  • NYU Dentistry--student program experiences? (As patient!)

I went as a patient and had a pretty good experience - the care was thorough and competent, the cost was relatively low, but it did take a long time and if you're a new patient, you have to go twice. The first appointment is just for information and x-rays, and then they do the cleaning in the second appointment. I should note that I have no fear of the dentist, and I happened to get students with a good bedside manner. However, my husband needed a root canal, doesn't like going to the dentist in the first place, and got a student with a not great bedside manner. It was a disaster. He ended up going somewhere else to finish the work. In a nutshell, if you don't mind the dentist and think the extra time you'll spend is worth the savings, it's a good deal for good dentistry. But for someone who has white coat syndrome or not a lot of time to spare, probably better to pay a little more elsewhere.

I did a ton of dental work there after college and I would not recommend it. The work itself was fine, but I was told later by another dentist that they drilled things that didn't need to be done. Also - it was SUPER painful and the bedside manner was terrible. I would be sitting with mouth open and stuff in it waiting to be cleared by a teacher for what felt like too long. Also - each appointment took forever. Having come only from my hometown childhood dentist before that, I've had a lot of dentist PTSD since then and dread going and require extra over the top numbing. The price is totally good but knowing what I do now, if I had to go back to NYU again for financial reasons, I would be very clear about what I need from the student and speak up if things are not feeling right.

I had a good experience there a few years ago when I was underemployed and uninsured getting a crown. The student I had was actually a full dentist from another country who was taking some classes to meet requirements to transfer her credentials to the U.S. so it was like seeing a regular dentist. Each appointment was sort of slow though because we would have to wait for her teacher to come check her work and he would get backed up. Also it was kind of a pain in the neck to get to, but I think the whole thing cost me a fraction of the normal cost, something like $250 total.

I went to the NYU school of dentistry as a kid until one time I needed a cavity filled and the student filled it, made a mistake, removed it, filled it, and so on three times until my dad lost it and demanded the head of the program come and fill my cavity. We never went back. As an adult I decided it was worth a second chance but unfortunately had another bad experience. I wanted a simple cleaning and “check up” but the first visit is diagnostic, which wasn’t made clear to me. You have to schedule a second appointment for a cleaning and to address whatever issues they find (so it’s time consuming, and not free, I think it was $75, perhaps per appointment). The student also scared me like hell by telling me that to do all the work I needed to get done it would cost me $3,000. The student had no bedside manner, so wasn’t very helpful when I was distressed by her assessment. In the end I didn’t return, went to a non student dentist, got my cleaning and got a second opinion, and it was about the same price as the student (without the extra $3000). In the end I decided it was not actually an affordable option, especially if you just want a cleaning and are not in need of anything major. I personally have decided to stop giving them a chance, but that said I may have just gotten two duds and I’m sure there are very talented future dentists there.

I had a pretty terrible experience there with a root canal that took months to address, turned into needing a crown lengthening, then they never followed up on scheduling the next step, and ultimately I had to have the tooth extracted. Totally possible I just had a bad student, but it was a nightmare (especially now that I've had other root canals and know how simple the process can be). I had some cavities filled there as well, which all went fine - but anything more (which is often the more expensive stuff), I can't recommend.

When I was a student I used the program a lot. I had nothing but great experiences. Except for one time. I went to a normal appointment and had a minor cavity. The student asked me if I could come back on the weekend, because my cavity would be PERFECT for his exam, plus he would pay me and cover a car service. I went to the appointment, and the poor guy was so clearly nervous he definitely made some mistakes with the filling. The professor came by, examined the work and then promptly failed the student! The student was so distraught that he couldn't go on. I had to go back a few days later to the faculty practice for it to be fixed. Obviously, a rare occurrence, and again, I had nothing but good work otherwise. And, if things do go wrong, the professors will fix it.
  • ISO: dental care no/low fee

I'm answering from the nyu dental school clinic on 23rd and 1st Ave, where my child is squirming in the chair. This is our current way of coping with our kids' crummy dental insurance. I am not sure on what terms they treat adults, but it should be cheap if not free. The residents have finished school and are doing supervised work. The biggest drawback for us so far is that it can be slow. Worth looking up?
