had gone with a smaller midwifery practice. There are eight midwives in the group and though I met all of them it was impossible to build any kind of a relationship with any of them. There was a lot that was offered/promised that didn’t happen. I didn’t feel well cared for or looked after.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I really liked being with Park Slope Midwives. I felt well cared for throughout the pregnancy and they were very receptive to my birth plan (no epidural, as intervention free as possible). At the hospital, the midwife on call, Laura, was with me nearly the whole time. Since I didn't have an epidural, I was able to use the shower and move around, which was so helpful during active labor. I ended up pushing for 3+ hours (this was my first baby). At the 3 hour mark, the midwife had to bring in an OBGYN because that was a rule at the hospital. The OBGYN suggested using a vacuum, which I didn't want. My midwives were supportive of me pushing for longer instead of using the vacuum. At the very end (about half an hour later), my baby's heart rate was dropping as his head got stuck on the way out. The OBGYN came back and gave me a small episiotomy without asking. I didn't want this but understand the need, considering the circumstances. Overall, the midwives were wonderful. A few weeks later, one of my stitches ripped and the midwives saw me right away, extending their hours to make sure I could be seen. I plan on using them for my second pregnancy (whenever that happens)!

The midwives were amazing. I had several high-risk factors and I’m a worrier and they were able to help me navigate well. When covid hit, they communicated really clearly about changes at the hospital. They approached my labor and delivery and postpartum care with total compassion.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

All in all a good experience. My Labor progressed quickly and my OB barely made it in time. The midwife on call basically delivered me and I loved her (park slope midwives). We opted for a private room, but my husbands bed was broken and he wasn’t overly happy to be paying for a broken bed. Food was terrible. Bring your own.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

We really wanted to use Park Slope Midwives, but it didn't work out because of an insurance issue. I had an initial appointment there when I found out I was pregnant, but my insurance would not cover them because one of the midwives did not have the certification they required for coverage. I recommend that you double check with your insurance provider if you use a midwife, as apparently this can get quite tricky.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I transferred at about 26 weeks from an OB-GYN in Manhattan to the midwives. They were everything I didn't find with my OB-GYN - warm, laidback, and supportive of my birth preferences. Tanya was the midwife present for my delivery, and she was great! Patient and reassuring through 2.5 hours of pushing.

  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

They were absolutely awesome during my pregnancy! I am a bit luke warm about my birthing experience, though. The midwife who was working throughout most of my labor was incredible. Very attentive and communicative. Then there was a shift change right before I started pushing — the midwife who came on shift for this portion felt a bit distant. She took a phone call while I was pushing and she didn't really engage much with me or what I was feeling. She was, however, very skilled and communicated with the rest of the hospital team.

Highly recommend Park Slope Midwives if your looking for a personal, low-intervention care
  • Experience with Park Slope Midwives or Spring OBGYN?

Replying to this thread with a glowing review of the Park Slope Midwives. I delivered with them four years ago at 42.5 weeks pregnant and they were calm, patient and low intervention throughout the whole thing, even when I inevitably needed an induction. As opposed to other practices that jump to inducing with Pitocin, the midwives did multiple rounds of a cervix softener to prep my body better for labor with pitocin, which, by the time we started that, I was much more ready for. I’m currently nearly 41 weeks pregnant with my second (and 38 years old) and this time around, have felt additional appreciation for the midwives’ wealth of knowledge and their consistently reassuring attitudes. Even through their telehealth visits (during this bonkers time), they’ve been able to make me feel seen, known, and really well cared for.
  • Experience with Guirguis office (and Methodist)

I switched to Park Slope Midwives and the experience could not be any more different, in terms of communication. When I call with a question midday, a midwife either calls or texts (if requested) within a couple of hours. I'd highly recommend them.
  • Obgyn ?

There are several practices that deliver at hospitals in NYC, including Park Slope Midwives, who deliver at NY Presbyterian Methodist right here in Park Slope. They delivered my son and will be delivering my next baby in another month or so. I recommend them!
  • Recommendations needed for Birthing Hospitals

I have two friends who recently give birth at Methodist with the midwives and they both had good experiences and were able to get private rooms for recovery. One friend had to switch to the PS Midwives in her 33rd week because of a problem with the midwife practice she was with. I know PS Midwives will take new patients at almost any stage of pregnancy.
  • Help! Park Slope Midwives v. Brooklyn Birthing Center v. ???

I had both of my children with the Park Slope Midwives. The most recent 11 weeks ago! I truly felt supported during both deliveries and had a doula both times who they worked well with and were supportive of. I had 2 vaginal deliveries. An epidural and pitosin with the first because of a 3 day labor and no sleep. The second went much faster and they allowed me to labor in the shower at the hospital which was wonderful and something I wanted to experience during labor. Also, the imaging center they work with has a location in Park Slope now with Friday hours. I just made sure all of my appointments were there. Methodist was overall a good experience. Their nurses are wonderful. We paid for a private room and it is worth it if you can swing it and on the cheaper side for NYC hospitals.
  • Help! Park Slope Midwives v. Brooklyn Birthing Center v. ???

