  • Review from the Spring 2023 Early Education Survey

Review: Our child started in the 3s classroom at Brooklyn Friends and we absolutely love it. It's been such a joyful year. It is a play-based curriculum that includes lots of art, dramatic play, song, and dance. Her teachers were loving and firm, attentive to social/emotional issues, and incredibly thoughtful. They were great role models for both the children and the parents when it came to promoting kindness, setting limits, and having fun. Our child loved the weekly trips to library, dance class, and music class. The school has really encouraged our child's creativity and also has gotten her thinking a lot about kindness with her friends. I confess I have even learned some mindfulness techniques based on what our child told us about school! The afterschool has also been a very rich environment - playing, cooking, singing, putting on plays, chess, and yoga. Neither parent had ever been a private school setting before and we were pleasantly surprised by how warm and welcoming the parent community is. It's been a lovely experience. Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Cost of tuition and there seems to be more diversity in the lower and upper schools than the preschool.

Program: Length of Time: 3 full days Child's Age: 2-3 years Review: My daughter had amazing experience at the family center last year. The teachers were warm and caring and the woman who runs the program, Sara Soll, is incredible. The facility is very new and clean and nice. We loved that they sent home notes every day telling us what the kids did and about their day. Recommend (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend Would you send your child again? Absolutely

Length of TIme: Half Days, 5 days a week Child's Age: 2-3 years Review: We loved the Family Center at Brooklyn Friends. It is Brooklyn Friends 2s program, and it was the perfect gentle introduction to school for my son. Separation was gentle, and exactly what he needed. The facility is brand new and wonderful -- each room has its own kiddy-sized bathroom, for example, which is great for toilet training kids. They offer both half day and full day programs. The teachers were simply amazing. They made the entire experience a pleasure. My son plays with every single kid in his class, many of whom have very different personalities, and I attribute this to the teachers. They also helped him learn to stand up for himself, which I appreciate. And they actually taught the kids about shapes and colors (including secondary colors). This year they did a whole module about Eric Carle and created a mural inspired by Eric Carle. It was amazing, especially if you factored in that it was done by a bunch of 2-3 year olds. Be warned that the Family Center is NOT automatic entry into the main Brooklyn Friends 3s (it used to be, but is not anymore). The only thing I disliked was having to do the preschool applications again! Do you recommend? (Hi/Rec/DoNot) Highly recommend

PROGRAM: 3s class Length of Time: Full time 3-4 years Our son has been enrolled at BFS for three years now, and we couldn't be happier. His teachers are warm and loving, his classmates reflect the diversity of our neighborhood, and he has access to all kinds of enriching activities, from dance class to library visits to quiet time in the block corner. He's learning a lot about the world, but most importantly, he's learning to be a good person--I see the way he tries to resolve conflicts, echoing the language of his teachers, and I recognize the value of a Quaker education. I also appreciate the benefits I receive as a parent sending my child to a preschool connected to a larger school. I can attend coffee hours with the school psychologist, hear guest speakers, participate in community-wide events like the winter carnival and performances by older students, and receive valuable feedback through two formal parent-teacher conferences and a classroom blog. I love this school, and so does my son! Do You Recommend? Highly recommend (Review date: December, 2011)

I recommend you look at Brooklyn Friends School downtown. Even though it's not in Park Slope, Friends is great with kids who have different learning styles or some delays, or not! It's worth the trek. We had two in St Anns and one in Friends, I can only say the most favorable things about Brooklyn Friends. Jan 2011
