Review from the Spring 2024 Early Education Survey
REVIEW: Very kind teachers that were younger and less experienced - but they were wonderful and helped our child with a rough transition to 3k. A very new facility with nice aesthetics and an elevator. There is no outdoor space and the children rarely went outside to a playground, because it is pretty far away. There is an indoor play area that is used daily though. Meals&snacks were varied and dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Seems to have staffing issues with the younger child classes. Students were exposed to Spanish and Chess. Our child had lots of fun with both.; Amenities: Has after-school options, Provides meals; What would you change? Some of the classrooms are in the lower level with no windows. It doesn't feel dark, but there is no natural light source. The Director of the facility isn't the best. Program: Bright Horizons South Westchester at Executive Park Location: Yonkers, NY Review: We absolutely love this daycare. The women who run this location are incredible, the interior space is warm and inviting, and the activities that they offer for the children are wonderful. There is a huge outdoor space with multiple play-yards and it has just been wonderful for our daughter this year. Highly recommend. One was a bit lazier than others so we didn’t request her again (it was fine since my kids are six years old) but all were caring and attentive. I had a good experience with it; we used it when our nanny was out for several days with an injury. The downside is that you will likely be booked with different babysitters if you use it for multiple days. You might have the option to request the same one (assuming she's available) after one visit. It was a little annoying having to get my son (17 months at the time) to meet a new babysitter for multiple days but he did well with all of them.Feedback on Bright Horizons in-home, backup care
We have used the Bright Horizons In-Home backup care a handful of times, both before pre-Covid and most recently last week. We have been very pleased with the service. The care providers are really communicative, on time, and seem committed to provide good care. In an abundance of caution, we didn't use the service during Covid until last week when we needed emergency backup care for our 2.5 year old son. The provider was in contact with us the night before - she let us know she was fully vaccinated. We had just moved into a new apartment earlier that week, so we let her know that we would prefer her to take our son to the playground for a majority of the day since our apartment was still chaotic. She was on time, masked, and our son warmed up to her after a few minutes of being a shy toddler. Overall they had a great day - we were so happy with her (and she lives within walking distance) so we are likely going to request her again next time we need backup care. I couldn’t get someone last minute so do book as soon as you can. You can always cancel, they have a flexible policy. I haven’t been able to get coverage the couple of times I tried in Covid. We used them last summer for 2 weeks and it was great! We were both working from home and needed care before our daycare reopened. Every nanny is different but we had a wonderful experience. They give you a form to use but I preferred just talking to the nanny about how the day went. I did write up my daughter’s schedule so that she knew as well as the locations of playgrounds, etc. I do recognize that the 2 weeks allowed the nanny and my daughter to get their own rhythm and I have taken days off instead of using the benefit for single days off from day care since as I imagine it won’t be as successful for a one off, just too much change to be as successful but I actually don’t know!Feedback on Bright Horizons in-home, backup care
I've used Bright Horizons back up in-home care several times pre-COVID, always when my little one had to stay home sick from daycare for a mild illness. The reservation system is easy and most of the caregivers we were sent were pretty great. However, I had one experience that makes me hesitant to recommend wholeheartedly. One time we had a caregiver who really seemed to have no idea what she was doing. She didn't know how to take an infant's temperature - asked if she should put it in the baby's mouth. I also came home to her petting my cats and looking through my record collection while the baby was on the other side of the apartment attempting to walk (wobbly phase). I'm not sure how I could have avoided this other than doing a bit of my own diligence and speaking to the caregiver before she arrived, and/or sending her home when things felt off. I really do believe most folks are great, but there may be a few less experienced caregivers who are sent on busy days. I provided my strong feedback for this person and hope very much that they gave a good system to weed out those who aren't performing.Bright horizons - dumbo center or in-home care
We have used other Bright Horizons centers for backup care, not specifically the one in Dumbo. The centers are always nice and I feel my kid is safe ( last time was in 2019). What I found at the time though, to be honest, is that a lot of times he would come back with a cold because of the exposure to different kids. I'm sure in covid times they are being extra safe. So more recently we tried at home care to reduce his exposure. We used it last minute for 1 week and ended up with 3 different caregivers. But I feel like that was our fault. Had we planned ahead and requested the same person I feel we could've gotten it. They were all from College Sitters and were all fine. They washed their hands at arrival, some changed clothes, used masks all the time, didn't eat with the child so not to remove mask,... we kept wearing masks and open windows do have circulation (back in November I think).2019-2020 Year Review