I cannot recommend PSMW enough! I birthed three of my kids with them. Throughout all the pregnancies and labors I felt supported by them and felt that I could trust them. The trust and comfort is so important. Make sure you feel that way wherever you go! The last two labors were pretty swift compared to my first. My first was super long and I pushed for two hours. I actually went back home after being told I was 4cm and I was given the option to take a room or go home (obviously this depends on what’s going on at the hospital L&D). I went home. I had told them I wanted to try to go without the epidural and I felt no judgement because of this. I never put on a hospital gown and nurses and midwives were okay with this. In retrospect, despite pushing two hours and feeling like I could have been on the cusp of being dragged to the OR, and also agreeing to an episiotomy (get that baby out!!), I was able to deliver vaginally and ultimately did not get an episiotomy - I owe this to the confidence, expertise, experience and patience of the midwife. I had a doula with my first two labors and had a positive experience - I think they would say the same? Wait times can vary for the PSMW depending upon when you need to go in. But the midwives will spend time with you and answer your questions. I also feel like since they are now in a relationship with NYP things have felt a little less home-y. Honestly, all good changes for the providers and the patients - but I sort of liked the laid back approach of pre-NYP (midwives took VS, you interpreted your own pee in a cup...). Really nothing to complain about. Like I said changes that were probably better for everyone. As for a private room, we were always able to have one. Just depends on the night / day of course. If you can swing it, it is so worth it to have a private room. Plus if it is your second, this will feel like a vacation (haha sort of?), and I was happy to stay the full two days (I was also strep positive for my last two kiddos). I hate saying this - and I still have to write NYP - but I was less impressed with some of their staff during the last stay whereas I had no such complaints like this before with Methodist. I cannot generalize though and plenty of other encounters overshadow this one - but during one shift, a MA was talking on their phone while taking my vitals. It was sort of hilarious cause I thought she was talking to me, and then I realized she wasn’t! With our ubiquitous phones, this behavior is a challenge everywhere these days though.

The PS Midwives delivered both of my girls, 5 years apart. Methodist has greatly improved since kid #1, thank goodness, and everything went really smoothly. We sprung for the private room for kid #2, we were able to get one despite a busy day. I found the midwives throughout my pregnancy really took their time to talk and work through any concerns. I never felt rushed. The waits weren't bad at all. I felt incredibly supported. I was an "older" mom the second time around, but age was just a number, and no big deal to them. The hospital has also hired a new, younger LC who is incredible, and the nursers were so much more attentive than in 2012. I had a C-section with both kids -- first one was emergency -- and the surgeons were thoughtful and kind. Both times a midwife was in the room the whole time with us. As they put it, we don't just turf out our patients. I felt like I had a doula with me in the OR. I still run into them on the street and they're delighted to see the kids. The only drawback to the midwives is that they work with a doctor near Bay Ridge for all imaging, and it's a bit of a schlep (though parking is easy over there). But really, can't recommend their model of care enough.
  • Help! Park Slope Midwives v. Brooklyn Birthing Center v. ???

I had both my sons with park slope midwives at Methodist hospital. I went into my first delivery with a doula and a plan to stay med free. Unfortunately my son was ill positioned and after over 3 hours of pushing I ended up with a c section. With my second I tried to vbac, and he was late, huge and also ill positioned so I also had a c section with him. Regardless of the birthing outcomes to not be what I planned/hoped for, I felt truly taken care of and felt confident in their assistance in steering me through pregnancy and birth. They also work with an excellent MFM who oversaw both pregnancies. With both csections I had 2 truly wonderful surgeons who also gave great aftercare. Also in both circumstances I ended up with a private room and my husband could stay with us. It is not guaranteed, but the friends I’ve had give birth there and want a private room all were able to obtain one. The going rate for this as of April was $350/night however it’s my understanding that is cheap as my brother and his wife just paid $900/night at mt Sinai, and truth be told had a horrible experience with a serious aftercare issue that could have been fatal for my sister in law. It was also important to me to be close to the hospital (walking distance is amazing whilst in labor!) but also so my first son, husband and my mother could come and go very easily for my seconds birth. The midwives discharged us a day early as we were all doing fantastic. The discharge also depends on the pediatrician, as your baby and you have different doctors after birth. I would highly recommend park slope midwives. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have additional questions!

