  • Re: Swimming lessons: pool with a deep end?

Imagine Swimming at the Bedford Armory has a deep end! My 3 year old just finished a week long intensive class with them and it was great…he’s nervous in the water but they had him having fun and doing new things pretty much immediately. They also do weekly lessons, which we just signed him up for.
  • Re: ISO: Swim lessons - Private or Group

Thanks to PSP recs, my son did two intensives this summer with Imagine Swimming (Crown Hts Armory location). The first was 3 days long bc it was the July 4 holiday week, and the second was a full 5 day intensive last week. He made a shocking amount of progress and loved every minute. The first week was especially good - the teacher (Nicholas) was a magician. The very first day he went from not liking to put his face in the water to picking up rings from the bottom of the pool (and wanting to do that all summer), and by the end of his second week he was swimming ~10-15 ft with two different strokes and breathing, jumping off the platform in the deep end and swimming to the side, and, well, trying to do back float/stroke (needs some work there). These were 1 hour sessions which I thought might feel long but he was fully engaged the whole time and wished they were two hours. The Crown Hts Armory is also a really nice facility. Imagine is great, but I think the format of one hour sessions for multiple days in a row (compared to 30 minutes once a week) also made a huge difference in terms of momentum and progress, at least for my son. I think that if we do opt for once a week classes now, he will get more out of them bc he has a solid base to work from. Imagine does offer private lessons but the intensive groups I think had a max of 4 and many groups were often fewer than that (one day my son was actually by himself).
  • Swim classes for 4yo with no experience

My daughter, 4.75, just started lessons at Imagine Swimming, Crown Heights. She says “it is wonderful. I like it. They have kick boards and whales that kids kick on. There’s only 3 kids in my class. They also have kicking hippopotamuses.” It seems like they foster a very positive swimming culture. Parents can’t go in the water, but we are visible and audible to the kids from a bleacher area at the side of the pool.
  • Multi day swim lesson intensive?

My daughter did Imagine Swim's intensive and the leap was phenomenal. They have them all summer and on any school breaks.
  • After-school swim lessons for 6yr old?

Shout out for Imagine Swimming, though it’s in crown heights (two stops from GAP or one to three stops from Atlantic). The location is the Major Owens Community Center. The pool is very warm and I’ve been very impressed with the instruction. And access to family swim times is open to families who are doing the classes. Each group is 4 kids maximum and in our experience is usually closer to 2 kids. Their lessons helped our son overcome some fears he had about swimming in a camp setting.
  • Anyone been to Family Swim at the Crown Heights Armory?

My husband and 15 month old went once. you have to buy this weird swim diaper ($15). The time they went it was very busy from 5-530 and they made people get out at 530 since they are technically half hour slots. It wasn’t as crowded at 530 and probably continued to get less crowded. It was warmer than any of the other pools we’ve been in. If you make an account and put your card info on before it makes it easier to check in. Overall would definitely recommend!

we went once on Saturday. I was told by the person that controls the sign in that Saturdays was less crowded. Sundays tend to be much more busy and the first shifts tend to be the busiest. If there is not a lot of people they don’t enforce the 1/2 hour turns so you get to stay longer in the pool. If it is crowded then they will start asking people to leave after 1/2 hour to give a chance to everyone. It is nice for the kids they enjoy I saw a lot of toddlers and small children with their parents. If your child can swim I suggest the lane swimming that has more availability during the morning and night.
