VBAC providers
I recently had an unmedicated VBAC with Oula at Mount Sinai West, but started my pregnancy with Guirguis. I did a lot of research for my VBAC and landed at Oula and am so happy with the choice I made. Some of the midwives were a little more interventionist about things (one suggested a membrane sweep at 39 weeks which I declined, another recommended prophylactic baby aspirin use even though I didn't fit the criteria, also declined), but overall the midwives were super supportive about all of my wishes during the pregnancy and birth and the midwife who delivered my daughter (shout out to Meg Fendt) was incredibly laid back in a good way. She not only made me feel supported but strong and capable which is sometimes hard to get at the hospital. Also every visit I had prenatally was never rushed, and I felt like each midwife I met with really listened and cared about me and my experience. Very unlike my first experience even though I was with a midwife practice then too.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? May 2023 Review: We liked Oula a lot, with some caveats. The midwife who delivered our baby, Trixie, was AWESOME - I still get emotional thinking about the role she played in navigating a birth that had not been going to “plan” and ultimately delivering in confidence, power and positivity. We also liked our prenatal care, getting to meet all of the midwives at the practice and always feeling listened to and cared for, with modern support through their patient portal. Ultimately their model of collaborative care with the OBs at MSW proved to be more medicalized and limited than we’d anticipated. I also felt a little uncomfortable with how aggressive their marketing strategy is on social media, and the aestheticization of the whole experience.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? September 2022 Review: We had a mostly lovely experience with Oula. Overall we were happy, but there was some variability among the midwives with regards to approach - some I think have home birth experience and are a little less “medical” in some ways while others are more “medical”/ more similar to what you’d experience at a traditional OB. But generally they’re all lovely and open and good at listening!Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? December 2023 Review: I received great care and attention from every midwife at Oula. Although you may or may not see the same one twice prior to your birth, they try to make sure you are familiar with all of them. At birth, CNMs Katie and Trixie were with me throughout the 48 hours, and they were wonderful. Trixie in particular was a rockstar.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? December 2023 Review: Dr. Rodas and the Oula team were all incredibly supportive, kind, and caring throughout my pregnancy and during my birthing process. Dr. Rodas and the midwives worked hand in hand to make sure that my choices were respected and heard and that I was given great care.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? March 2023 Review: Oula was wonderful. They are a midwife practice with one OB on] staff. I went to their Brooklyn office.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? March 2023 Review: I couldn't have had a better experience than I did at Oula. The midwives were wonderful, especially Trixie, who delivered my baby and provided tremendous comfort and support, as well as expertise and guidance. I couldn't have asked for more.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? May 2022 Review: Exactly the care I wanted. My midwife advocated for me and made sure my birthing wishes were accommodated. I highly recommend Oula.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? May 2023 Review: Incredible care throughout - thoughtful, kind, and unhurried approach from each of their midwives. Couldn’t have felt more cared for or empowered.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? March 2023 Review: Prenatal care was pretty good. Though they were supportive and helpful in writing birth preferences/plans, there was a disconnect afterwards- to my knowledge my document was not reviewed until after I arrived at the hospital and we didn't discuss it towards the end of my pregnancy, which felt like a missed opportunity to better prepare. One of the reasons I switched to Oula was for a midwifery model of care, but I wasn't happy with the care we received during labor and delivery from two of the three midwives we interacted with- their attitudes did not align with Oula's brand/marketing/general vibe and I didn't feel supported. There also were many midwives I met there who were also wonderful! There was also some key decision-making upfront that was not handled well that led to some negative outcomes.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? September 2022 Review: Working with Oula was hands-down the best decision we made throughout the entire pregnancy, and the most compassionate medical care I've ever received. Truthfully I wish I could go to them as PCPs. Every appointment was as long as we needed, we got to meet every midwife in the practice so we knew who was going to show up at the birth, and they partner closely with doulas if that's something you're interested in. I had a very long labor and a rather complicated birth, and I'm convinced that the reason I didn't have a c-section and walked out of there with a healthy baby was because of my midwife's patience and competent care.Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? April 2023 Review: I absolutely loved working with the midwives at Oula. They were always interested in my preferences and how best to support me as a person. I felt supported and empowered all throughout my pregnancy and birth, even when things didn’t go as planned.Oula vs Park Slope Midwives vs OB-Gyn
I used Oula and delivered at Mt Sinai West, and cannot gush about them enough. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in medical care and more. Every appointment was kind, consent based, and completely unrushed - and the quality was super high too. I’m convinced the only reason I didn’t end up in an OR and walked out 30 hours later with a healthy baby was a patient midwife. Using a midwife and Oula specifically was hands-down the best decision we made, and we were super happy with their postpartum support too.Oula vs Park Slope Midwives vs OB-Gyn
I went with Oula and can't say enough about how wonderful it was to have them support my pregnancy. I looked forward to every appointment and am so grateful to have received such incredible care. Ultimately, going to MSM for delivery didn't feel like a big deal. It didn't actually take that long to get there and there was plenty of time (40 hrs lol) before baby arrived. I think you should prioritize the convenience and care of your appointments since you'll be spending far more time at the clinic than the hospital.OB-GYN or midwife practice in Manhattan delivering at Mount Sinai West?
