2018 Birth Survey
I think my biggest takeaway through this process was *trust.* I had several friends who were pregnant around the same time as me, and became very close with a baby group through Park Slope Parents. I cannot begin to tell you how many stories I heard from all of these other moms that made me think, ""My doctors never would have made that mistake."" There seem to be guidelines and recommendations that most U.S. OBs follow, and then there's the standard of care the doctors at this practice hold themselves to, which is much higher. A quick example- when I went past 40 weeks, they had me come in every 1-2 days to check the status of my placenta and the baby's oxygen level (whereas other practices might not check you for a full week- and my good friend ended up needing an emergency C section due to this lack of monitoring). I know Dr. Kurtz the best as I have been seeing him as my gynecologist for over 10 years, and I was lucky that the timing worked out for him to deliver my baby girl as well. He is kind but firm and decisive, which was absolutely my recipe for birthing success. I saw almost every other doctor in the practice throughout my pregnancy, and also loved Dr. Biroschak (super sweet and understanding) and Dr. Carranza (decisive and knowledgeable) if you would prefer a woman. I NEVER felt the need to hire a doula or have anyone in the room to ""stand up for me"" with this team. As confident as one can be going into their first childbirth, I felt that with the doctors in this practice.Review submitted via the PSP Birth Survey
Dr. Kurtz was great, very professional. Although he did at one point suggest an episiotomy which I was NOT interested in. So I was glad that baby baby came soon after. Based on a 09/17 birthing experienceReview submitted via the PSP Birth Survey
Dr. Kurtz was terrible. He was part of a rotating pool of doctors at NYOBGYN of Mount Sinai, located in Brooklyn Heights, and although the other doctors were great, he was rude and would simply do things without warning or asking permission. We wish we would have asked one of other OBGYN doctors to "special" us, to avoid him. As luck would have it, he was on call, the day of the birth. The baby arrived fine, but he reached in to pull the baby out even though the delivery was proceeding well -- NOT COOL! -- and he decided he didn't want to wait for delayed cord clamping, after he'd reluctantly agreed to wait a few minutes, etc. Absolutely terrible. Competent but very rushed. Based on February 2017 birth experience
