Review Submitted June 2024Motumbaxe has been really wonderful for my 8 year old. He has found his place there. For the past two years he was having horrible anxiety. Since starting afterschool at Motumbaxe last fall he has become much more confident and self assured. He still has the occasional bout of anxiety, but it's become much more tame. Part of it is learning a martial art and getting stronger and devoting time to getting good at something and becoming disciplined. But it's also just a special place. He previously did Taekwondo and while he had fun once he was there, getting him there on a Saturday morning was impossible. This is the polar opposite of that. He's always eager to go to Capoeira on Saturday morning and at his insistence, my husband takes him to the 5pm Friday Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class after his regular Friday afterschool. He also asks to go whenever he has a free Monday afternoon. On top of this he goes twice a week for a full afternoon of Capoeira and Jiu Jitsu, 2:30pm-5pm (they pick him up from PS 133), and then stays for the 5pm class both days, so he's there until 6pm. That's 4 days a week and he's still asking to go more. We plan to keep the studio membership over the summer, so he can continue going to the Saturday classes, and likely to some of the evening classes after camp as well.

Martial arts for three year oldA friend of mine has his young boys (can't recall their ages) train capoeria with Joao Lampreia at Motumbaxe Capoeira. Classes are at Nevins and Atlantic. I think the young kids classes start at 3 years. Lampreia's a great guy -- I know him from jiu-jitsu.