I’ve had a great experience with Oula in Brooklyn and they’ve recently opened a Manhattan location downtown. Midwife centric model with OBs on staff. They deliver at Mount Sinai West and ultrasounds are at Mount Sinai.Advice on prioritizing experience vs. proximity for pregnancy care
I can’t necessarily speak to the distance issue (I was ~25 mins walking distance from my care and this was my first) but I used Oula in Brooklyn for prenatal care and delivered at Mt Sinai West last month. Literally everything about working with them was outstanding. It was the kindest, most compassionate medical care I’ve ever received, and they handled a very difficult labor and delivery with a super high level of competency that saved me from a vacuum and/or c section delivery and a post-delivery trip to the OR for a stuck placenta. I can’t recommend them enough, and personally would travel to use them again.Natural birth in NYC
Thirding the recommendation for Oula- really awesome care and a wonderful experience all around.Natural birth in NYC
Also had an outstanding experience and unmedicated delivery (also of my 2nd child) at Mount Sinai West with Oula midwives and a fantastic doula. Would highly recommend both.Natural birth in NYC
I had a very positive experience delivering at Mt Sinai West with the midwives at Oula (and doula support as well).Review from the Summer 2022 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? January 2022 Review: I was seen by the midwives at Oula for my pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey, and I highly recommend them! They took time to get to know me and my partner, to listen to our questions and concerns, to center our priorities, and to make sure we had all of the information to make informed decisions. They also offer a virtual weekly postpartum group, run by the wonderful Grace, a postpartum doula, and Ithamar, a registered nurse, and I really valued that time to ask questions, learn from other parents, and see that I wasn’t alone in what I was experiencing.Review from the Summer 2022 Birthing Survey
What month and year was your child born? July, 2022 Review: I switched to Oula from an Ob practice at 20 weeks and am soooo glad I did. The midwives at Oula were so responsive and respectful of what was important to me- it was honestly one of the best healthcare experiences I’ve had. As my husband said, with our first child (delivered with an ob) it felt like everything was being done to us while with our second (delivered with Oula) it felt like we were active participants in the process.ISO Gynecologist that accepts Emblem Health
Love Oula but I’m not sure if they do gyn stuff or just babies and postpartum? Worth looking into for sure! They have a couple of offices but I go to the Brooklym Heights one.OB/hospital recs
When I switched to Oula it was really eye-opening to have midwives who took the time to explain things and cared about my preferences. It was night and day how much more positive I felt about my last pregnancy / birth. My midwife was present for much of my labor (vs my Downtown OBs who came in only at the end) and was very knowledgeable about alternatives to medical interventions (e.g. pumping to induce labor - worked for me!). I know Oula isn't on your list but these might be things to ask about as you look into different practices.Birth Experience
I switched to Oula around 22 weeks and have been really happy so far (I’m now 33 weeks). I haven’t given birth yet but I’ve really appreciated how much more patient centric they are and really feel like they’ve taken the time to talk to me about what I’m looking for and answer all my questions.Oula Health for maternity care / Mt. Sinai west delivery - seeking to hear your experiences
I switched my prenatal care to Oula from NYP Lower Manhattan’s OB practice after feeling disappointed by the impersonality of that practice and learning more about the midwife led model of care. Oula definitely takes a more personal approach, and I’ve felt very listened to and supported during my visits so far which was so important to me as a first time parent.Oula Health for maternity care / Mt. Sinai west delivery - seeking to hear your experiences