Review: We have a very positive experience at Bright Horizons at 345 Adams St. Our daughter started there in their age 2 program ("Young Preschool"). Her teachers were warm and welcoming. Our daughter started to look forward to going to school. We were pleased with the educational and nurturing components of the BH program. Hi Anna! I'm a SAHM but we've used Bright Horizons at three different locations around downtown Manhattan in the last couple months. We never felt stressed leaving our son with any of the caretakers and they were all very kind and supportive while we were figuring out drop off and such. They will confirm your reservation as soon as one of their facilities accepts it, usually at least a week and a half before (we make ours early) or faster if you ask with shorter notice. We've never not been accommodated. Our experience is that they usually ask you to bring a lunch and an "evening snack" which they will give them around 4:00 PM, but they will provide a "morning snack" around 9:00 AM. Even though the website will encourage you to upload all the required documents, individual centers don't have access to that so print them out and bring them as well. Also, some centers are peanut free and some are not, but we haven't figured out how to access that info beforehand so we just don't send peanut products anymore. We've used Bright Horizons a bunch. Its VERY useful when our nanny is sick/on vacation. My husband makes the reservations as its through his job, not mine, but we often hear within a few hours. They only time we have ever had a problem was one week in July. But you shouldnt have an issue getting into at least one of the locations. You have to provide food, wipes, milk diapers, but I believe they do have some cheerios for snack time. My only issue with them was at the first location we went to they did not ask for ID when I came, nor when my aunt (who no one there had met) came to visit my daughter. We have since gone to another facility and they asked for ID each time.Bright Horizons?
I use bright horizons when my nanny is out, and it works fine. It’s definitely worse than our nanny or even a babysitter, but it’s just fine. I never worry about his safety or anything, and I haven’t had any bad experiences. Our nanny share family gets an in-home nanny from Bright Horizons, and I would 100% never do that after hearing about their experience (they go back though, so different strokes). I agree the online reservation system is confusing, but depending on the location, you can just book directly. In my experience, it’s confirmed within about half an hour if it’s during work hours. We use a place just a couple blocks from my office, which is only backup care, no regular daycare. The caregivers are well-supervised, and there’s a take-home sheet they give you where they write how they ate, when they sleep, anything they did. They’re also quick to call if anything is conceivably wrong. They put color-coded stickers on all your kids stuff and their name tag so I never worry they’ll give him someone else’s bottles or lunch. He naps fine while he’s there, actually a little more than normal (perhaps in protest). I think he usually does fine. They give him the pacifier more than I asked them to, but it’s a weird experience for him so I get it. The first couple times, I hung out and I don’t think he noticed when I left. I think he was mostly fine all morning, but is definitely more wary than normal. Once they did a shift change and the people from the baby room and the toddler room swapped, and he had a hard time with that since he’d gotten used to the baby room caregiver. Now he’s a little older I think it’s harder for him when I leave, but I’m taking him later this week and he’ll be in the toddler room for the first time where there’s more going on. I think it’s actually harder for him when I visit at lunch, too.Daycare recommendations
My general thought is that you should call the bigger chain daycares asap such as Bright Horizons. They at least have multiple locations and you have a better shot at getting your daughter in somewhere. It may not be in the ideal location, but you are starting to look on the late side. I've used multiple Bright Horizons as backup care for my daughters, and I'm consistently happy with them. We went to the 345 Adams location several times when she was younger and the staff was caring, engaged, and bright. They have an age-appropriate curriculum and my girls are *highly* engaged all day-- in fact, my kids have been at BH for the past several days and my toddler comes home bursting with things to tell me. While it requires a commute, if you work downtown this is a really great daycare option. The teachers are so warm and lovely, the space is large and well designed, including a play area with equipment and space for running around, and they’re very good about communication, sending pictures and a summary of what the kids did each day. She didn't seem to have much interest in our daughter - walked around reading books out to herself while our daughter played silently on the floor. She didn't seem to want to take any direction from me. Seemed incredulous that we didn't want our daughter to watch TV and similarly incredulous that I wasn't planning to give our daughter painkillers for a runny nose. My husband and I worked alternative days at home that week to monitor her & our daughter which sort of defeated the point. But I've heard from others who've used it a totally different experience. I meant to call BH to tell them but at the end of the week we were just so happy to have it behind us that I forgot. Our daughter seemed relieved when the regular babysitter returned the week after. We used it for emergency when our nanny couldn't make it and it depends on the person. We mostly had students come who are more like occasional sitters. You do have to manage them and tell them what to do. I