Genuinely care for you, remember your name. You see every midwife in the practice during your pregnancy so you will definitely know who is on duty. I liked all of the midwives on their team. Except for the first appt, I was in and out super quick for all of those monthly then weekly then daily visits.
  • 2019 Birth Survey

They are great at putting you at ease and reminding you that childbirth is natural. They never once said the phrase “geriatric pregnancy” (I was 38). I ended up having a c section 2 weeks after the due date. In hindsight I wish that they had taken them up on their casual offers to induce with cervadim sooner. We got an infection and my baby ended up in the NICU. They checked in on me and my baby every day that we were in the hospital. I recommend them even though I did not have the super natural birth I had hoped for.
  • 2019 Birth Survey

I was expecting much more support of my desire for a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean). Indeed, they took me on as a transfer from a more traditional OB-GYN practice with the promise that they were VBAC friendly and the assurance that I was a good VBAC candidate. As my pregnancy progressed, and as I saw more of the midwives, they started to bring up policies -- like that I had to have a c-section scheduled at 40 weeks -- that weren't VBAC friendly. I had to stand up to them, given that the evidence doesn't indicate that a c-section at 40 weeks is necessary. In general, there wasn't a great deal of continuity of care across my pregnancy nor a real consensus on best practices across the midwives. I have the feeling that they don't communicate well or keep good records. I suspect that if anything medically complex were to go on, they wouldn't be able to handle it. That said, I think they're really great at catching babies. That's where their strengths lie. Another criticism: I complained to one of the midwives who looked in on my the day after my birth that I was concerned that I was not able to control my urinary tract, and she laughed at me and told me to get used to it, saying something to the effect that all women who have given birth vaginally are incontinent. She didn't have enough details, as she didn't ask follow-up questions, to know whether this was a medical complication or something routine. Moreover, her making fun -- even when supposedly done in solidarity (she mentioned she was also incontinent after birth and was perhaps trying to make light) was unprofessional. I found it cruel. Tanya at PSMW is awesome. She caught my son and is not the cruel midwife who laughed at my incontinence.
  • Park Slope Midwives

I delivered both of my kids with PSM, and had positive experiences. I saw them before my pregnancies and continue to see them for regular exams. I really wanted to meet all the midwives before delivery, and told them this. They made a point of booking my appointments with different women every time towards the end. I think my favorite part about their practice is that it’s all women. I ended up having my least favorite deliver my second child, and by the end I really liked her. I also thought the delivery nurses were amazing at Methodist. Recovery nurses were mixed, and we also were glad we got a private room- even though all the rooms are kinda depressing and the food is so terrible. I had a doula the first time and learned an important lesson that can help anyone having a baby- ask for what you want. You want to take the monitors off, walk around, turn up the ac, turn down the lights, be left alone, have more time to think about interventions- just ask!
  • Park Slope Midwives

I cannot speak highly enough about PSM and my delivery experience at Methodist. I was not able to meet all the midwives prior to labor, but trusted the practice as a whole. I did end up meeting everyone by the end of my stay at Methodist/6 week PP appointment. The practice has been at Methodist for years, and you can just sense their respected presence on the L&D floor. I had heard about contentious or just very separate relationships with midwives at hospitals in NYC, but that is not the case at Methodist. I never saw the attending OBGYN, but knew that if I did need a c-section, I would also be in good hands. The nursing staff was professional and so encouraging both in L&D and Mother/Baby. I also appreciated the breastfeeding help from the lactation consultants after my daughter was born. My prenatal care was very short! I think I only had three visits, but again, felt that the practice as a whole matched the approach I was looking for. I even felt reassured the morning I went into labor- I spoke to two midwives before coming into the hospital, and they were able to help assess when I should come in (wanting to labor as long as possible at home). I actually arrived at the hospital 8 cm and was grateful to have been in contact with the midwives (for guidance) but also at home (for comfort). I had a doula- and while I could go on and on about her expertise, I was also so impressed with how seamlessly the PSM midwives worked with her, allowing her to do her work with my husband and I, but also as a full team (midwife, doula, nurse, partners, and baby!) All that to say, if you are interested in a doula, PSM welcomes them. Yes, the midwives have different personalities! I welcomed the variety, as I thought it strengthened the practice as a whole. If I had a question, I found direct, open and honest conversation was always encouraged. I had left a practice where I consistently felt judged and shut down, and did not experience that at all at PSM, even with the different personalities. If we are able to have a second, I will definitely stick with PSM and Methodist!
  • Park Slope Midwives

I delivered my son with the Park Slope Midwives and had a looong labor (almost 3 days) and with the support of my Doula (Mary Esther Malloy) and the midwives was very happy with my birth experience. I switched to the midwives pretty late in my pregnancy so I was not able to meet with all of them before I gave birth, but because my labor was so long I was able to see almost all of them during the process :) They were very supportive of my birth plan and especially supportive during the 2 hours of pushing. The nurses at the hospital were also wonderful, my son was in the NICU for a couple days and the nurses there were INCREDIBLE. I am now expecting #2 in July and going through the early stages with the midwives and very happy to see all of them again. Good luck and trust your instincts! You got this!
  • Park Slope Midwives

