Founded in 1995 by Artistic/Executive Director Diane Jacobowitz, Dancewave’s unique model combines rigorous training with artistic integrity in a supportive environment. Students are mentored by accomplished dance professionals, which allows for personal growth as well as superior dance education. Dancers have the opportunity to join our pre-professional dance companies, where they gain technical proficiency and self-confidence through training, rehearsals and performances.
Dancewave's mission is to provide access to a community dance experience that encourages individuality and whole-person development throughout New York City and beyond. Through innovative programming, we use dance as an expressive vehicle for transformation. Dancewave’s Culture Model creates an inclusive environment for all ages, abilities, sexual orientations, racial and socio-economic backgrounds.
The Dancewave Culture Model is grounded in restorative and social-emotional learning practices and guided by the Young Artist Citizens focus, which is designed to empower students to lead, take ownership of their learning, and become active members of their learning community.
Programs offered: Creative Movement (Drop-in), Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop, Ensemble & Company Programs, Summer Camps and Summer Intensives
Dance classes held during Fall (Sept-Dec), Spring (Jan-May) and Summer (July-August) Sessions available in various styles for ages 2-18 yrs.

Modern dance classes for K?

We really love ballet classes with Dancewave: https://dancewave.org/spring-classes/ Our daughter has been attending classes since she was 2 and they've been fantastic with all of our desired outcomes: confidence boost, learning some ballet basics, different learning environments, independence, etc. When our daughter started, she really struggled with transitioning into a new learning environment and the instructors were so patient with her and inviting (despite her wailing).Review submitted via the 2016-2017 Afterschool and Extracurricular Survey
Specific program name: Ballet Held: Weekend Review: We have 2 wonderful semesters of ballet. My daughter looked forward to her class each Saturday and came home with a knowledge of ballet vocabulary and dance moves. They are very informal. No fancy, expensive costumes for recitals. I think that is a plus. However, my daughter was upset that for both semesters her costume was very plain and other groups had sparkly tutus. Skills developed: Team building, communication skills, ballet specific vocabulary, confidence What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I would offer modern dance at the Old Fist Church location. Only ballet is offered at this location. If you ask my daughter, she will say she would like a fancier costume, like the other classes, had for the recitals. Age of child: 2 Venue Review: We just used the space and didn't hire one of their teachers to do a dance/movement activity. The space was large and accommodating to our group. Reserving the space was easy, they provided tables and chairs.Summer Camp Survey 2016
Age of child: 4, almost 5 Review: The morning was dance, and the afternoon was art. At the end of the week, there was a dance performance that incorporated the art made. My daughter was the youngest there--most kids were 6--and she had a blast. The instructors were kind and fun, and the days were full of variety. Dancewave on 4th ave and Dean has a hip hop class. They recently had a performance and I think half the class was boys, though my daughter's not in that class. There are also boys in their modern dance companies. You could ask them about a specific class I guess.Re: Modern Dance Classes
Dancewave has great modern classes for kids this age and older. (And adults too actually). New classes start mid-January, but there is a Holiday Fiesta on Dec 6th that is open to the public and you could see some of the amazing dance companies, ages 7 to 17 yrs. I'd also like to recommend Dancewave which has great classes for 10 thru teen and has various Park Slope locations, depending on the class. The "highest-level" classes are the Companies, but those auditions are in September (4 levels: Young Mover's Ensemble (YME, then Dancewave Company levels known as DCI, DCII, and DCIII), which are Modern Dance, and also a Ballet focused Company). My daughter started with the regular classes at age 9 or 10, then was in YME at 12 and is now in DCIII. Really amazing teachers and work. My daughter loves it.(no subject)
