Brooklyn Players Summer Camp and School-Year Classes

Description

Since 2005 Brooklyn Players has been offering singing, vocal technique and musical theater classes on 7th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues for K through adults.  All classes are small with individualized attention in a cozy, professional and nurturing environment.  We pride ourselves on teaching everyone - the shyest beginner to those heading towards a singing or theatrical career.

Brooklyn Players Summer Program is a small 4-week musical theater program for 8-13 year olds, entering 3rd through 8th grades that started in 2002.  We have a large staff of gifted artists and educators who help create a joyous month of fun, with excellent training in dance, singing, theater, and art.  For summer 2016 we’re renting space from The Kingsboro Temple, 415 7th Street.

  • 2018 Summer Camp Reviews

Age of child: 10 Summer 2018 Review: Brooklyn Players is a 4-week camp where kids work together to mount a 75-minute version of a Broadway musical. In 3 years my daughter has done Billy Elliott, Hair ans Newsies. The program is a commitment and the plays are ambitious. But the kids get great vocal, acting and choreography training. There is a huge emphasis on team work and community and creating a space where kids feel they can take risks and stretch themselves. Older kids encourage younger kids. There is non-traditional casting. Every one has lines. Campers stay on as counselors. Several kids aged out at the end of this summer so there is plenty of room for new kids to join.
  • Review from the 2017 PSP Summer Camp Survey

I always ask at pick-up, how was your day. And absolutely every day at BP, my daughter responds, "great!" i asked why she likes it so much and she said, "it's fun and everyone is nice." What she means by that is that director really emphasizes the team aspect of putting a show together. No one is allowed to gloat if they get the part they want or to pout if they don't. They are encouraged to trust that they will have fun and be important to the show no matter how big or small their role. All the older kids tell the younger kids they did a good job after the show, the counselors write notes to the kids at the end. It's a space where creative kids feel free to be themselves and feel mutually respected. Also the shows they put on are really amazing, especially given the time they have. so far my daughter has done age-appropriate versions of Billy Elliot and Hair. If you could change anything, what would it be? The schedule is a little hectic in the first week. Age of child: 9 Based on a Summer 2017 experience
  • Summer Camp Survey 2016

Age of child: 8 Review: This is that small camp no one knows about that you want to tell everyone about because it's so awesome but you also want to keep it your little secret so it stays small. You have to commit to 4 full weeks and the kids mount a 90-minute version of Broadway musical. I can't understate the positive experience my daughter had. She learned a lot about theater, singing, dancing, staging. She also learned a lot about teamwork and cooperation and mutual support. She was the youngest kid and it was her first year so she had the smallest part. Every single one of the older kids with much bigger roles made a point of telling her what a good job she did after the play. That's the culture the camp director quite consciously fosters and it's what distinguishes the program. What would you change about the program, if anything? Nothing! The director Corinne Goodman knows what she is doing and I wouldn't mess with it!

Camp Brooklyn Players Gowanus - Douglas between 3rd & 4th Avenue Day Care or Sleep Away-- DC Program: Age of Child: 11 Likes: Staff was fantastic -- taught great theater skills and built a great sense of community. My twin daughters attended this camp for the 1st time at age 11 and loved it every single day from Day 1. They worked on a production of the Lion King, and during camp, my daughters lived and breathed Lion King 24 hours a day for four weeks. They were so excited about what they were doing at camp that they constantly listened to Lion King music at home, acted out scenes, danced, etc. They became very close with other kids -- girls and boys alike. What would you change? Nothing. Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Highly recommend Do you have any other information to add? Review from 2012 Summer Camp Experience

Camp Brooklyn Players Douglas St Day Care or Sleep Away-- Day Camp Program: Age of Child: 7 Likes: Corrine, the owner/director, is fabulous - warm, loving, and very attentive to the children's needs as well as being incredibly responsive to my emails and questions. She has really created a family there between the campers and counselors/professionals. The camp itself was great for my daughter who is a theater maniac! After just the first day she came out saying how much she loved it and wanted to go back next year (she has never done that before). The took them outside everyday to play and had structured and unstructured activities, different specialties (acting, singing, dance), and art every day. Each child was made to feel they were an important part of the show (no matter how large or small the role). The end result of the 4-week program was quite a professional show - our whole family was impressed! What would you change? Nothing Would you send your child(ren) again? Yes Do you recommend? Highly recommend Do you have any other information to add? Review from 2012 Summer Camp Experience

Brooklyn Players Name of specific class (if applicable) - Summer Program Location - 295 Douglass Street How old is your child? (or the age when he/she attended this program)? Age: - 12 What did you/your child like about this program or class? Corinne Goodman, the director of Brooklyn Summer Players, is a brilliant and gifted drama and music teacher. She and her staff create a safe and nurturing environment each summer for around 25 children between the ages of 8 and 13 to really dig into the process of creating the full studio staging of a musical. My son has attended the program since he was 8 and every year it gets better. Many theater programs for kids have no rigor or passion for theater, others seem to be for the proto-professional theater child. Brooklyn Players Summer Program gets the balance between fun and learning just right. Each discipline (singing, dancing, acting, wardrobe, staging) is taught by working professionals, and the kids put on an amazing show every year at the end of the program. Kudos to Corinne for creating such a valuable resource in our community. There's art class, outdoor games and swimming too! What would you change about the program? I used to say that they needed air conditioning in the building, but this year, through a fundraising effort the space was fitted with central air. Maybe for it to run for an extra week. Will you send your child back to this program or class again? (Or would you if you could?) Yes Would you recommend this program to other parents for their child in the future? Highly recommend
