Our son went through this process last summer. It was mainly remote then, not sure if it's still the same. We spent about 7 months on the waitlist before his evaluation process started. It was not too time consuming and being able to do it remotely made things manageable. Most appointments took less time than they told us they would. There were a few in-person visits, mainly uptown (which was not very convenient) but they did not take very long. All in all, we were pleased with the process and the thorough evaluation.

Our teenager recently participated in Healthy Brain Network/Child Mind Institute evaluation study. Here is what we experienced: — scheduling for the intake was maybe a month or so. That was a zoom call with parents and kid. — scheduling for the full evaluation (parent surveys, child surveys, in-person interviews, several types of personality and IQ tests, physical tests, fMRI) was initially 6+ months out, but then they contacted us about the option of doing most of the evaluation on one long day vs coming back several times (fMRI done at different location at separate times). This bumped us up to a few months out, based on when we could do when school was closed. — competed a few hours’ worth of surveys prior to the day — full day was in Harlem, with a break for lunch. Parent active participation only for maybe an hour, rest of time in waiting room with periodic checking in. I saw other families with younger kids come and go, some were there for weekly appointments. Spoke with parent of child around 6 or so and she said it had been good process, they did the separate vs one-day version. — kid said it was all fine, some of it was fun, some of it annoying — got some immediate feedback based on the conversations and testing in a private convo with the lead doc. — fMRI was a week later, overall maybe 2 hours, kid did not love the loud experience but they made it as comfortable as possible — about 3 weeks later had one hour zoom to review full report and then received all results via email. Overall was valuable and kid wanted to do because of the research value / how it could help others over and above value for kid. Gave us a good update on kid’s mental health status and challenges and treatment plan suggestions, plus detailed IQ test and other interesting data. Much more thorough than previous intake for kid we did with a psychiatrist.

Both my kids were evaluated there, they were 8 and 12. The evaluation is extensive, I believe 4 sessions of 2.5 to 3 hours per session, so for me it was 8 sessions and I had to pull the kids from school at 1:30pm for 2:30pm appointment in the city. They also administer an MRI, which my older kid did not do as he had braces. The evaluation is very thorough and you receive a written report. The parent also need to fill out a very long survey. Both my kids have IEPs, my now, high schooler, does not get any services at school as he goes to a private school, but has a 504, extended testing time and preferential seating. I definitely think it’s worth it and has helped my younger kid, who definitely needs assistance.
