Review: We simply couldn't be happier with K280's 3K program. Our daughter LOVED going to school each day-- for such a large school they somehow make the experience feel intimate and small. All the teachers and administrators know all the kids' names, and are constantly giving them new experiences as they learn about the lifecycle of butterflies, types clothing from all over the world, how to measure the circumference of objects, and more. Perhaps most wonderfully, the school offers an incredible variety of subjects and teachers via their "cluster classes" in science, art, music, library, and gym, plus additional classes in Spanish, yoga, and learning about other countries in the after-school program. The after-school program is run by the same teachers and administrators, so there's great consistency in the day for the kids. The school also regularly brings in performers and educators to teach the kids about Lunar New Year, Holi, Black History Month, scientific subjects, and so much more. Parents are invited to visit the classrooms regularly and experience the school too. Altogether it's an amazing and diverse community of families, teachers, and school administrators who clearly care deeply about every single kid. We're thrilled to be returning to K280 for PreK. Highly recommend! Review: We’ve had a great experience! My kid loved going to school. The teachers are all wonderful. My daughter loves her music, art, and science teacher, along with her classroom teacher and para. The school is clean. The curriculum is fruitful. What’s nice is everyone there is focused on early childhood education which shows in how the building is set up, lessons are taught, and how staff interact wiht kids. She is learning kindergarten readiness skills mixed in with a ton of play and social/emotional learning. I loved that they incorporated “journeys” into the day (a walk in the neighborhood) but it didn’t happen as often as listed on the schedule which was disappointing. The site coordinator, Sandy is a true advocate for kids and a wonderful resource. There is some disorganization about being informed of dates for big events which was frustrating at times. Kids Orbit after school program was amazing as well! Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals, Afterschool pickups to other programs What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? What I listed above about them being more consistent with taking the kids out on weekly walks in the neighborhood.Review from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey
REVIEW: Large program with the benefit of resources - huge classrooms filled with engaging toys and activities, specialized cluster teachers and classrooms (art, music, library, science, movement / gym), big playground and lots of options for outdoor space, auditorium for shows (lunar new year lion dance, etc). They're able to create small community feel within a big school with very engaged teachers and staff, and sharing occasional resources with PS10 is a bonus. My kiddo loves the variety and has learned so much from 3K and we're happily staying for Pre-K. Others described it as a utopia for 3 and 4 year olds and they weren't wrong - we feel spoiled from having all this available at such a young age!; Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals; What would you change? Has shifted to the DOE-mandated curriculum which can seem a bit limiting but teachers do a good job of making it their own and building in learning more directed by the childrenReview from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey
REVIEW: K280 has been a great school for us. While the building is large and a bit intimidating at first, the teachers make it a really cosy environment for the kids. The kids get exposed to traveling to their specialty classes (art, PE, music, and library) just like they will in elementary school, so that's especially nice for the Kindergarten transition. The teachers and staff very clearly care about the kids and the work they're doing.; Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals, Afterschool pickups to other programs; What would you change? It's a little confusing that the 3K and Pre-K afterschool options are different, but I think both are well run.Review from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey

REVIEW: Great program for 3k, lots of activities during the day - gym class, music, art, library, science. Option to get food provided by school or send lunch from home. Have to send 2 snacks for the whole day, one for morning one for afternoon. Nap time available although a bit early. Afterschool program available and very good. Teachers know children by name, although a big school, has a small feeling.; Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals;Review from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey
REVIEW: Overall it’s been a great experience. Our kid is usually happy to go to school and the teachers have been warm, patient, and seem to truly love their work. We love the “cluster” classes like library, art, gym, music, and science. Great to have a very affordable afterschool program onsite. Although the program is huge (12 3K and 12 pre-K classes), the kids stay within their small group (15 kids per 3K class, 18 per pre-K) and move to their cluster classes with that group plus their regular classroom teachers. The school has a real community feel and it’s nice to run into people throughout the neighborhood who all go to K280. The principal and assistant principal are very communicative. Two things we’ve disliked: there is way more screen time than we’re comfortable with (e.g., “watching” books being read aloud on YouTube instead of teachers reading actual books; kids watching TV every day at lunch), and there isn’t as much outside time as we’d like. Still, we’re sending our kid there in the fall for pre-K and overall we’re happy there.; Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals, Afterschool pickups to other programs; What would you change? Way less screen time, more outside timeReview from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey

