We really like Hanover Place -- it's not a fancy place and your child will be doing no yoga, but it's low-key and friendly and the teachers are lovely. Our son has been going there for about 9 months (started at 8 months) and has loved both of the classrooms he has been in (the infant room and now the toddler room). It has great hours (8-7) and just generally a relaxed vibe. They have really helped us out with teaching our son to eat, which we were struggling with....whenever there's a new food we aren't sure how to get him to eat, we think, let's just send it to daycare for lunch and he'll learn there! Slightly annoying that you have to provide your own food, but the daycare is reasonably priced so it's worth it.

My baby was only enrolled for about six months (we left because we moved), but I believe that the negatives (slightly institutional feel) were outweighed by its strengths - very, very warm and loving teachers and staff. What would you change? Provide meals!

Our daughter was at Hanover from 3 months to almost 2.5 years. We moved her because we wanted a daycare closer to home and one that had their own outdoor space. For younger kids I highly recommend Hanover- although the space is no frills the caregivers know what they're doing and are great. Our daughter really enjoyed it and still talks about the friends she made their. We moved her because as she was getting older we wanted her to be at a place with it's own outdoors space so she could go outside as much as possible. I also wasn't thrilled that when I picked her up (5:45-6:30) the kids were almost always watching TV. You can't beat the hours (8-6:45) and the price. I also liked that there was a deli next door where you could buy lunch if needed. About the facility: Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours

Type: Daycare About the facility: Has afterschool options Review: My daughter started at Hanover Place almost a year ago when she was 3 months old and both she and we have been very happy. Her caregivers have been excellent and she is very well taken care of. Other pluses are the reasonable cost and hours (8 am-6:45 pm). The biggest drawback is the space which is pretty institutional, but it is clean and well taken care of. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I would like outdoor space

Program: "young toddlers" room Age: 1-2 years Review: In short: We love our teachers at Hanover, it is a fairly priced program in a convenient location, but the administration leaves much to be desired and I wish our class was smaller. We started our child at 14 months and were frankly annoyed when they told us on our first day that she was not going to be with the teachers whom we had visited and spoken with three months earlier when we enrolled. But it was for the best - instead of transitioning from "older infants" in three months she went straight to the "young toddlers" room and so she will be with these women for almost a year. My daughter loves the teachers and we are happy with them too, although some are more in line with our approach to child rearing than others (eg, some are very much "NO! Bad! That is not yours!" while others are more likely to calmly separate offenders and offer guidance on sharing). They don't have very detailed feedback most days but this is probably because we are in the largest class for her age - 12-15 kids (most other classes are around 6-8). Advice? I think a pragmatic approach is best - there are some exceptional places that are more expensive than a nanny but there are plenty of good enough places where your child will be safe and loved. Make peace with that, and I think it makes the search so much more bearable.

PROGRAM: 15 Hanover Place TIME: 3 days/week AGE: < 1 year REVIEW: My 4 month old started in the larger of the two infant rooms at Hanover Place in Downtown Brooklyn about 6 weeks ago, and so far the experience has been positive. It is a city-licensed commercial day care facility that also has a nursery school and a UPK program - overall they serve a couple hundred childen. Though it's more "institutional" feeling, I was personally more comfortable with the level of oversight and support for staff in a large program, as opposed to the small group daycares run out of converted apartments that seem to be so common in the area. The staff was good at guiding both myself and my baby through the transition process, and are friendly and seem to genuinely like the kids they care for. I'm told turnover is low, and several staff members have been there for over a decade. They don't have much in the way of structured activity for the under 1's, but at that age I don't think it's necessary. I think much of the day is spent just keeping up with the feeding, changing and napping routines of each baby. The staff all talk to the kids and spend a lot of time holding them, playing on the floor, etc. My child seems happy every day when I arrive for pickup, which is pretty much the only thing I care about. Families have to provide meals and snacks, but once we're into solids, I think I'd rather choose the meals anyway. They do stress that only healthy foods can be brought in. Times of meals, naps and diapers are recorded so you can see what happened when. The pricing was also some of the most reasonable we found in the area. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? PROGRAM: 15 Hanover Place TIME: Full Days, 5 days/week AGE: 1-2 years REVIEW: - There are some amazing teachers and some okay teachers. But there are more amazing ones than not, so the balance is in our favor. - I love having the kids in different classrooms by age group. I feel they get more specialized attention for their developing skills. - I love that they get to meet so many different teachers and students since they do switch classrooms. - They seem to have a schedule, but it's hard to tell how much it is followed. - I like that we provide their own meals so I can control what my child is eating, but they do often give snacks that I don't approve of. Organic cheerios is fine, except that they seem to have them in abundance, sometimes straight from the floor and right before pick-up, which can spoil dinner. - I wish they had outdoor space instead of having to walk in a not great part of town (busy, loud and construction) to a playground. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Recommend WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN? Absolutely

