• Review from the Fall 2021 Early Childhood Education Survey

  Type of facility: Pre-K Review: We are halfway through the school year at PS 889, where kiddo is in PreK. Overall we like the school - the teachers are warm and attentive, the community of parents seem involved and invested, it's fairly diverse as a school community - and there is a parent committee paying attention to issues of racial equity and social justice. I especially appreciate that our kiddo's teachers are supportive of our kiddo using they/them pronouns. We're glad to be there! What amenities does the facility provide? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals, (I am not sure about early morning hours, there may be!) What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I would like to note that the curriculum itself is fairly standard, and I wish there were ways that the attention to racial justice in the parent community could also push for a more politically progressive curriculum...but this would be long, slow work at the city level, I think! Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? Kiddos are masked in school all day, except to eat. They do a lot of handwashing and have learned a lot about the importance of it to limit germs.

  Type of facility: Pre-K Review: Although the year had a rocky start in terms of communication and clarity, our son is loving Pre-K at 889 and the teachers are wonderful so far. We are not allowed to go inside the building for health + safety protocols but from the virtual classroom orientation, the classrooms are very nice, new and clean looking and have lots of fun 'centers' that our son talks about at home. He is also clearly learning a lot and absorbing the information well, and has shown huge improvements in his counting and vocabulary/spoken expression since the start of the school year. We hope to continue on here at the school next year! What amenities does the facility provide? Improvement on school to parent communications Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? The school is very good about masks and the protocols are clear.

  It's a great program- my child loves the teachers, music and a theater program they have been running over the winter. The facilities are brand new, and the small size (compared to other schools) makes it feel personal.
