On the suggestion of a friend we contacted Feelings School when our kindergartener was going through some challenging times with sadness and meltdowns. After the intake we were referred to a social worker with whom our child had a total of 8 sessions. I'm sure it's a wonderful program for many kids but for our child/family it was not the right program. First, their model is focused on teaching the child about the brain. The philosophy, as I understand it at least, is that if a child understands how the brain works and about emotions the child will be able to work through challenging moments. Our young kid just didn't seem interested, I'm guessing that's not uncommon at a young age. Neither did she develop a rapport with the provider. Second, they allot a certain number of sessions to each child and once you pass that number, the child "graduates" -- and if the child needs more therapy the family needs to go find a new therapist. I really wish this had been clearer to me at the beginning (it was not explained well during the intake). It is not easy for our child to develop trust with a stranger and just as that seemed to be happening we had to go back to square one. The people here were very kind. But the cost is high, the logistics got challenging, and they do not take insurance. While I am always reluctant to say negative things, I would like to help parents who are searching for therapy options understand what this one is (since it's very different from others) and what it is not. I suggest parents also get clarity on whether a child will be exited from the practice after a fixed number of sessions. Had I known these facts, we would have brought our child to a different practice.
  • Therapist/program for OCD

We worked with therapists from the feelings school. They offered us a sliding scale which made it accessible for my son. His/out struggle is more adhd derived, and he was a very resistant participant, but they were fabulous in giving him direct tools, talking about his anxieties, struggles… and helping him to understand the way his brain and body work, and sometimes work against what he knows he can, should, needs to do. They also worked with us. I highly recommend their program.
  • "Feelings School"- experience

My 7y/o son saw a therapist there earlier this year and had a really positive experience. He was struggling with expressing his feelings at the time and would often just get angry and shutdown. They specialize in short-term therapy so my son had 12 sessions and it really helped give him the tools to understand what he's feeling and how to express it in a more productive, healthy way.
  • Looking for therapist for Parent Child Interaction Therapy

Hi, I’d recommend reaching out to the Feelings School. It’s a counseling practice located in Brooklyn Heights. We worked with them for our 6 y/o, who we were struggling to connect with and manage. I’m not sure if they are exactly what you’re looking for but I definitely think it’s worth a chat with Rachel or Lissa (they founded the practice) to see if they could be helpful.
  • Therapist for 5-year-old

I don’t have info about the specific therapist that you mentioned BUT I do highly recommend reaching out to Feelings School, a kid focused therapy practice located in Brooklyn Heights. My son has dealt with emotional disregulation and he’s been making a lot of progress since working with them. My son sees Sophie Kuhn but there are a few therapists in the practice to choose from based on availability and fit.
