My friend, Jeannie Chan, is taking on new clients as a child and adult therapist. She has 12 years of experience, having spent 7 years in early education at Grace Church School in Brooklyn Heights and 5 years as a child welfare therapist. She is a licensed social worker and earned her MSW from NYU Silver School of Social Work and BA in Psychology from Barnard College. I’ve known Jeannie my entire life and always felt lucky having a friend so deeply rooted in empathy, reflection and generosity. Now that my partner and I are parents (2.5 yo and 5.5 yo), we also feel fortunate having a friend with a well of child development knowledge. It comes out in the ways she plays with our kids and the gifts she chooses for them. Our kids love her - she has a calm energy and lets the kids lead! From the perspective of a parent, she expertly answers all my questions that generally start, “Should I worry that…” She also helped my husband and I understand how we can better disagree or argue with one another in front of our kids, which felt both thoughtful of the inevitability of partners arguing and respectful of our little audience taking it in. Most recently, Jeannie has been an amazing coach to me as I’ve struggled with big transitions. She coached me on how to talk to my then 4.5yo about my mother’s passing, printed a personalized book that featured my daughter and mother (something she also did for students as a teacher at Grace Church), and manage my grief while parenting 2 kids. I am excited that others can benefit from the ways in which Jeannie has enriched my kids' development and my approach to parenting.