Review: K280 is a big school but that comes with benefits of making lots of new friends. While it is not as organized as private programs such as Beansprouts (we did 3k there), it is free. We took the bus down either b67 or b61 and the commute was not as bad as we thought. My son had a great time. My kid has been in the afterschool program for 3K at K280 all year, M-F. He absolutely loves it. I should note that the program went through some management changes halfway through the year - the first half of the year was pretty chaotic, and we're much much happier with how it's going now. I hope they stay on this same track. It's a pretty low-key afterschool program, mostly play (with plenty of indoor facilities), some arts & crafts and some sports activities. My kid loves his afterschool caretakers, and they clearly love him - we get reports from them at pickup time (the reports are brief, but still illustrative), and he talks about his caretakers at home all the time. I'd highly recommend it.Review from the Spring 2022 Early Childhood Education Survey
Location: South slope Type of facility: 3K Review: The 3K program was amazing! There were many hiccups with registration (we waited on line for about 4 hours the first day, only to resubmit forms we had already sent in), and we had a change-up in our teacher in the third week (original teacher resigned), and it was STILL amazing with all that. Our kid had a wonderful classroom team that were supper attentive, communicative, and warm. Our kid learned a ton and made amazing friendships. We all loved it. 10/10 recommend What amenities does the facility have? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything? It’s kind of a bummer it’s by a highway but all the staff are super careful about crossing streets and it sadness a huge issue in the end.Review from the Spring 2022 Early Childhood Education Survey
Location: 500 19th Street Type of facility: Pre-K Review: This was my child's first full-time school experience, and she loved it. Her teacher took her class outside every day, often twice a day. Her teachers were caring and communicative, and her class was small (15 students). We celebrated lots of birthday parties on the weekends with other families in her class, so as a parent, I got to know the other parents in her class as well, which made for a really lovely class experience as a family. I especially loved the walk to and from school every morning and afternoon because of how excited the kids would be, and it was nice knowing and seeing people we know in the neighborhood also going to and from the school. It was a really happy first school experience for my daughter and whole family :) What amenities does the facility have? Location: 19th str Type of facility: Pre-K Review: This is the best experience so far. I've had two kids and we have tried multiple Pre-Ks, this one is great. The teachers are loving and affectionate but at the same time have a very good handle on managing the classroom, parents and the needs of each kid individually. What amenities does the facility have? Location: Bishop Ford High school Type of facility: Pre-K Review: My child had a great experience at 280. He made friends, had fun, learned new things, had wonderful enrichment program, and a great after school program A Playdate Every Day. He said he was so sad on the last day of school. I would absolutely send my child there again. What amenities does the facility have? Location: 500 19th Street Type of facility: Pre-K Review: We have been super happy with K280. Our daughter absolutely loved it! For most of the year there have been 2 teachers and a student teacher with the class of 17 kids. They go outside everyday and also have 1-2 nature days where they go on journeys to Prospect Park for the morning. The cluster classes are great (art, music, science, gym and library). Our daughter has learned a great deal, but mostly how to play with other children, how to respect other’s boundaries and overall how to be a caring human. We couldn’t be happier about our decision to send her to K280. What amenities does the facility have? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals Is there anything you would like to add about how the school is handling the pandemic? School has handled virtual school, mask compliance etc well.Review from the Spring 2022 Early Childhood Education Survey

Location: 500 19th St, Brooklyn, NY 1121 Type of facility: Pre-K Review: We really loved sending our child to K280. We were concerned about how big of a school it is, for such young kids. But it actually gives the kids quite a wonderful experience in that they have more programs available to them. They have cluster classes of Science, Music, Art, Gym and Library and the school brings in many performances for them, as well. We also got to participate in many events like Carnivals, Heritage Day, etc. We really loved our teacher and felt she cared for the students like they were her own. They had a lot of fun activities throughout the year and while my son learned so much, I felt it was almost all through play, which was perfect at this age. They also spent a lot of time outdoors at their own playground and also at the nearby neighborhood playground. Great experience! What amenities does the facility have? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything? Maybe a little better communication with parents from the administration. Messages felt short and sometimes came last minute. Is there anything you would like to add about how the school is handling the pandemic? No. I think they did all they could. Communication could have been better at times, but I felt that is the fault of the city or DOE, not them.Review from the Spring 2022 Early Childhood Education Survey