I gave birth with Park Slope Midwives in March 2017 and had a good experience. Yes, you won't know which midwife you'll have with you during labor, and there were some I liked better than others. I had a long labor (36 hours) and went through 3 shifts of midwives (all of who I met before), and I landed on the one I felt closest to when it was time to push, so that worked out great for me! It happened to be a slow night when I was in labor, so I had a wonderful midwife by my side most of the time, who chatted with me and my husband and kept us relaxed. What I would recommend if you go with them is trying your best to meet all the midwives. They do try to make this happen, but I ended up not meeting two. I would also take their birth class so you can get a sense of how things will go with them and at Methodist. I also met one of the midwives at Methodist so she could give me and my husband a tour of the maternity ward, instead of doing the Methodist tour, which gave me yet another opportunity to see how things would go with them and spend more time with a midwife (who ended up being the one who caught my baby). I liked that some midwives had more holistic approaches, too, and by having more than one midwife, I got a spectrum of advice. AND, I'm pretty sure that midwife doesn't attend many births, which is why she's in the office more often for prenatal visits.
  • Park Slope Midwives

I had a really wonderful delivery experience at Methodist hospital with the midwives in March '18. I actually didn't like my prenatal care with them all that much, so was a little wary toward the end of my pregnancy, but my experience during labor & delivery was incredibly positive. I hadn't met either midwife who was there when I came in, but that didn't feel like a drawback in the moment. I elected for an epidural, and the wait time between saying I was ready for it and the anesthesiologist arriving was very short. I liked that the midwives didn't hover over me or give the impression of anxiously waiting for certain centimeters of dilation by certain times, and once I was fully dilated, they didn't rush me into pushing before I felt the urge. I didn't opt for a private room post-delivery, but ended up alone in mine and my husband was able to stay with me one of the nights. My son ended up needing phototherapy for jaundice and the nursing staff respected my wish to bring the UV setup to my room instead of doing it in the nursery. The nurses and nursing assistants in general were very warm and kind. I received slightly conflicting advice/input regarding how to address my baby not latching from the pediatrician vs. lactation consultant vs. nursing staff, but I expect that difference in perspective might have occurred no matter the setting. As far as what I didn't love about the prenatal care - I ended up seeing one midwife for most of my appointments who I found quite brusque and a bit paternalistic (refusing me meds for morning sickness for non-evidence based reasons, chastising me for weight gain that was within normal range). I liked my prenatal appointments with the other midwives so she seemed to be a strong exception.

  • OBGYN Recommendations?

Not sure where you live but if you’re in BK try Park Slope Midwives! We started with an OB who delivered at NYU but we ended up switching to Park Slope Midwives who deliver at Methodist. We were SO happy not to have to drive back to BK from NYU. Working with midwives made my wife (and me) feel really safe, heard, and informed. There might be great midwifery groups that deliver at those hospitals as well!
  • 2018 Birth Survey

I had a very difficult experience with this midwife, who was ultimately present for the delivery of my child. She was distracted throughout my labor (I had complications and an infection over the course of 46 hours, receiving every possible intervention and ultimately delivering via c-section). She was gossiping with the nurse and checking instagram during my active pushing stage (which was allowed to last for 4-5 hours), and missed several contractions due to these distractions. Additionally, her tone and manner were not encouraging; at several points she asked me, "Are you even pushing?" Given that the practice rotates midwives and you never know who will be present for your delivery, I will not be working with Park Slope Midwives again.

I really loved my experience with Park Slope Midwives. I wanted to deliver in Brooklyn and was happy that they partner with Methodist to do hospital births there. I really liked all of the midwives in the practice (I think there are 7?) and tried to see everyone there before I gave birth. The office is not fancy -- you might even say it's a little dingy -- but I found it to be more my speed than the fancy OB-GYN offices I used to go to in Mahnattan. The midwives generally took their time during appointments, allowing plenty of opportunity for questions. They were always positive, encouraging and never needlessly worried me about anything. I also appreciated that they do offer some late-day appointments during the week, although things do tend to run behind at that hour and I waited an hour once or twice for my appointments. I ended up needing an emergency C-section after many hours in labor, but I feel okay about it -- I felt like I had the best chance of not having a C-section that I could have had, and I really appreciated that they put my health and my baby's health first and also stayed with me and were really comforting during the procedure.

All the ladies are super nice and take all the time you need to answer all your questions. McKenna delivered my baby and she was absolutely wonderful. She spent a lot of time with me, finding different positions, techniques. I had a very long labor and my baby was getting caught under my pelvic bone when I pushed, so McKenna advised me to use a vacuum extractor which kept me away from a C-section.

