  • OBGYN Recs, Older Mothers

I loved Dr. Gary Leonard at Methodist. I gave birth there at 47 and thought he and the hospital were wonderful.
  • Review from the Spring 2022 Birthing Survey

10/10 - straight talking, practical, willing to answer questions, calm manner.
  • Review from the 2021 Birthing Experience Survey

I saw Dr. Leonard for all of my prenatal visits and could not have been happier with his care. He is not alarmist and I always left the office feeling much calmer than when I arrived. The main nurse who works with him, Grace, was also super helpful whenever I called with questions in between visits. Unfortunately due to COVID I did not get to meet any of the other doctors in the practice until arriving at the hospital. Dr. Dobrenis was on call the night I was in labor. She was personable enough but she was essentially a stranger. I did not have the same familiarity and trust that I had built with Dr. Leonard. My preference was for a low-intervention birthing experience and I felt that she respected this at first. However, she started mentioning the possibility of a c-section much earlier than I appreciated and even admitted that Dr. Leonard would have been more patient.

Dr Leonard is a very hands-off / low-intervention OB-GYN. If you're looking for an emotionally caring provider, he's not your guy. But if you're looking for someone extremely experienced, then he's worth seeing. You definitely have to be your own advocate when under his care, but I never doubted his expertise.
  • Recommendations for OBGYNs at Alexandra Cohen

I am expecting my first child in Feb and recently switched to Dr. Garrick Leonard because I wanted to deliver at Alexandra Cohen (all private rooms!) and found references that he was one of the more “hands-off” of the doctors delivering there. I had 2 appointments with him so far and have found him to be very pragmatic. I hired a doula who has also had a few positive experiences with him. He was very encouraging about me hiring a doula (something my prior doctor at NYP Loma was not as excited about). The practice is a little bit far from Park Slope all the way up on 82nd street and they are also a pretty busy practice with 5-6 doctors. Because of covid I may not get to meet all of them before delivery. Obviously I don’t have direct experience on what he’s like during delivery but I hope this is somewhat helpful!
  • Recommendations for OBGYNs at Alexandra Cohen

I recently delivered my daughter at NYP/Weill Cornell and I cannot recommend my OBGYN, Dr Garrick Leonard, highly enough. Like you, I wanted to be at a hospital with a level 4 NICU due to possible complications, but also wanted a doctor who would be low intervention and supportive of my desire for a low intervention birth. Dr Leonard was all those things and more. He was happy for me to continue the pregnancy beyond up to 42 weeks, as long as baby and I were in good health (wasn't an issue as she came before 40 weeks anyhow). We also spoke in the lead up to birth about other interventions that I would like to avoid and he assured me that as long as we were both doing well, that would not be a problem. I was fortunate enough that Dr Leonard was on call the day I delivered and I felt supported and well cared for the entire time. I really appreciated his even-handed bedside manner, that was very calming to my anxiety - prone self. For what it's worth, I was told by the sonographer at my NT scan that he is known as the doctor's doctor, because he is the one all the doctors in the hospital want to go to when they are pregnant.