I just delivered my second two weeks ago, and was with Oula for all of my care for this pregnancy. Simply put, I found them to be absolutely outstanding and such a refreshing and patient centric experience! Every midwife in the practice is warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares. I am going to be sad to not be returning again after my postpartum visit! We also had a good experience at Mount Sinai West with Oula and our doula (we had delivered at NYU last time and didn’t find there to be significant differences between the two). We were told ahead of time that Mount Sinai West is typically provider specific in terms of your experience, and that seemed to hold true for us. I would say that if you are looking for a midwife practice you need look no further! They also have great technology integration in their patient portal that is really nice and convenient as well. One thing to be aware of with Oula is that they don’t do your sonograms in their BK heights office, so you have to go to a separate facility in Manhattan for those when they are needed. That said, Oula only recommends/requires 3 sonograms during the first 40 weeks (unless you prefer more or have a special circumstance), so it isn’t like you’re having to make that trek super often. I believe Oula is also doing open houses periodically for interested patients to come in and learn about their approach and care, so you could always look into that also if you wanted more info! Please feel free to reach out directly if you’d like as well. I had a wonderful experience with Oula and would both recommend them and use them again in a heartbeat!Oula Health for maternity care / Mt. Sinai west delivery - seeking to hear your experiences
I had my daughter on Jan 23rd and delivered with the Oula midwives at Mount Sinai West, and I am so happy I chose Oula for my prenatal, birth and postpartum journey. Mine was also an IVF pregnancy and I went to Oula beginning at 10 weeks. I was looking for care providers that didn’t rush through the appointments, cared about my full physical and mental health and wellbeing, and supported me and my husband to be informed and empowered in our decision making, and the Oula team 100% checked all those boxes. I also ended up needing to have an unplanned C-section, and the midwife made sure we had all the information to make decisions we were comfortable with and feel secure that we were doing what was best for mine and my daughter’s health. I can’t recommend Oula enough; they’re honestly what I wish all healthcare was like! I also was overall very happy with the care I received from the rest of the nurses, etc. at Mount Sinai West. I stayed in a private postpartum room in the new Maternity Unit and that was great (I’m still unsure how they’re handling things if it’s really busy, but it seemed like they will try to put you in a single room if they’re available because of Covid). To sum up, I wholeheartedly recommend Oula!Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey
Oula is a midwifery group; instead of having care with one specific midwife, you meet the different midwives in the group and give birth with whichever one is on shift at the time. I spent the beginning stages of induction with Nicole and was in active labor with Katie. The birth experience was the best part of my experience with Oula, I felt like I was in very capable hands. Throughout my pregnancy I really enjoyed my care there. The offices are beautiful, the location is great and encouraged me to sneak in quick trips to the Brooklyn promenade. Everyone is really kind and helpful. However, they are still a start up and have some kinks to work out. There would be times where one person would advise that I book the next visit as virtual, and then a midwife would ask me why I booked a virtual visit - that it should have been in person. That kind of thing bugs me because I just want to do what I'm supposed to but it's hard to know when you're being told different things. Despite those more administrative hiccups, I still would choose to go back there again.Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey
I can’t recommend Oula as a practice highly enough. They are a collaborative team of ObGyns, midwives, nurses and postpartum doulas working together to provide holistic, supportive and evidence-based maternity care to all birthing persons. They are a new practice, having opened in Feb 2021. I switched over to them early in my pregnancy and am so glad I did. From the moment I entered their care, I felt empowered to have the birth experience of my choice while being guided and informed every step of the way. They deliver at Mount Sinai West and have a practice in Brooklyn Heights, with another to come in Manhattan. Their approach is to educate and inform the patient, then support them in whatever birth experience they choose to have (medicated or not, doula-assisted or not). Everyone on the team was incredibly warm and caring. They lean towards low intervention, but may advise a patient to consider induction or scheduled c-sections if medically necessary. One downside was that, being a smaller practice, ultrasounds are performed offsite at partner locations, but I felt that the the level of attention and personalized care I received at each visit was worth it. Midwife: Katie Spiegler I trusted Katie from Oula fully and was so grateful she delivered out baby. Her expertise and calm, strong presence helped make the birth a very positive experience.
