Anyone deliver at NYU & can recommend a great OB?
Midtown OB/GYN, specifically Dr Anzai and Dr Benedetto, got me through 2 births, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. They took me after my initial practice kicked me out for asking too many questions (yes that actually happened) even though I was 23 weeks, when most OBs will not take you. They were never fazed by my questions and I trusted them so much. I am sure my first would have been a c section if not for Dr Anzai’s skill with forceps. Although he was not on call when it was time for me to deliver during my second birth, he came and did it anyway as he knew I wanted him to be there.Review submitted via the PSP Birth Survey
Great. Care was excellent. Nurses in particular were caring and helpful. I felt supported and confident in the care we received. Recovery rooms on mother baby floor are pretty loud--not so great for sleeping. It's baby friendly, meaning rooming in is encouraged. Do not hesitate to send the baby to the nursery so you can nap! NYU is the best! Based on November 2016 birth experienceReview submitted via the PSP Birth Survey
They were excellent, but failed to account for my gluten allergy (celiac), so I got wheat products as a meal twice. Based on 12/2016 birth experienceReview submitted via the PSP Birth Survey

We wanted to deliver at NYU because of their reputation and baby-first practices. Everything I heard/read was true. The baby never left my side during my entire stay there and all of the nurses and doctors were supportive of my birth plan (delayed cord clamping, immediate skin to skin, having a doula, no episiotomy, avoiding c-section and interventions if possible). I also felt good about having a top notch NICU in the same location (thank goodness did not end up needing it). Dr. Lau was on call when I delivered and she was such a cheerleader and a great coach. Could not have asked for a more supportive doctor in the delivery room. Nurses were top notch - only one of the many that I encountered was just ok, and she was completely competent just had a cool bedside manner. All of the nurses were responsive, patient, knowledgeable, and very generous with their time. They have a system where you can call your nurse directly when you need something, and we used it a ton and were always pleased with response time. There is a lactation consultant that makes the rounds, and a separate 'latch hour' class that is offered to all moms daily, right in the nursery area. Everyone there was pro-breastfeeding. Food was pretty decent - you choose what you want from a menu and as long as it all fits on one tray you can order as much as you want. My partner and I both ate the hospital food for a few meals, especially the first day when we were going on zero sleep and figuring out how to deal with a newborn - no time to think about going out to get food! The only problem was the very first meal they brought us, since we missed meal ordering time they just brought me food - it was chicken and I'm a vegetarian. No one asked our preference so if you have dietary restrictions make it known! Recovery rooms are cramped! Private rooms cost $500 a night and are hard to come by. There is a recliner for partners to use for overnight stays. We got lucky and had a shared room but no roommate so it was nice to not have to share a bathroom or have a second baby in the room with us (let alone more guests, more doctors and nurses coming in to check up on you, etc.) We went home with a ton of diapers, wipes, pads, ice packs, nursing pads, etc etc. You can take everything that is in the room (it all gets thrown out if you don't), and nurses will happily give you extras of whatever you ask for. I loved NYU. I had an amazing experience and LOVED all of the nurses. They took such good care of my baby girl and me. The lactation consultants there were also very helpful, and have a hotline (called the warplane) you can call any time to leave a message for an LC, who calls back within 24 hours, although I never waited more that 1 hour. We didn't spring for the private room and the space was a bit tight, but we made due. Based on July 2016 birth experienceReview submitted via the 2016 Birth Survey
Recommend? Recommend with reservations Review: We had planned to have a home birth but I chose to transfer to NYU after 36 hours of labor. We had some issues with the on call OBGYN but most of the rest of the staff was pleasant, kind, an welcoming. NYU claims to be a "baby friendly" and "breastfeeding friendly" hospital and, while I generally found this to be true, you do still have to do your research and know your stuff to advocate effectively for yourself and your newborn. Be very specific about what you do and do not want and make sure you pay attention to ensure the staff follows through on those things you agreed upon. Our labor and delivery nurse was wonderful and our nurse for post-partum care was even better. NYU is a teaching hospital so there are plenty of residents around. Those who were involved in our care were knowledgable and kind and I had no problem with them being in the room for our birth. My only issue was a resident (incorrectly) insisting that laying our your back to push "allows gravity to do the work". Lactation consultants are available post-partum but I found them to be lacking in knowledge and not very helpful. The rooms in the mother and baby wing are fine but the shared rooms are very cramped, especially the side nearest the door. If you hope to get any sleep whatsoever after the birth, try to get a private room or at least the window side of the shared rooms. Advice: Even though NYU is one of the better hospitals in NYC for mother and baby care, it is still a hospital and, as such, the staff are not necessarily knowledgable about natural or holistic baby care. If you lean towards the "crunchy" side whatsoever, do your homework and be prepared to kindly advocate for what you want. Member notes about insurance: Yes they take insurance. I had some issues with insurance but it wasn't really NYU's fault. Based on a December 2015 birthing experienceReview submitted via the 2016 Birth Survey
Recommend? Recommend with reservations Review: NYU is a very busy hospital. We went in for a scheduled induction and had to wait about 6 hours beyond our scheduled time to get into a room and get started. Despite the wait, we had a positive experience with labor and delivery. The nurses were all wonderful, as was the team who administered my epidural. The delivery room was spacious and comfortable. The recovery room, however, was awful. The room was tiny and we had to share with someone else. It felt small before we got our roommate and then with another mom and baby in there it was unbearable. We left one day early due to the discomfort. Despite that fact, I had a good experience at NYU overall - mostly due to the nursing staff. Advice: Be prepared for very small recovery rooms. Member notes about insurance: No insurance issues with UHC Based on a January 2016 birthing experienceReview submitted via the 2016 Birth Survey
Recommend? Highly recommend Review: Everyone was great. Nurses, doctors, anethsologist, pain management, etc Advice: Don't overpack. You don't need much from home except toothbrush, lip balm, and bra. Plus clothes for you and baby to go home. I would suggest "taking" one of the big bed pads they have under you in bed. Another Mom told me to "take" one home and I am eternally grateful for that tip. Also, the waist binder I got for free at hospital was 100% better than one I paid $40 at Maternity store Member notes about insurance: Easy Based on a February 2016 birthing experienceReview submitted via the 2016 Birth Survey
Recommend? Highly recommend Review: I liked delivering at NYU. The nurses and other staff on the labor and delivery unit were terrific! I didn't find the lactation consultants helpful at all and actually found them condescending so I guess that would be my main complaint about this hospital. Member notes about insurance: Yes, they take insurance. Again no issues to speak of. Based on a march 2016 birthing experienceReview submitted via the 2016 Birth Survey
Recommend? Highly recommend Review: NYU was great, I found them very responsive, nurses are fabulous. Wish there were more single rooms though, I was not able to get one although I was on the list. Food was surprisingly good too! Advice: Member notes about insurance: Yes, they took my insurance, everything went smoothly. Based on a January 2016 birthing experience(no subject)
