  • ISO Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) for food allergy for infant <1yo

I’d highly recommend the Jaffe Clinic at Mt. Sinai, specially Dr. Amanda Cox. It’s a trek from Brooklyn, but 100% worth it for us. She’s always booked but has regular cancellations if you keep trying. I also think she prioritizes getting younger (<1) kiddos in ASAP given the benefits of early introduction. My daughter had suspected allergies when we introduced solids (bad eczema and contact reactions / hives / itching with several foods, including peanut and some tree nuts) and Dr. Cox was very aggressive in doing food challenges ASAP so we could introduce any foods she wasn’t actually allergic to. While we’re not technically doing OIT, we were able to figure out what foods my daughter is actually allergic to vs. just contact reactions, and have successfully kept many foods in her diet we might have avoided (due to contact reactions and/or testing results ) if not for Dr. Cox’s guidance.

We waited 6 months for an appointment at the Jaffe Center at Mt. Sinai. They were wonderful. However, it was a long wait and we didn’t qualify for their current studies, so they won’t offer anything but standard peanut OIT until 4 yrs old.

We’ve had a really positive experience with the OIT program at Mt. Sinai on the UES. I don’t think they offer OIT for kids under 1, but we started OIT for peanut when our kid was around 2. We’ve done both peanut and sesame for our now-4-year old. It can take some time (often months) to get an initial appointment, but once you’re in, scheduling is pretty easy. I’d recommend calling to schedule with an allergist at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mt. Sinai ASAP - they’ll evaluate your kid and refer you to the OIT program if appropriate. We see Dr. Tsuang and she’s fantastic, but since Mt. Sinai has one of the leading pediatric food allergy programs in the country, I think any one of the doctors would probably be great. As a footnote, I’ll also add that our kid was diagnosed with a number of tree nut allergies at age 1 that he has since grown out of. This is absolutely not true for everyone, but we’ve been fortunate to be able to do OIT for his persistent allergies.
  • Allergy DR recommedations

The Mount Sinai Jaffe Food Allergy Institute is great. As a mom of an allergic child with some pretty serious anaphylactic reactions in her history, we chose them over the more local allergists. We like Dr. Kattan but have seen others in the practice as well. They also do clinical trials. I think there might even be OIT now, but we are not part of that.
  • Looking for a pediatric allergist and/or gastroenterologist

Mt. Sinai has the best - the Jaffee Pediatric Allergy Institute. It's tough to get an appointment and is on UES, but it's excellent. We lucked out and got in the next day due to a cancelation so it's worth a try.
  • Re: any recommendations for an allergist for an infant?

We went to Jaffe institute at Mt. Sinai hospital, but i am thinking of switching because it is too far, and pretty difficult to get an appointment. I forget the ladies name, but there are three docs, and i heard all of them are good, and it just depends which one accepts your insurance, because they all take different insurances. (November 2011)

Anyone at Mt Sinai Allergy Institute....I see Dr. Nowak there (212 241 5548), they are excellent, but they are all the way at east 98th street. (November 2011)

The best pediatric allergists in the city are at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mt. Sinai in Manhattan. They are on the cutting edge of pediatric allergy research and treatment, and all the doctors there are amazing. Just Google it and you'll find the info. Both our kids go there and we feel we're in extremely capable hands. Good luck, X, who has a child with multiple food and environmental allergies. (November 2011)

I highly recommend going to the food allergy center at Mt. Sinai. They do a very extensive evaluation and provide feeding challenges if necessary. You have to be patient b/c it takes a long time to get an appointment but they are really the experts. (November 2011)

Highly recommend making the trip up to Mt. Sinai's pediatric allergy clinic. We see Dr. Cox, but I hear they're all great. (November 2011)

Our daughter has food allergies and we have been very happy with the Jaffe food allergy institute at Mt Sinai- they are really the experts in this area. We see Dr Cox but I think all the docs are good. Definitely worth the trip to Manhattan. They not just know the latest research but seem to really get what it is like to have a child with food allergies (the practical and emotional aspects). They take things seriously but are non-alarmist when its not needed. We went somewhere in Brooklyn first (that was highly recommended) and were not comfortable there. (November 2011)

We are happy with Dr Amanda Cox at Mt Sinai's Jaffee center. it's the major research hub of food allergies in the city. it's a long haul to get up there and you need to make an apt way in advance. but if you think your child's situation might be a complicated one, they are the go-to place. also have a good nutritionist on staff.
