Recent home birth experience with Andrea Diamond?
I also had a perfect home birth experience with Shar and Carol and the whole team at Midwifery Care NYC. It was my second home birth, and the first one, with a different midwife, was a disaster in comparison.Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey
My husband and I hit it off with Carol and Shar from the first time we met them, in a Manhattan cafe. They are down to earth, even a little salty!, extensively educated, deeply experienced, and have devoted their careers to helping mothers take back control of their birthing experience in a safe and ultra-supported environment. One of the biggest perks of switching to midwife care during my pregnancy was the home visits for check-ups!!! No commuting to a crowded ob/gyn office when I was pregnant in the sweltering NYC summer. But really, a more important perk was the TIME that Shar and Carol spent with me during every visit. None of the modern-day doctor stuff where they see you for 10 minutes and you have to have all your questions ready to fire in an instant. We had long visits where we really got to know one another and I could discuss every question that had ever crossed my mind about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care. That familiarity was wonderful to have during the birth as well. Shar was on call when I went into labor, so she was the one to deliver my daughter. We had built up good mutual trust and I felt like she knew how to guide me through the process better as a result. The only downside of going with a midwife and a home birth for us, versus a regular ob/gyn and a hospital, was that it actually cost MORE to do it this way—despite the much lower actual cost. This is because insurance companies and hospitals are in cahoots to make maximum money and want to de-incentivize home birth, even though it is an empowering, safe, healthy choice for many people. I want to help change this dynamic so that others in the future don't have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket, like we did, for the privilege of giving birth in their own homes. That said, I believe that Carol and Shar offer their services on a sliding scale, and I know that they are working to open NYC's first nonprofit birthing center, called The Haven Midwifery Birthing Center.Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey
a million stars. I felt safe, supported, empowered, in control, well cared for, 100% of the time.
