  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

Lea helped us after our son had his tongue tie revised. Her advice was way better than the lactation consultant we saw in the hospital.
  • Virtual lactation consultant?

I highly recommend Lea Rivera https://www.empirelactation.com/ I did in person visits with her postpartum and she was amazing, and I know she is doing virtual visits now. She’s an IBCLC.
  • Fees for lactation consultants?

We had a great experience with IBLC Lea Rivera using Aetna insurance. It was completely free (well, covered by insurance - she dealt with all the paperwork so we didn’t even have to submit anything). I think we had 2-3 at home visits plus text and phone follow-ups. Highly recommend her but I’d also recommend seeing who is covered by insurance if you don’t have Aetna. https://www.empirelactation.com/
  • Home visit LCs who take Aetna

I loved Lea Rivera and her colleague Julia. She made me feel much more confident and helped me address several issues. I’ve followed up with her a bunch since our initial appointment and she’s continued to give me support via text and over the phone. I was so happy to have found her. https://www.empirelactation.com/

I don't recommend. She suggested tongue tie surgery which we didn't do.

Lea Rivera and Julia Fuller-King Lea came to my house the day after I got discharged from the hospital. Her associate, Julia came a few days later. Both were tremendously helpful in answering my questions about lactation as a first time mom. I was having a hard time getting my baby to get a good latch and both consultants helped me through that. They also helped me put together a pumping and feeding schedule, helped me use my pump and have me general guidance for additional nutrition. Based on a October, 2017 birthing experience.

Came to my home on short notice and quickly and accurately diagnosed the problem I was having which made a huge difference. Bills aetna directly, hooray! Based on April 2017 birthing experience

Lea was recommended to me by Nahyra (sp?) at NYP LoMa because she takes Aetna. I really liked her and trusted her assessments and do believe she helped us get to a good place with breastfeeding. Her recipe for a homemade cream to protect against fungal infection also may have worked. She's best scheduled over text and may occasionally not respond but would if you try her again. The combination of house calls and her being insurance-covered was pretty great. Based on January 2017 birth experience

Lea was very knowledgeable but her communication and follow up via email was terrible. I met for a second apt (after trying for weeks to reach her via email) with one of the women she employs I believe (Julia Fuller-king) and she was AMAZING!!!! Based on June 2016 birthing experience

Lea came the week I gave birth to my first baby to weigh her and assist me with latching. She was good but very expensive. When I called her to get follow up advice I felt that she was kind of short with me and wasn't very helpful. As a new mom dealing with breastfeeding issues I was pretty disappointed. Lea was very helpful and met with me before the baby was born and provided invaluable advice about getting my supply up as soon as the baby was born, as I had some supply issues with my first child. She helped me through issues with jaundice and painful latch at the beginning, which allowed me to successfully exclusive breastfeed. She was acecssible and made home visits, which I really appreciated. But now that I'm back at work and having trouble with pumping enough milk, I can't reach her! Member notes about insurance: She takes Aetna and I haven't had to pay anything out of pocket (yet). Based on a January 2016 birthing experience

Member Review: Lea is an amazing lactation consultant. She worked with me and my son for a month, until he finally was nursing like a champ. I am very happy I had her help. She is a mother of two, and is kind and caring. She was not super reliable in terms of timing (of Insurance details: Not covered by insurance. (Review submitted via the 2014 Birthing Survey)

Member Review: I saw Lea when I was getting ready to go back to work. I'd been exclusively breastfeeding and was clueless about pumping, storing, bottles, how much, etc... and a bunch of other random questions. Plus I'd been having pain in one breast that wasn't resolvi Insurance details: Completely covered by insurance. (Review submitted via the 2014 Birthing Survey)

Member Review: Lea is both a Doula and a lactation consultant. I had issues with nursing after the baby was born, and Lea stuck with me until he was nursing like a champ. Because of her help we are still nursing past his first birthday. She was a fine Doula, gave us some tips of massage and advice on how to relieve some pain during childbirth. However, we had complications in our delivery, and I believe that Lea did not have a lot of experience with such situations, and gave us less than good advice. She did stay by my side the whole time, and I was very happy to have her. Next time, I may go with a Doula with a bit more experience. Insurance details: No. I tried to get reimbursed for the lactation consultation services, but I had a large deducible in my insurance and did not end up getting anything. While Lea was perfectly nice when I met with her, her follow up was terrible. She didn't return my phone call at a time of real need and while she emailed an apology the following week, she never called back and ignored my subsequent email questions to her. So I was very disappointed. I was desperate for help.

  • Birth Survey 2012

Review Date: April 2012 REVIEW: LOVED her. She's affordable and wonderful and loving and very available over email.
  • Birth Survey 2012

Review Date: April 2012 REVIEW: Fantastic! Correctly identified my baby's tongue tie and directed us to proper treatment. She offered prompt next day home visits when all seemed hopeless with my baby's latch. Her only agenda seemed to be helping us get the help we needed. INSURANCE ISSUES: No, but offers a sliding scale and receipts to submit. I found her rates very reasonable.