Location: 500 19th Street, Brooklyn NY 11215 Type of facility: Pre-K Review: Our son just finished Pre-K at K280 and I can’t say enough good things about the program. I found the administration and staff to be communicative and warm, and the parent community is very involved and supportive. The cluster classes (music, science, library, gym, art) really seemed to open new areas of interest and exploration for my son. I can’t speak for all of the teachers, but we were lucky enough to land in Ms. Eva and Ms. Jenna’s classroom for the year and they staged so many fun activities and showed so much love and care for the kids. I was thoroughly impressed by how much my son developed (especially socially) as a result of being in their classroom. He also participated in A Playdate Every Day after school and the team there is also just lovely. They put on an end-of-year show with skits and songs and I’ve seen my son put a lot of their social/play lessons into practice, which…is not something I actually expected, to be honest. ? We had an amazing experience at 280 and I would choose it again in a heartbeat. What amenities does the facility have? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything? I wish the lunches were a bit better/more nutritive, but knowing what public school budgets are like, I get it. Is there anything you would like to add about how the school is handling the pandemic? All of the kids were masked; administration notified us of any COVID cases within the school and we received separate notifications for exposure within our child’s class with mandatory quarantine and testing in the latter case.Review from the Spring 2022 Early Childhood Education Survey
Location: Windsor Terrace Type of facility: 3K Review: We moved our child to 3K at K280 early in the school year from a smaller private program and were nervous it might be too institutional given its size. We were wrong. K280 was overall a great experience and set the bar incredibly high for school years to come. The structure of the week was great and the special classes (Gym on Monday, Science on Thursday) helped the week pass and kept things interesting. Her class did so many activities (baby chicks! field trip to local theatre to learn Encanto dances! Friendsgiving! the list goes on) so there was always something to talk about-- some of this stemmed from her amazing teachers, I am sure, but my sense is the administration supported this. She loved her warm, patient and loving teachers and classmates and by the end of the year there were a lot of tears. Also, amazing after school care (chess and pottery?!) and early drop off (with kids in the same class kept together). What amenities does the facility have? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals, Has a gym, a science room, a library, a music room and an art room, each well equipped from what I can tell for littles! What would you change about the program, if anything? Covid closures were tough and the DOE policy seemed irrational. I felt there could be more communication around what kind of exposure our kid had (e.g. was it a teacher or a student in her class or a specialized teacher the class spent an hour with) to help us gauge what the risks were.3k programs???
They have 3K. My daughter has been very happy in their pre K program.Review from the Fall 2021 Early Childhood Education Survey
Type of facility: Pre-K Review: My child attended 4K here. We are having a wonderful experience. The program is rich (music, science, art, library, gym) with lots of play and classroom stations. My child comes home acting out what they do in music, singing the rhyming songs they learn in circle time, and telling us about whatever they are learning. What amenities does the facility provide? Type of facility: 3K Review: We've had a rocky road at K280, but would do it again to have our kid there. Because this is the first year of NYC Universal 3K, which happened very abruptly and with short notice, it was clear that K280 was scrambling a bit to make the program happen. That being said, I have deeply appreciated how hard many of the staff have worked to make it possible. It has been clear throughout that the administration loves our kids and wants the best for them and for their families. Our classroom experience has been especially challenging, as there were communication issues with our first classroom teacher, but eventually we got a new classroom teacher who is just wonderful. We were also lucky to get awesome paraprofessionals in our classroom who have been a great source of stability and communication. Our child is on the younger end of the age spectrum in 3K, being born in late fall, plus we welcomed a new baby just a few weeks before the school year started, so he's had some particular issues adjusting. The school has been great at helping us arrange to have him evaluated for a possible IEP, and the classroom paraprofessionals in particular have been an incredible source of information about how that process has been going and how our kid has responded to it. Worth noting: in the first year of the program, there has not been great support for kids that are not potty trained. It's clear that this is due to, again, the last-minute nature of putting the program together, and that the school is working on improving the situation, but for now it has been a little difficult to have a non-potty trained kid at K280. It's not a deal-breaker for us, and I have every confidence that the situation will be better next year, but it has been a hot topic of dissatisfaction among parents this year. TL;DR: K280's 3K program is a bit rough around the edges this year, and your mileage will vary depending on who your classroom teacher is, but it's clear that the administration is committed to the kids and to improving the program. K280 is free, and it guarantees your kid a seat in their excellent preK program, and all told it's a deal that's hard to beat. What amenities does the facility provide? Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I wish they offered a Spanish language activity cluster along with the science/library/gym activities they do! Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? Communication about possible exposure has been a bit difficult to parse, as we get messages not only from the school but also from the DOE, and it can be difficult to understand which messages are redundant and which contain new info. But that's a problem of too much info, not too little, and I'd rather deal with too much than too little any day!Review from the Fall 2021 Early Childhood Education Survey

