I also like Flying Hippo in South Slope as a closer alternative, not Chinese but reminds me of the Japanese-French style of light, not-too-sweet petit fours.Macarons in Brooklyn?

Our son celebrated his 3rd birthday recently with a marzipan sponge cake filled with strawberry marmalade and topped with vanilla white chocolate mousse from Flying Hippo bakery. Our son's favorite part was that the cake was customized with the love of his life - Blippi (and Blippi's vehicles). It was amazing and true to Natalia's (the owner) promise, the cake tasted like strawberry ice cream but at room temperature. Given the ongoing pandemic, Natalia worked with us to create a smaller cake appropriate to the circumstances and was a delight to consult with on all aspects of the design and flavors. We can't recommend her more highly!Shout out for birthday cake
Now that our go-to for birthday cakes (DuJour) is no longer around, we've been looking for a new place and found the new(ish) Flying Hippo on 5th ave and 7st st. The cake we got for our daughter's birthday was beautiful and tasted amazing (as in fights for the last piece amazing). They're doing holiday pastries as well and we've already ordered for Christmas dinner!
