  • Chronic back issues

Dear back pain sufferer — I lost your original post, but deducing from what I read in the responses, you are struggling to find a way to resolve your back pain. As someone who dealt with this for years I strongly recommend that you get yourself to a conventional spine doctor to get your issue accurately assessed. I’m a big fan of acupuncture and massage and Pilates for ongoing issues, but if none of these have helped in a long term way then it is time to go to a regular doctor. DO NOT go to a chiropractor. I highly recommend a back doctor with the perfectly apropos name Dr. John Bendo, who has the best interpersonal skills of any orthopedist I’ve met. He is at NYU-Langone/Hospital for Joint Diseases and consistently ranked as one of the top back doctors in NYC. Do not let the fact that he is a surgeon scare you away, as I did for far too long. Dr. Bendo does not recommend surgery unless it is the only choice. He did two spinal fusions/laminectomies for me more than 10 years ago and it has literally made the difference between my being able to function and not. It cured my chronic lower back pain. Now I have significant spinal degeneration in my neck, but he is advising me to put off surgery for as long as possible, because the results are not always as good as they are in the lumbar spine. Instead he has prescribed PT and recommended Pilates, which has helped a great deal. NYU-Langone is also an excellent choice for back assessment and (if needed) surgery. You go for xrays or an MRI on one floor and half an hour later are reviewing the scans with your doctor on another floor of the building. The entire staff is well organized and professional.

I highly recommend Dr. John Bendo at NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases. He is a back specialist, one of the very best in NYC. After months of chiropractic care, cortisone injections into my coccyx (terribly painful and not at all effective for me), I finally went to him and he was the first to correctly diagnose my spine problems. I only delayed because the idea of going to a back surgeon scared me, but my only regret was that I waited as long as I did. I have referred quite a number of people to him and they have all been happy with their care. Here's a link to his contact info: http://www.med.nyu.edu/biosketch/bendoj01 August 2012

I highly recommend the practice of Dr. John Bendo in Manhattan - 2 offices, one near Union Square (he is affiliated with Hospital for Joint Diseases) and one on the Upper East Side, I think. After being hit by a car as a pedestrian several years ago and having back pain, I went to a local chiropractor who failed to read the xrays she ordered correctly and subsequently aggravated what turned out to be a serious spinal injury/condition that was improved only with surgery. Dr. Bendo and his associated would never recommend surgery unless it was the only choice (I got a second opinion, which concurred with Bendo's). They do a thorough evaluation, can do xrays on site in the Union Square area office, will send you across the street to the hospital for an MRI or CT if it's needed, and know how to correctly read all of those films and provide an accurate diagnosis. A couple of years ago I went snow tubing (stupid idea for someone with my history) and the bumping along sparked significant pain again. I returned to Bendo's practice fearing that I had done something terrible to my back, and was quickly and correctly diagnosed with something else. I was sent for PT (which was excellent and ameliorated much of the problem) and a rheumatologist.

For broken bones, I’m a passionate fan of the Hospital for Joint Diseases (part of NYU Medical Center) Immediate Care Center on 2nd Ave. and 17th Street in Manhattan, open 8am-11pm. According to their website: “The Immediate Care Center is New York City’s only walk-in clinic for patients with muscle, bone and joint conditions and injuries open seven days a week.” We’ve been there a few times (sadly) and there’s never been much of a wait. The doctors are absolutely fantastic, and at least some members of the orthopedic department have offices in Brooklyn for follow-up. (The thing you have to look out for is, even though the emergency clinic takes all kinds of insurance, not all of the doctors do afterward.) (December 2011)

For emergencies dealing with bones, the Hospital for Joint Diseases, which is affiliated with NYU, is fantastic. Their Immediate Care Center is like an emergency room—open til 11pm according to the following link—but with much shorter waits, and the docs are amazing. (May 2011)