A few things to note: you will wait. I never didn't wait. After work or in the afternoons, it would be at least an hour. Towards the end when I could schedule morning appointments, it would be at least 30 minutes. Just resign yourself to the situation and you'll be fine. Liz the receptionist SEEMS gruff, but she's truly a softy. But don't be rude to her on the phone though, she doesn't play that way. I overheard many a tongue lashing. I wanted to deliver my second close to home at Methodist and wanted to try for a VBAC. PSM were the most supportive practice of that, so I went with them. IMHO, they are not your typical midwives who take their time with your appointment because they are a very busy practice, but I never had a question unanswered. I was also a second time mom, so I definitely had less to ask about. Some of the midwives are stronger than others with interpersonal skills but Jessie and McKenna are really lovely. Everyone was rooting for me to get my VBAC, and even let me go past their customary limit of 41 weeks but it was not to be and I ended up with a scheduled section. Betsy was the midwife on duty, and in the office she seemed stern so I was nervous, but she truly could not have been more lovely, ensuring that I got as gentle a cesarean as possible, which I did. The OB they worked with cuts a flap in the surgical drape and pulls the baby out and then pushes the baby through directly to the mom, and it made a world of difference over my last birth. Betsy stood in the OR and told my partner and I everything that was happening, and immediately checked on us in the recovery room. I think with the wait time, I won't be going to them for annual checkups but would definitely consider for another birth. Based on May 2017 birthing experience

I can't rate my experience here more highly: I wanted a more personal, less commercial and 'medical' approach - one more comparable to my experience in the U.K. You need to find something that you're happy with and it's a very personal decision. I found each midwife here to be friendly, caring, supportive and a very good listener, and with vast experience on top. The practice tries to ensure you meet all of midwives through your prenatal check ups, so you will already know the person who delivers your baby. Should you require medical intervention, the practice has a number of doctors they can call on. The warmth and caring environment helped me feel very positive about the birth and I think that helped me feel relaxed about the event, and made it more straight forward. I thought I liked the idea of a hands-off approach and the cycling though of midwives during appointments so I would know them all for birth.... Well, it meant I never really got to know anyone at all, nothing in-depth was ever asked of me, there were differing answers to my concerns, I never met everyone (they don't have a system that keeps track, and had the 2 people I did't know as 2 of the 3 people I was in labor with) and my experience was fairly disappointing overall. LOVED Jocelyn and McKenna; was lucky enough to have Jocelyn on shift when I entered the hospital. My baby arrived with many glitches but the midwives were extremely supportive though it all!! I can't thank them enough for that!!! I would choose 1 midwife if I ever give birth again. Based on August 2016 birth experience

Chose them as I wanted a VBAC and wanted to use a midwife this time (this is my 2nd child). I really liked Jessie and a few others, but couldn't help but feel they took a more "conservative" approach to VBAC as I approached the end. They want to schedule an RCS for you after 40 weeks, no later than day 1 of 41 weeks. I pushed on that and was able to get more time. Ultimately I did have an RCS as the baby was not coming on his own, and the OB they scheduled me with was lovely and did a great job. I was able to have a "gentle" c-section. There was also a big miscommunication when it came time for my son to get circumcised. Someone dropped the ball big time, and we ended up having to track down a midwife (Tanya) that should have come to us the morning we were leaving to coordinate it. She said no one told her although the prior 2 days it was reiterated to me to expect her to do it that day. We ended up getting discharged at 5pm instead of that morning, and spent the majority of the day stressed and trying to get information. I do feel like overall I was in good hands, I just think you may get more support for a VBAC at a smaller midwife practice, and that communication across the team is not a strong point for them. I've been going to Park Slope Midwives for many years for GYN needs, and it was a pleasure working with them for the birth! They considered my birth high-risk, so I was co-managed with a specialist, who did regular ultrasound monitoring. Park Slope Midwives were very supportive and kept a close watch on me during labor, and I think they did all they could to help me deliver naturally. They have a low rate of C-sections, so I fully trusted them when they thought a C-section was necessary. I would gladly use them again if I have a second child. I was very pleased with the practice. This was my second child, and I knew that I wanted to have a natural birth and they helped me achieve this. I expected to have an easy pregnancy and birth, and that's what happened, so what I needed from them was pretty straightforward. I liked all of the practitioners and would have been comfortable with anyone at my delivery. But I also didn't have any concerns about knowing who exactly would be there (after my first, I realized that the level of involvement at the hospital is actually pretty minimal!). Park Slope Midwives - Betsy Arnold Leahy Review: We had a great experience with Park Slope Midwives! Each of the midwives I met throughout my pregnancy were excellent, and I don't know that I would've been able to get through my natural birth without Betsy, who was very reassuring and competent. The only negative is that there is often a wait for your appointment time, though this varies depending on the week. I've had instances where I was taken in a few minutes early because they were running early/on time - and I've also had instances where I waited two hours because they were really backed up after a holiday. In general, the wait was in between the two. Insurance: They took Aetna, and we had no issues. Only payment I ever made was my co-pay for the very first visit ($40). Based on a October birth