used it when my middle son was about 7-8 months old and I just got back to work and I actually stayed and worked from home (once it was also a snow day). I had to tell her what to do and when and take him for a walk around the block once a path was cleared etc. If you are using them for a longer time they may send you someone more experienced with your kid's age. I've used it a number of times in an emergency - and never been impressed. I think it's good if you just need a pair of eyes / grown up in the house to watch the kids but maybe don't expect a day of enrichment. The people I've had have all been low energy, disengaged and just not very good at dealing with kids (ironically). My kids are older now so I can make sure they know what they can do that day and how to ask for them to play games etc with them. I normally set up a playdate or ensure they go to the park for a few hours. Other than that I expect it's going to be a basic day of TV and snacks and I try and leave late and come home early. It's hit or miss - I've used the service several times, and it always depends on the person you get. I've had someone not show up TWICE (!) - once because of a sickness (which no one called to tell us about AND didn't try to find a replacement) and once they just didn't show. No warning, nothing. Bright Horizons contracts with different nanny/sitter agencies for the in-home care, and some are good and some aren't. We've used their in home care once. I was working from home that day so I could check in regularly and check in with monitors throughout the day as well which made me feel better. The person who came was very good and very detailed in her report of the day. What's nice is that you can ask for the same person for in home care the next time you need and if they're available they can come which I like for consistency. We used it for a 3 week gap between summer camp and school for our 3 year-old and it was excellent. We had two providers over the course of the 3 week span who were particularly good. I’ll look up their names and send them to you directly later today (you can request specific providers when you make your reservation). If you can, I would try to provide lunch for the caretakers, even something simple like having pasta or sandwich supplies on hand. I have used it recently as I was transitioning back to work after maternity leave - I also have it as a benefit from work. That allowed me to overlap with the caregiver at home. They have a very user friendly web site and customer service is also great. You can arrange child care for the same day if needed. Once you book in home care the caregiver assigned to you will call you the day before they come. The whole service seems very organized and reliable. That being said - I was not super impressed with the care giver they sent to take care of my 3 months old. She was quite young and had trouble giving my baby the bottle - which she does take from me/ other family. She did document all feeds, naps, diapers and communicated with me throughout the day to update me. She also send pictures. I felt safe leaving baby with her for a day - but probably wouldn't have hired her as a nanny. Of course I am not sure how representative my experience is for the care givers with BH. I would definitely use the service again when in a pinch. I have the same benefit through work and used once so far for my daughter who was 12mos at the time. The caregiver was scheduled for handling before and after the usual day with our nanny. It worked ok. She seemed nice but she arrived late and I’m not convinced our instructions were really followed... It was super convenient but I’d recommend to be super super clear with your instructions and baby schedule; and check that the caregiver clearly understood. I would use it again anyway if in need. It’s only a one-time experience and it was not for a full day or a sick baby... We used their in home care when we moved to Riverdale. The first woman was terrible and fell asleep multiple times with our then 1 year old, who would sit quietly and play. Thankfully, my husband had been working from home so knew our daughter was in no danger. He only discovered her sleeping when he had popped his head in to say hello and see how things were going. The second woman was much better, and was more active and engaging. They ended up going out to the park and playing while at our apartment. I've heard wonderful things about their daycare centers and I think you can use them as well for emergency care. I think if we were to do it all over again, we would probably bring our daughter to the center where there are multiple caregivers and likely a more engaging environment. I hope this doesn't scare you off of them. We may have just gotten a not so great first person. She may have had something going on personally which we didn't know about, like an emergency the night before which had prevented her from getting a good night's sleep. I don't know. I just wasn't too impressed and it made me reevaluate the in home care. I've used their in-home child care twice but was working from home as well. Both times, very nice, competent people came. The first time we used it, my son's daycare was closed and he had a blast with the person who came. The second time I needed help because he was sick and he was just too cranky, was older, and had (has) separation anxiety so it didnt work out with the new face. The person who came tried everything in the book to appease him so it wasn't her fault at all. She was super sweet. He just wouldnt stop crying for some reason. I don't have experience with the infant care, but if you are referring to the 20 Pine location, it's really nice (one of the nicest BH locations). It's brand new / renovated center and it is an actual preschool in addition to the backup care. I am using it for my school age child this summer.[PSPWorkingMoms] Backup care?

