Our Mission

\

The Brooklyn New School, a Magnet School for Applied Learning, is a diverse learning community. Instruction is experiential and hands on with a standards based curriculum that also focuses on children’s individual needs and interests. Adults model life-long learning by engaging in ongoing professional development. The governance structure assures collaboration among parents, staff, and administration.

The Applied Learning Program enables students to problem solve and to effect change. They apply knowledge gained in school to real life situations. Students develop projects with teachers in and outside of the classroom.

BNS is governed by a coalition of parents and staff. Our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and SLT (School Leadership Team) meet monthly. These meetings are open to all members of the school community.

OUR VISION

At the Brooklyn New School and Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies, we envision a diverse and inclusive learning community of students and the adults who work with them, all engaged in thought, dialogue, and exploration. Through the use of a project-based inquiry curriculum, we help students become independent thinking human beings, who understand how to learn.  At each stage of learning, educators foster the development of young people’s voice and sense of personal and social responsibility.

Brooklyn New School is really a gem. It's doing something really special for children in NYC. This is our 3rd year there. My child is so happy to go to school everyday. The halls are filled with sounds of happy kids at work. Our website has a wealth of information https://www.bns146.org/ The teachers are truly amazing and love children. It's a child focused school and uses a play-based model for prek and K (they still learn with this model). It is not a traditional school and it uses project based learning and project based assessments. It has a really strong phonics and reading program. Seeing this model in action is inspiring and lot of parents become involved and some even teachers. Here is more information https://www.bns146.org/about-us
  • Review from the Spring 2023 Early Education Survey

Review: Amazing social-emotional curriculum giving students myriad opportunities to explore, think creatively, problem solve and have new and unusual experiences. Develops an intrinsic love of learning. Couldn’t have had a better experience. Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals, Afterschool pickups to other programs
  • Review from the Fall 2021 Early Childhood Education Survey

Type of facility: Pre-K Review: I was elated that my daughter got a spot at the Brooklyn New School, but we had a very strange and disappointing experience there which led to me withdrawing my daughter and placing her elsewhere. What amenities does the facility provide? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? There is very little structure for the Pre-K program which led to boundary-seeking behaviour. There is very little communication with parents - no regular updates or shared schedule. Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? The children wore masks and were mostly outside.
  • Review from the Fall 2021 Early Childhood Education Survey

Type of facility: Pre-K Review: Supportive, caring teachers & admin. So much outdoor time & a great outdoor space. Play-based, child-led learning environment. My child has continued into kindergarten and my daughter will eventually attend, so yes, I would choose BNS again. What amenities does the facility provide? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I wish my child spent more time drawing & tracing in preK. They seem to be spending sufficient time on this now that he’s in kindergarten. Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? Amazing communication!
  • Redshirting for Fall 2021

Have you looked into the Brooklyn New School? I don’t know about circumventing the red tape to place him a year back, but at BNS they are *very* willing to let boys (for some reason especially boys) repeat a year early on. I would say fully half of my older son’s friends repeated kindergarten, first, or second grade.
  • Kindergarten Recommendations BNS and The Carroll School

BNS is wonderful and my daughter is thriving, but I can see how it is not for everyone because it is child-centered and a bit less structure. There are so many wonderful amenities and arts programs though. Personally, I’m not interested in standardized testing in general and love that BNS kids don’t receive homework until late 1st grade. I’m not sure the no grade policy will work itself out when our daughter gets to middle school, but I guess we’ll see when the time comes.
  • Kindergarten Recommendations BNS and The Carroll School

We are also zoned for PS 58, but chose to send our daughter to Kindergarten at Brooklyn New School (she is in K there now). Since BNS is a lottery school, we put it #1 on our K ranking and were thrilled to get off the wait list in late June 2019. My daughter loves BNS and so far we are very happy.
  • Review from the 2018/2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey

The program is play-based and very simple. My daughter loves everything! Among her favorites are music class and the dance studio, and in the classroom she loves the "pretend" center for imaginative play. She greets all teachers with a hug and is making friends. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Provides meals What would you change? I wish the art program was stronger, specifically that there were easels in the classroom and opportunities to paint. I'd like more opportunities for parents to be included in the classroom. I'd like there to be walking trips in the neighborhood. (All based on my son's experience at K-280, which we loved and overall feels like a superior program.)