Length of time: Full time M-F Child’s Age: 2-3 years Type of facility: Privately run daycare/preschool with multiple classes and teachers REVIEW: Our 3 year old has been at Hanson Place since she was 5 months old in the babies room, the the 1-2s room, and is currently in the 2-3s. She will be moving up to the next class in September. She has grown up with the same several kids who have become good friends. The teachers at HP are energetic and loving. They are great at getting the children in a routine and encouraging their independence. There is a nice mix is structured activities and free play. Our daughter is always coming home with new projects and sharing new things she has learned. The teachers played a major role in getting her potty trained as well. There are also parent teacher conferences twice a year and performances/celebrations for some of the holidays. While there is no designated outdoor space, there is a small "gym" room with big foam pads and also a "big area" with trikes, push toys, and other toys to play with and for the kids to run around. Weather permitting, the kids (including the babies) go on daily walks outside and to the playground or park. The older kids also have field trips. There is little turnover with the head teachers and the families are also wonderful. Parents are welcome to be more involved-- whether reading a story during breakfast time or being a class parent. We also appreciate the diverse families at HP. We plan to have our daughter there through their UPK program and our second child is starting in the babies room this fall. For some families, naps may be more challenging here. It took our daughter awhile to adjust to napping in the babies room and eventually all the kids take one 2-hour nap per day (even if you have a different schedule at home). Would you recommend? Highly recommend Would you send your child again? Absolutely

Length of time: Full Child’s Age: < 1 year2-3 years Type of facility: Privately run daycare/preschool with multiple classes and teachersThere is little/no parental involvement with the administration or running of the facility. REVIEW: Hanover Place is a solid option for full day care in Brooklyn. It's reasonably priced, very convenient to most subway lines and starts as young as 6 weeks. It has engaged staff with less turnover than many day care centers. My daughter started at 13 weeks and will be there until she is 10 months. She has had a good experience. Our son attended for six months, from age 22 months to 28 months after his previous day care closed unexpectedly, and he also had a good experience. (Both children stopped attending or will stop attending because of being accepted off the wait list after 1year+ for other schools.) There is consistent staffing, with energetic teachers. The management is organized and very approachable. One time when there was an accident with my son and another kid who collided in the nice indoor gym they have it was well handled by the school, even though it required my partner taking him to the the emergency room for a couple of stitches. The babies socialize, are clean and entertained, and have a good routine with feedings, etc. My daughter has never had a diaper rash and she has always been happy to go to school, smiling and laughing a lot with her teachers. Some of her teachers don't fit the mold of who you think you might find in the baby room (some aren't 'soft'), but they're highly competent and the kids really love them. As a toddler my son really enjoyed the combination of structure and free play, and liked his teachers too. He really enjoyed the other kids, it was great to have him in such a diverse environment. The school did a good job promoting potty training with him. The one thing that I was disappointed in was the use of tv late in the day before pick up for the toddlers. It wasn't every day, but it was more often than I'd like. Would you recommend? Recommend Would you send your child again? Maybe

Program: Infant Room Length of Time: 5 days/week Full Days Review: I love that the Director is very involved and knows all the children's names and development levels. I also like that the room graduation is based on development and not age (i.e. when the child can stand, he goes to the next room, etc.). The teachers are very involved and warm, but sometimes can be very opinionated and want things done a certain way. But they are very good about teaching the children skills that they need to learn (eating from a bottle, rolling over, etc.) Recommend (Hi/Rec/DoNot): Highly recommend Would you send your child again? Absolutely

Length of Time: Full time Child's Age: Review: Hanover takes babies from 6 weeks and goes all the way to Pre-K. My daughter started at 3 months. It is a no frills daycare and the group of caregivers are amazing. It is clear from day 1 that your kids are the number one priority. They feel like part of your family quickly and I was thankful for thier patience and care daily. Each day you receive a sheet that gives you the days info, nap times, diapers, bottles/food and the activities they did that day. We have done one from transition from the baby room to the 12-18 month room. She was slowly transitioned over a week and the baby room caregiver she loves still comes by for hugs. I can't recommend them enough. Also, this is one of the few racial and economic diverse daycares we found which we believe is very important. I would say this center is not for high maintenance parents. You have to be able to roll with things. Recommend (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend Would you send your child again? Absolutely