Type of facility: 3K Review: So far it has been great! So many wonderful activities daily for the kids, and the after school program is fantastic. Our child has a more difficult time with drop off, but it’s a much bigger school than his former daycare and there is a lot of activity and commotion at that time. There is more structure than his former daycare but he has so much more exposure to different things and concepts. What amenities does the facility provide? We were really happy with our experience at K280. We did remote most of the year and the teachers on zoom were excellent (though in Sept-Dec we had our daughter in a pod where we didn't utilize the zooms as much as we did in the winter, so I can't speak as much to the back to school transition in the fall)--my daughter was usually very engaged on zoom and the homework assignments were useful to me to help structure her education during the rest of the day. We transitioned in April to 5 days in person and that was pretty seamless too--we found key people in the administration who were really helpful and approachable in navigating this and they held several meetings to keep parents informed. Also very satisfied with the classroom teacher and community even though it was only 2 months. They did have a few covid-related closures before we went in person but that may have been largely influenced by the upper grades that share the same building; I don't think there was notable transmission within the pre-K. I'd expect them to similarly adapt and persevere with whatever changes might come in 2021 (fingers crossed there won't be as many... :( )Review from the 2020–2021 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K Survey
Review: It was a weird year, but my son seemed to like the school. At K280, they go on "journeys" around the neighborhood (usually to nearby playgrounds) almost every day. So they spend a lot of time outside, which is great. My son learned a lot this year and also made a bunch of friends. That said, I think your child's experience really depends on the teacher you get. Facility amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Provides meals What would you change about the program? The "playground" at the school is really just a blacktop with some movable toys and little shade. I wish they had a permanent play structure at the school. I also wish the school were a little more diverse. Is there anything you would like to add about how the school handled the pandemic? The kids were required to wear masks inside and outside (except during rest time and eating). Communication was good about cases, etc. The school was shut down a few times during the year due to cases. Overall, I think the school did a good job. My son caught just one cold the whole year so obviously, masks work!Review from the 2019–2020 Daycare, Preschool, Pre-K, and K Survey
Review: Our daughter was enrolled in hybrid preK at K280 - we were placed there by the DOE and considered other options that would have been in person all five days, but ultimately chose K280 since we were also hiring a nanny to take care of our newborn baby starting in January 2021. Apart from the many holidays and somewhat limited time she's actually there, she loves being with the other kids, enjoys her teachers, and is happy at the end of the day. We also enrolled her in afterschool with A Playdate Everyday. We're not sure how things will go as the weather gets colder, but despite the relative strangeness of the program being run out of a trolley in Greenwood Cemetery, she's also loved it. Pre-COVID she was in daycare from ~8-6 so is comfortable with the long days. My answer may change if (when?) the DOE closes schools again, but on balance, we've been happy with our choice. I'm sure the experience would be even better if it were a more normal year and she was attending in person 5 days a week. Amenities offered: Has after-school options, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? More guidance about what to do with kids when not in school, more information from teachers about curriculum.4's
A few key differences between Beansprouts and K280: Where Beansprouts is very organized, K280 is absolutely not and it will grate on your nerves. I had 2 friends this year who didn’t get their class assignment until AFTER school had started and the administration was not responsive. And one got two assignments! I don’t know why they’re like that, I had a totally different administration when my oldest went but stuff like that happened then too. One of my favorite things about K280 is the cluster classes, there are phenomenal Music, Art, and Movement teachers, like actual kid magician teachers. Also Science class with an actual lab! But the wonderful Science teachers from 2 years ago are apparently on sabbatical or retired, so I can’t speak to the new one. But I don’t think you’ll get that same level at Beansprouts. One of my other favorite things about K280: it is an actual slice of NYC’s population. Kids from all kinds of families go there from all over Brooklyn, and you just don’t get that level of diversity at Beansprouts. How Reggio Emilia K280 is definitely depends on what teacher you get. We LOVED our fantastic teacher and hope we get her again, but I’d say she was Reggio-lite. There is no dedicated permanent outdoor playground at K280. They have been saying for years (said it on my tour 2 years ago): “This is the year we’re getting one!”, so who knows. They have some mats and play stuff set up on a blacktop instead. Beansprouts has multiple playground spaces. A note on the commute to K280: honestly was never too bad. We easily caught the bus on 7th Ave and it drops off right in front of the school. Beansprouts does after school pickup from K280, so if you do end up going, and do that after school you may only have to commute there once a day!2019-2020 Year Review
