  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

Each birthing person automatically gets their own private room and bathroom. The hospital did set me up to fail because I stayed there Friday-Sunday and the staff lactation counselors don't work on weekends. None of the nurses on staff were lactation counselors, either. Anything you advise people to do (or not do) at this hospital/birthing center? Bring your own pillows. Don't give birth over the weekend because there are no lactation counselors there during that time.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I had an extremely difficult birth complicated by a partial placental abruption- I cannot say enough good things about the care I received from the nurses to the attendings. I really did not want to have a c section and they did everything that was safely in their power to respect my wishes and after a 50 hour induction I was able to get my wish. Our baby also had an infection at birth and the care she received in the NICU was equally as great. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure all of our questions were answered every day. One thing I will note though is it is a teaching hospital and the students and residents are actively involved- if this is something you are not comfortable with this would not be the right hospital for you.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

Dr. Mays @ Metropolitan Hospital- he was the person who ultimately delivered my baby. He listened to what I wanted and did everything in his power to come as close to the labor and delivery I wanted. He performed a last minute ECV and at the end of it all he also agreed to perform a last minute (very unplanned) vaginal breech birth.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I ended up as a Hospital Transfer from a homebirth at Metropolitan. The midwives, nurses and head of Obsetrics were all phenomenal. They were kind and extremely respectful of my wishes. For example, once I said I didn't want an epidural they were respectful of that and didn't mention it again. The midwives gave me a great deal of comfort and were clearly knowledgable. The nurses were all fantastic, they listened when I needed and were extremely responsive. The Dr who ultimately ended up delivering my baby, was fantastic and had a great bedside manner (I literally met him less than 24 hours before delivery). The recovery rooms were all private and the recovery nurses were lovely. My complaints were mostly those things that arise from being in a hospital, being bothered every 2 hours to have vitals checked etc. Also there are MANY residents in the hospital, so if you are uncomfortable with a teaching hospital and people learning from your experience you may not want to go there. Covid Related- My spouse and doula were both allowed in for the entire duration of labor and delivery. My spouse was allowed to stay in recovery after providing a print out of Cuomo's order that spouses were to be allowed to stay in recovery.
  • Recommendations needed for Birthing Hospitals

I’ve also heard good things about labor and delivery at Metropolitan Hospital, which is run largely by a midwifery practice, but I think they are limited in the types of insurance they take so you'd want to check about that first. Also, it's a bit far from Brooklyn if you're concerned about a long car ride.
  • Help! Park Slope Midwives v. Brooklyn Birthing Center v. ???

I originally visited Brooklyn Birthing Center and was supposed to deliver with LoMa (they closed at my 38th week pregnant, it was a nightmare) and eventually went with Village Maternity and delivered at Metropolitan Hospital. It was a totally weird choice since the hospital is on 99th and the FDR, but I spoke to a lot of doulas who told me it was a gem. The entire L&D is run by the midwives and my doula was so impressed by the experience she is delivering there too! Just a couple things, everyone gets private rooms, no visiting hours (people can come and go as they please and partner can stay), no nursery (baby is with you the whole time). I was one of 2 people delivering there so the attention I got was amazing. There is wireless monitoring, the laughing gas for labor. I had some complications so I ended up with intervention during labor and after but my doula assured me that if I was at any other hospital I would have been forced into a c-section because of my situation. She was shocked they were so accommodating, but careful. The hospital is not new and shiny (but neither is Brooklyn Birthing Center), I just felt very cared for and they are very low intervention. If you are up for the trek I’d be happy to answer any other questions!