My delivery was complicated (5 hours of pushing, sunny-side-up baby, episiotomy, vacuum-assist and then a baby with infant hypoglycemia) and they were just awesome. I felt like I had so much support, and felt like I couldn't be in more competent hands. My baby was delivered by Roseanne and Betsy. They ended up calling in the head of OBGYN at Methodist to help out because he can turn sunny-side-up babies. He was wonderful as well. They had all worked together for a long time, and pointed out that I had about 100 years of combined experience helping me deliver! During my pregnancy and post-partum visits I seemed to mostly meet with Jess, who I loved. Member Review: I wanted to deliver at Methodist with as little intervention as possible. Sought out midwives who delivered at hospitals specifically. I'd read mixed reviews about the PS midwives but thought I'd try them out. I found them to be exactly what I'd want during pregnancy. They were fairly hands off - my concerns were addressed but usually not with tests. They did the basic standard tests, including gestational diabetes and bloodwork, but way less than many of the docs my friends went to. Since there are many midwives (6?) in the practice I saw them all and appreciated the demeanor of some over others. I ended up delivering at Methodist with the one midwife I didn't really connect with but she was fine, while I would have preferred a different attitude from her, I do think she saved me from some interventions that would have been unnecessary. I think many of the issues I had there were more to do with Methodist policy than her care. They can be dismissive of concerns and while I never minded the wait, there always was a wait. Insurance details: Very easy insurance-wise. Review based on birth of 2014 baby

Member Review: Park Slope Midwives were just great -- I love working with them, and had great experiences with nearly every midwife I met. They were supportive and very calm about everything, which I really needed: they made pregnancy and delivery feel like a totally normal, manageable experience, and not a major medical emergency. I really appreciated that. My delivery with them was just amazing -- I cannot recommend highly enough the experience of having a calm, knowledgeable, experienced midwife at delivery. That said, there are a few drawbacks with this practice. They are terribly overburdened, and getting an appointment can be tough. They were always very nice about accommodating me towards the end of my pregnancy, but in the early months, and postpartum, it was almost impossible to get in to see them if I felt I needed to, and wait times in the office were often long, especially towards the end of the day. And, for the same reasons, I never called with questions or concerns during off hours -- it felt like too much of a burden, and there are times I wished I felt I could call. But when I went into labor, they were very responsive and quick. Insurance details: They took my insurance and were just awesome about it. Absolutely no hassles on this front. Park Slope Midwives 9th St. Member Review: I loved this practice. I almost never had to wait and all the midwives were very supportive and helpful. Since this was my second pregnancy I didn't want so much oversight or need it and I felt that the midwives meet the perfect balance of ensuring a healthy pregnancy and leaving well enough alone. Insurance details: Yes, and I had no issues. Review based on birth of 2014 baby

Member Review: I decided to use the Park Slope Midwives because I had decided awhile before I got pregnant that I would rather use a midwife. PSM delivers at Methodist, which was also quite convenient to home. I liked the idea of having midwives that were in the neighborhood and delivering at a hospital to alleviate the worries my husband had about something going wrong. My experience with Park Slope Midwives was fine. It was neither wonderful nor terrible. The midwives are all very kind and warm people, and I don't have anything but nice things to say about them all. There were just a lot of them, and I didn't feel like I had a chance to connect with any of them. They had all my records available so it was not like they didn't know what was going on with me, but it felt just a bit inconsistent from visit to visit. I think if I were to do it again, I would go with a smaller practice. Most of the time, I did not feel rushed out of the appointment, although there does seem to get to be quite a backup in appointments as it gets later in the day and the waits get longer. I do think there were a couple of times that I waited 45 minutes or so to be seen. One of the things I'm unhappy about is that I didn't feel that there was good communication with me about what testing strep B pos would mean in the delivery room. I made a decision NOT to read anything online about my pregnancy because I find that medical information online often just leads to panic, but I do wish there had been a better explanation as to what this could have meant. For me, what it meant was a chain of interventions resulting in a C-section, which is precisely what I did not want. I am not saying that I think things in the delivery room could've gone differently - that I simply do not know. What I do wish is that I had been better prepared for the possibilities. I could have asked more questions, so I am also responsible there. I will say that it was wonderful to have the midwives check in on me at the hospital several times, and that they were good listeners when I came in for follow-up visits postpartum. I think that they are a group of warm, caring women who know what they're doing. I guess I just wasn't over the moon with the practice as a whole. Insurance details: I had no insurance issues with them, but I did have a lot of insurance issues with Dr. Pozharny, who they use for ultrasounds. Review based on birth of 2014 baby
  • OB/GYN backup at Park Slope Midwives

I delivered both times with their backups due to c/sections. One of the midwifes was always there too, in fact I remember holding Anne's hand while going under. The first doctor was (I believe ) dr. Santos, the name of the second doctor- I can't remember, but both were good. (November 2014)