It's an amazing place. Despite the fact that it's so huge, the classrooms are so intimate. We love all the cluster classes, ie. extra classes everyday for science, music, art, library, and movement. My 4 year old has become such a thoughtful person, ready to explore the world. One thing to keep in mind is you are now in the public school system - which means funding is not like it is in private preschools. Ex. the outside play area is a bit old and uninspiring, often the tools in the classrooms don't work, response from administration can be slow, etc. But if you can get past that, you're kid is getting an amazing (and free!) experience. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals … What would you change? Better communication between parents and administration (not teacher specific, our teacher is amazing), particularly the parent coordinator department. It can be hard to get an answer or emailed responded to.2019-2020 Year Review
We were dismayed by our experience with K280 this year and would not recommend it. It is very teacher/class dependent, and we drew the short end of the stick. We had a brand new teacher who seemed overwhelmed, was pretty disorganized, and complained about her students and paraprofessional staff to parents. The building is also overwhelmingly large and not much effort is made to make it a welcoming place for little ones or their parents--I was yelled at by an administrator when I made a wrong turn and ended up in the wrong hallway, for example. The whole Reggio Emilia curriculum was also overstated; again, probably really class dependent--our class stopped going on 'journeys' after a few weeks because of some classroom management issues, and the parents were never informed. There were also several switch-outs with the teachers' aids (I think the team of 2 completely turned over in the 10 weeks we were there), which is too much change for little kids just starting school. My kid did love the science cluster class, but was very stressed out by everything else. We moved him mid-year to a private program (luckily found a space), and he is already much happier. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals … What would you change? Beyond the issues we faced in the classroom, communication with the administration was a bit last minute and disorganized--for example, parent teacher conferences were announced and set only a week beforehand. Also, some classes are dropped off or picked up in special "cluster" rooms first thing in the morning or at the end of the day (art, science, etc.), which can be a bit disconcerting for little kids getting used to such a big place. I'd suggest they consider grouping classes in 6 month age groups--ours had mostly Jan-May birthdays who were already 4.5 at the start of the year. The few fall birthdays (3 year olds) had a harder time. Finally, if you need after school care, it is really hard to change after-school programs. Everything fills up, and, if you need the coverage, you're pretty much stuck with your original choice unless a miracle happens--we were under the impression it was much more flexible.2019-2020 Year Review
We had a great experience at K-280 last year. The kids got to explore outside every day and go on little adventures to nearby parks and playgrounds. I often saw my son's class while I was out and about with my toddler. I was also very impressed with all the cluster classes – science, music, art, gym and library. My son kept a journal in both his classroom and science class, and I enjoyed going through it with him to see what he had been learning. They also go on a lot of field trips around the neighborhood. It's amazing how much he grew and matured during the school year. I believe it was the perfect preparation for Kindergarten. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals2019-2020 Year Review

Amazing afterschool options. Especially pleased with Brooklyn Nature Days. Though an other option we tried was bit unorganized. Lots of activities going on at this school and in the classroom that require parent participation. Administration is slightly disorganized (ID cards for parents to use at pick up/drop off still not ready for some by end of January). Parents basically supply the teachers with nearly all materials and supplies, even basic cleaning supplies. Most of the classrooms are visually cluttered. Journeys didn’t happen nearly as often as advertised during tour. Amazing speech therapist, pretty decent OT and PT. Lots of changes in classroom: kids leaving to go to private preschool, kids joining mid year, several paras coming and going. Teaching is sometimes too project based instead of focusing on the process. Teacher is doing a great job prepping kids for K academically. We are very happy with k280. The teachers are excellent - energetic, creative, adventurous, and caring - and my daughter loves school. I like that they go to the park every week even during the winter (though I’ve heard this depends on the teacher). … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals … What would you change? I wish public schools had healthier lunches but that’s a nationwide issue.2019-2020 Year Review
The program offers art, music, science, gym....so many opportunities for children to learn and thrive. It's very well run, and despite it's large size, is able to retain a very community-like feel. My child likes this school. She loves all the different programs. Connecting to other children in her class has not been as easy as it was with her prior program (beansprouts). … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals … What would you change? Our teacher at K280 is not as communicative as some of the other classrooms, in regards to sharing updates on what is happening within the classroom. But they are always extremely kind and loving to our child. I would also change the "blue mat" area outside - it's a playground that needs a glow up.Bishop Ford Pre-K - experience?
My two cents is that it is very Teacher dependent. There are bad teachers as well as good. Our first went to K280 are second will not be going.Bishop Ford Pre-K - experience?
I live in Kensington and my twins just started pre-K there in September. We are THRILLED with it. We chose K280 (Bishop Ford) over others in the neighborhood specifically because of their amazing program. The principle of K280 is the very well thought-of principle of PS10 - Laura Scott. She was tasked by DeBlasio to create a flagship pre-K center and given the freedom to design it. She's created a Reggio-Emilio inspired program where the teachers follow the interests of the kids and create the curriculum based on "inquires" that each class comes up with. They go on "journeys" around the neighborhood to discover new things and are empowered to follow their curiosity and learn through play. My kids absolutely love it and come home with lots of projects and stories of their day.Universal Pre-K Default Site
Echoing the praise for K-280. It may seem like a “default” because of the size, but we and many families actively chose the school and were very happy with the teachers and school philosophy (child-centered, hands-on learning, focus on social emotional development, lots of outdoor time). Bonus: there’s also a wonderful on-site after school program called Play date Everyday that fosters social emotional learning too.Universal Pre-K Default Site
Just wanted to mention that K280 the “pre-k center” is wonderful.Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool Survey
So let me begin by saying that I toured 25 pre-k programs before ultimately applying to K280. Yes, bananas, I know. All to say, I saw small, competitive, private programs, mid-size programs within elementary schools and full on pre-k centers, larger ones like K280 (452 students this year!). In this general neighborhood, we’re spoiled by the number of options available to us and there is a reason why K280 is the jewel of the Mayor’s eye and is the model for all other pre-k programs that came after it. It’s a great school and we’ve been pleased with our kid’s learning this year. From touring so many programs, what became most apparent was that K280 has a level of resources and access to facilities and opportunities that you don’t get standard in smaller programs - a large science classroom, large art classroom, large music classroom, huge gym, outdoor play area, to give a few examples. And being under the umbrella of a stellar elementary school like PS10 means it also pulls from the resources provided to those elementary students - this includes shared programming (my kid came home telling me about the Chinese acrobats they had perform in the auditorium today! Not to mention the laser show, the theatrical presentations, and the Harlem globetrotters who also apparently did a show last fall to name a few), as well as shared administration who are all great folks. The classrooms are all large, well-lit, and by the end of the year, so whimsical with decorations, it’s hard not to fall in love with the space. One of the main things I learned while touring so many programs is that beyond identifying programs that are conveniently located, I wanted a program that would be a solid option for what would be a very transitional year, which for us was putting our kid in a program that looks and feels like an elementary school but has the resources and gives the attention necessary for a four year old. After this year, I’m fully confident that the transition in to kindergarten won’t be so jarring for him. As for the teachers, I think the same goes for absolutely anywhere you go - there are incredible teachers and there are not so incredible teachers. There are teachers who are going to mesh well with your family and some who won’t. And there’s no picking who you get. So I’ll leave it at that as I don’t think it necessarily speaks to K280 itself nor do I think that any drawbacks with a particular teacher has equalled any particular drawback to learning for our family. Our kid is still very happy each day, loves to go to school, and has made lots of strides this year. DETAILS: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What you would change: Without any hesitation, my number 1 complaint and the complaint I very regularly hear from many other parents is ineffective communication. For all the wonderful things I can say about this school, the communication from the administration is awful - confusing, unclear, and tends to be at the 11th hour - leaving very little time to plan, prepare, or for it to be remotely effective. If you’re a parent who really likes to plan and look ahead at what’s on your calendar one or two weeks ahead, I’d encourage you to get involved by being a class parent or joining the PTA. That’s the quickest and most efficient way to stay on top of what’s coming down the pipeline.Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool Survey

We were very happy with our choice to send our daughter here. Despite the school being huge (25 pre-K classes!), we felt like this was a small, tight-knit community because of the kindness and conscientiousness of the teachers and staff. I was worried about there being too much of an early focus on academics, but that was not the case at all. Instead, we loved the hands-on, child-led approach and. felt like the school offered the right balance of structure and play/free time for 4-year olds. DETAILS: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What you would change: The one area where I would suggest some improvement would be communication, which at times has been a bit disorganized and spotty. On a few occasions, email announcements were sent late (or there was conflicting information between announcements from different sources, eg parent coordinator, administration, website) and sometimes the information was not presented in a way that is clear. Other times, it felt like we were getting incessant, extensive information, almost too far in advance, about random things. It is usually nothing hugely important, so it’s more annoying than truly problematic, but if you are someone that needs a lot of advance notice and clarity about things like PTA meetings or book fairs, this might bug you. (This issue did not extend to our specific class-the teachers have been great at communicating to the group and one on one, via email and the class web page.)Review from the 2019 PSP Daycare, Preschool Survey