.i ended up with a c-section after 48 hours of in-active labor after my water broke. Turns out he was sunny side up w the cord around his neck, wasn't going to budge. They were all great! The receptionist is a little gruff but she's old school Brooklyn and actually quite sweet. She grows on you :)

I had a wonderful birth with Jessie Goldman at Park Slope Midwives. She was spectacular. I wasn't necessarily instructed to pick one midwife in particular, but I was definitely with Jessie more often than anyone else. Perhaps our schedules just meshed, or perhaps we really were assigned to one another - you could ask at the desk if choosing someone specific is an option. In terms of the testing, yes, they will send you to Methodist for all of the standard 12 week/20 week events, and they will doppler in the office, but there are far fewer "visuals" than I got the first time around with an OB in Manhattan. My first delivery was at SLR and I can honestly say that, although I had a good birth the first time around (unmedicated, but not in the birthing center) my second was even better at Methodist. I owe a lot of that to Park Slope Midwives, and of course, to the midwife who was on call, Jessie. My second birth was calm and really empowering - a breeze in comparison to my first. Jessie was my rockstar midwife at the birth, and she said all the right things at the right times to keep me focused and able to cope throughout. I had some anxiety about going natural again due to some tearing the first time around, and she managed to make me feel both welcome to pursue whatever choice I wanted and totally capable of doing it without medication with her as my coach. And she really served the role of OB and Doula all in one (I had both the first time around). I felt supported, understood and...well, as I said before, empowered. No other way to describe that feeling! The recovery was far easier to boot - I literally walked home from the hospital, and I walked nearly a mile round trip 2 days after the birth to pick up my son from school. All of the midwives were great, though some were warmer and fuzzier than others. All in all, though, I would really have been happy with any of them. There was one that was kind of new when I gave birth and I suppose I am glad to have not to have gotten her as we'd had almost no contact, but I'm sure she's capable as well. The one iffy bit is the front desk staff. They are kind of gruff, tough old Brooklyn "broads," if you know what I mean. They grow on you, but they were a bit rough around the edges :) Waiting times were somewhat unbearable for mid-day appointments, but I think they have now opened up more days for appointments overall, so that is likely better now too. Good luck, and congratulations!!

I loved the midwives - I worked with Jess and Roseanne was there when my baby was born and was fantastic - even though I had a scheduled c-section due to known complications. They can't do everything an OB can, but are with you all the way. They make sure you meet most of the midwives on scheduled visits so that if you don't end up with your primary midwife, you know the others. I think they are great and had a great experience at Methodist too.

I just had my 3rd with park Slope midwives and felt in good hands. Even though my appt. was always the the same day and time I saw a different midwife nearly every time (well, at the end I started seeing midwives I'd seen before), but they were all nice and knowledgable and very efficient. Hardly any wait and I actually liked the receptionist, she always remembered my and my older kids' names and was friendly (maybe I was memorable with all the kids and the dog!) You do have to go to Methodist for ultrasounds. They have an ultrasound in the office that they use for quick look see's but they don't do the full ultrasounds where they measure everything, I guess you need a tech and then a doctor to have a look. But Methodist was also efficient. My midwife Roseanne at birth was great (I think she's actually the owner), sadly I ended up having an emergency c section as well because my baby got herself stuck and tangled in the cord, but I felt that Roseanne tried everything she could before we had to give up. I was not a fan of the nurse staff on the recovery floor, but that is a different story...

I went with the Park Slope Midwives. Unfortunately I did end up having a c section but they did everything they could before making that call in fact I wanted one way before! I was at Methodist for such a long time that I saw 5 out of the 6 midwives. I love them all. Yes the receptionist is gruff but pay her no mine, she is uber busy and really very cute in a way. The midwives are great and will answer all your questions. It is a bigger outfit then most midwiferies so perhaps you get less of a personal connection but they are pros at delivering babies and in the end that is what I was most interested in. I totally recommend them. Hope this helps.

I loved them! It's true, they won't make your appt until the 12 wk mark, usually by then the heartbeat should be picked up on Doppler. They are very hands off, but you'll get all the critical tests you need (if you want them) at Methodist. You'll also get a scan around 20-22 wks if you wish. There are 4 or 5 midwives I think-they try to have you see everyone so you'll be more comfortable with delivery. I mostly saw Jesse, and Anne delivered both my girls, and she gives a killer back massage during labor!