We are really enjoying our experience at K280 and HIGHLY recommend it. I was a little worried about the experience of going to a school for one year, but honestly the advantages have been amazing, particularly that the school is entirely catered to the needs of a 4 year old. It is very community oriented, so even though its 450+, it doesn't feel like it and the teachers are communicative and thoughtful. I have seen real growth and maturity come from my kid. There are dedicated MUSIC, ART, SCIENCE, GYM/MOVEMENT, and LIBRARY teachers! There are some communication hiccups from the administration, but honestly they are much better to deal with than our previous preschool. The other worry I had going in was the bathrooms, which are located down the hall and not in the classroom, but it didn't phase my kid a bit. Free early drop off is a bonus too! We love our teacher and the philosophy of the school. All of the “special” (gym, science, music, etc) teachers seem great too. Facilities are very nice. Don’t love the administration- participate principal Laura Scott. She gives lots of lip service but not a lot of action. I feel that when I’ve voiced concerns to her she’s unfairly blamed the classroom teacher for faults of the administration. Gary Nusser (VP) is much better but obviously doesn’t have the power that Ms. Scott does. We love this school - it's so great, for at least a year, for our son to be the same age as everyone else in the school, and for the administration to be solely focused on the needs of the Pre-K kids. That said, I do think the whole Reggio Emilia thing and the "School of Journeys" concept is a little oversold. It varies from class to class, but often the journeys just consist of going to the nearby playground or even just playing in the grass in front of the school. Also, we got a pretty blah teacher at first - Tonia Townes - who basically refused to speak to parents, never emailed us about what the students were doing, and always seemed so disorganized. Our son didn't seem happy, and started to lose interest in the subjects he used to love, like art. Vice Principal Gary heard our concerns right away and had our son moved to a new teacher the day after we met with him. Now our son is with a wonderful, kind spirit, Shannon Smith, and he is excited about everything they do. They do go on more field trips and have been exploring interesting topics like "community" and now robots. There are many ways for parents to participate in her class, but we also know she's got it covered. It's not exactly a school for academics, but at this age, all these kids need is to learn how to make friends and not have their natural curiosity squashed by grownups. Great school! 24 PreK classes, so seemed very big the first week, but that means so much resource; separate science, art, music rooms, big play space, library, etc. We LOVED all the teachers. A very exceptional bunch! Principal is terrific too. Can’t recommend this school more highly - it’s well worth the long walk from center slope!!! About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change? The learning philosophy is great, and despite its size, the facility is well organized and well-run. They have a lot of extras - separate teachers for art, music, library, gym/movement, science. My child loved the fact they go outside pretty much every day, weather permitting (although there were plenty of days this winter I thought they could have been out and they stayed in). About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change? There could be more consistency in communication to parents both from the individual teacher, the administration and the PTA. I felt as though we didn't get a lot of communications related to the actual learning and structure but mostly about things like fundraisers. My child's teacher also could have been much more communicative, but I think it's individual to her as other friend's had different experiences.Review from the 2017/2018 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey
My son loves K280! It is an amazing gem of a school. He loves all the friends he has made, and is becoming an eager learner and independent kid. His class is warm and friendly, his teachers are fabulous. They have "cluster classes" in science, art, gym, sign language, and library - just like he will experience in elementary school. Somehow a school of 500 four-year-olds is as warm and friendly and supportive than a tiny daycare or preschool (both of which he attended previously). Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals, outdoor space is limited but they go to neighboring parks and on journeys in the neighborhood. Communication from the administration is a little disorganized and sometimes confusing - but the teachers and PTA do a good job of keeping everyone in the loop.Review from the 2016/2017 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey

Type: Pre-K About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals Review: My whole family has been really happy with the PreK program at K280. My twins love going to school everyday and have learned so much while having fun. The teachers are kind and knowledgeable about this specific age group, and the entire school is built around inquiry-based learning, allowing every class to customize to its students. The Science cluster and sign language were huge hits with my kids. There is also a focus on social-emotional learning, belong the kids adjust to separation, a class environment, other children, etc. There is a lot of choice time and outdoor play (there is a blue mat area outside and a playground a couple of blocks away). The classes also take various field trips throughout the year; our class went to Tiny Scientist twice, Greenwood Cemetery, Giocare Playschool (for a workshop about Jackson Pollock), Park Slope Performing Arts (during an inquiry about plays and the theater), and a special program through Prospect Park. Although it is a very large program, it never felt big in a bad way; it did have some great benefits from its size, though. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? The communication from the school (not the classroom) was often last minute and sometimes confusing.Review from the 2016/2017 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey
Type: Pre-K About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals Review: K280 is phenomenal. Our son had a great year. He grew so much, going from a hesitant kid to a kid excited and running to school, with real friends, relationships, and interests away from home. The school is a full-on real school experience. They have a dedicated science room (with 2 science teachers), a music room, art, gym, and a cute and safe outdoor space. They really get the play-based curriculum and how to nurture little kids. His teachers were wonderful and we found the administration helpful and responsive. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? We wished the school security was a bit more substantial. There is 1 guard at each entrance (2 entrances), but they didn't seem terribly aware and certainly didn't make us feel like they could handle much. All the kids (over 400!) arrive and leave at the same time, which especially at the start of school feels really chaotic. We got used to it and the guards did seem to know everyone by mid-year, but we wished there was a better way to do drop-off, and that the security felt more...secure.Review from the 2016/2017 PSP Daycare, Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten Survey

Review: A child driven program, the teachers were very compassionate and loving. Lots of outdoor activities, journeys, and trips. Large auditorium for indoor gym time, especially on bad weather days it was very handy. They had a science lab, an art lab and music room where the kids learned through play and age appropriate activities. My son's only complaint was the quiet time which is a state-mandated nap time for Pre-K. PTA was strong and well organized, did a lot of fun events for the kids. They also had free early drop off which was very flexible. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Review: Overall, this PreK experience has prepped my kids for K extremely well. They are able to go from full time Nanny to part time nanny/part time school, then to full time school (which for us means no nanny next year but instead they stay at school for the afterschool program). This taught them what going to school means, in a low risk environment. I love that. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Since it is a PreK center the students are from all over and will go to schools all over. The AWESOME benefit means it is way more diverse in student body than my kids will get at their zoned K school. The drawback, however, is we are creating relationships with people we likely won't see much next year and that's hard. Given the pros though I don't know how I would change this other than loosen zoning restrictions on K-5 but that seems a little extreme. Location: 19th Street between Prospect Park West and 10th Ave Review: We absolutely love this school. The entire school is Reggio Emelio based- inquiry based. This means the kids go out on walks called "journeys" every day and as the kids discover things on their journey the teacher then brings those interests into the classroom and develops lessons around them. Each classroom is unique and has artwork hanging around the room that pertains the childrens journeys as well as other items. The teachers also work with the kids on social behavior, dealing with strong emotions and working as a team. There is a lot of opportunity for parents to be involved if they want to be and even thought the school is very large, there is a sense of community among the parents, kids and teachers. Review: Our son loves his teachers and his class. I love that they try to get out and in the neighborhood on their journeys as often as possible, often going outside more than once a day. They are not stuck in their individual class rooms all day. They have a library, science room, music room and indoor gym and auditorium. There is early drop off and free breakfast for all. They also have free lunch although my son doesn't eat it. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? If I had to pick something I guess better outdoor space. It's pretty minimal. But they make great use of what they have and take journeys to a local playground which allows the kiddos to stretch their legs and learn how to walk together. Review: We loved K280! I wish my child could have stayed beyond preK. Once the kids are acclimated to the teachers and each other, they take local (walking) journeys to play grounds, businesses, Prospect Park, etc. It's a wonderful way to expand upon an already rich classroom based inquiry curriculum. Students also experienced cluster classes of music, art, science, and movement 1-2 times/week in their own stand-alone class rooms in addition to having these elements incorporated into their regular classroom experience. The school opened a lovely library at the end of the 2015-2016 year. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides meals What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? If there is a downside it is that the former high school facility has been retrofitted for preK, meaning no toilets and sinks in the rooms, grown up size toilets, etc. But the administration did a good job of adapting the space for the audience.