For my annual check-up I use a midwife at Park Slope Midwives (on 9th St. & 8th Ave). I find them to be very personable and not rushed. They get a good health history & spend some time getting to know you. Midwives can do everything I need, including: write prescriptions; send me for a mammogram; do a PAP; and send for blood tests as needed. The one thing they can't do is a C-section, but since I don't plan on being pregnant again, this is not something I'm worried about. I see Jessica Goldberg there 718.499.3636. I don't think she delivers babies much, but focuses on "well-woman" care. June 2012

I am writing because I had a terrible experience at this practice. I cannot speak to the entire practice, only my experience with one provider, Jessica Goldman. While her demeanor was nice and she completed a good exam (about a year after the birth of my son), it was what followed that led me to write this negative review. I had a pap smear done at the visit, and was told that if I didn't hear anything back in a few weeks, then everything was normal (that was in September). In January, I received a call from Jessica saying that my pap smear was abnormal. The reason for the 4 month delay was that she had misplaced my chart....and it had just appeared with the note to call me about the results. Needless to say, I was upset and scared. I find it totally unacceptable that in this digital age that a medical professional would have no other back-up system for notifying patients of their results, other than a note clipped to a chart. Furthermore, her excuse was that the office was being painted, and my file fell behind a file cabinet. I was equally as shocked to learn that my personal medical information was sitting out in the open, for anyone nearby to see, and for painters to knock the file down. Following this alarming phone call, I immediately switched to an OB/GYN (Dr. John Maher), who I really like. I had to undergo a painful surgical procedure to ensure that everything was fine. I am thankful that the abnormal result was not cancerous, however I continue to question the professionalism of this medical practice given my experience. Please ask many questions before going here....and never again take "no news is good news" as the truth from your doctor.

Review Date: April 2012 REVIEW: I cannot say enough good things about the midwives. I never waited more than 30 minutes for my appointments -- usually it was maybe a 5-10minute wait. I only had one child so far, and was with Park Slope Midwives who were awesome from the very beginning and I highly recommend them. I had a regular pregnancy, but they were pretty frank with us all along, and in the hospital as well (in terms of what to expect, how it'll play out etc). When our son's heart rate was rapidly dropping, and after they exhausted all attempts of trying to get it up (he was pushed down violently by each contraction, the cord around his neck was getting tighter, and he was too high too push) - the OBGYN who was in the hospital had to do a C-section. I didn't meet the doctor before, but he was one of my midwives' backup docs. They were all watching the monitor and checking on me together while we had contractions, and once there was no other choice but to cut, the last thing i remember before falling asleep is that one of the midwives was actually holding my hand. It was very re-assuring. (My local anesthesia wasn't working fast enough, so they had to put me down completely). I want to attempt a VBAC with our next child, when time comes, and we'll do so with the same practice. I have a full trust in their backup docs if needed. (March 2012)

We found them to be really great. No nonsense, certainly not the hippie-dippie Spiritual Midwifery types, but we didn't particularly want or need that. I never waited all that long for prenatal visits, they returned phone calls promptly, and they just all seem like good Brooklyn women. For our delivery we ended up with Betsy and we have subsequently come to refer to her as the Drill Sergeant - *seriously* no nonsense, she yelled at me to get my act together and coached me very specifically and forcefully through torrential labor and 20 minutes of pushing. I don't think a sweet, gentle midwife would have done that, but I don't think I would have gotten the baby out any other way. This was our second kid and he came very fast. I would recommend if you're with them for your first child, definitely hire a doula to be with you for the longer part of labor.

If you want to stay in the neighborhood I would see Park Slope Midwives. Everyone I know who has worked with them had nice things to say. Their office is on 9th street between 7th & 8th and they deliver at Methodist. As for the hospital... your experience will really depend on what nurses are working and who your caregiver is. But it's like that pretty much wherever you go. You can have a great (or not so great) experience almost anywhere. The key is to be informed about your options, know what your preferences are & have a team that will support you the way you want to be supported. If the doctor or midwife practices in a way that makes you feel safe & well taken care of then you will probably have a good experience regardless of what building you are in. (Jan 2011)

Agreed on Park Slope Midwives. They're great, and they work with OBs for the tricky stuff. I started seeing them about six months before I got pregnant. I had an iffy Pap and they sent me to Dr John Maher for follow-ups. It turned out to be fine, but his first instincts were very non-invasive. During the pregnancy the midwives at PSM wre fantastic. The one inconvenient thing was that they sent me to Bay Ridge for ultrasounds, but that was OK (and I think if you insisted you could go to Methodist for them). During delivery I started running a high fever and my baby's heart rate shot up, so I had a C-section -- not what I had hoped for, obviously -- I went to them because I wanted a natural delivery too -- but the decision was obviously very considered. Methodist's C-section rates are insane, but I think PSM's are something like 8%, and the midwife (Anne Gudi) was clearly not enthusiastic about having to recommend that I have one. Once the decision was made, though, things went very quickly and smoothly -- Maya was born an hour later. Dr Maher was on call, and he seems to have done a good job -- I recovered more quickly than some friends who had difficult vaginal deliveries. And they were playing the Big Lebowski soundtrack while they prepped the OR, which kind of cracked my husband and me up. Good luck! (Jan 2011)