I'll add my voice to the chorus of endorsements for BH center-based backup care. I've been using them for the past 6 years. I used Pine St in 2010-2012 when my daughter was an infant/toddler (and my husband worked in that area), and more recently have been using the Times Square location for both of my kids (son is now 21 mos.) I've also used Rock Ctr and Park Ave when Times Sq not available. All are good. It's more about convenience - Times Sq is a 2-min walk from the B/D/F/M (and that station has an elevator), and 1 stop away from my office. The center itself is modern and clean. (Rock Ctr was also nice. I thought Park Ave was a little dingy - but my daughter loved it, so go figure.) But I've never had an issue with the staff at any of the centers. All are warm and engaging. Biggest problem I've had is scheduling care when public school is closed. Spots fill up very quickly those days - especially for older kids. My 5.5 yo son has been going to the Metrotech location since he was around two, whenever his daycare has days off. My husband works in the building its part of his job's benefit. My son loves going to "daddy's work school" and the facility is great. It's bright and new, there are large, dedicated rooms for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and older kids. They give a short written report of what he did and ate during the day. The caregivers are good, although there have been a couple of times when they thought my son was someone else or that he went in the day before but he didn't. It's probably because he doesn't go there consistently and every day they have different kids. My daughter is also 10 months old and we have used Bright Horizons backup care quite a bit, when our nanny has appointments or needs days off. We have used the 20 Pine Street location because it is close to my work and have had nothing but good experiences. The caregivers are great and there is always space. We've also used in-home caregivers on days when our nanny just needed a few hours off for appointments. We've had two different women and both were wonderful. We now request one of them and have recommended her to a friend, who was also very happy with her. I do think the quality of the caregivers can vary; my friend had one who seemed very inexperienced. Being able to request when you find someone you like is nice - it makes things a lot easier than going through the routine with a new person each time. Our company has a BH within our office (TriBeCa area) for backup daycare and I've use them twice. I was pleased with their staff, cleanliness, etc., though I'm sure it may vary by location. My son is normally with a nanny and not used to sleeping in a room with other babies. He was so excited to play with the kids that he struggled to nap or he'd fall asleep and wake up immediately when another baby cried in the room :( They couldn't do much to prevent this, but I don't blame them since he's not used the group nap environment. However, I liked that they were happy to call me when he went down and woke up so I was reassured he was doing ok. My impression is they're as informative as the parent wants. In other words, if you're not worried about it, they're only going to call you if they need guidance. Otherwise, if you want more reassurance, they can do more active posting. I know the napping thing sounds awful, but it was one day so I tried not to get too worked up. In all, he slept like 45 minutes and usually naps like 3-3.5 hours a day. He had a blast, didn't really fuss and just passed out immediately as we left the building :) Our location gave me a summary sheet of what he did, ate, drank, how long he slept and diaper changes. They also took a few pics and printed them, which was cute. One thing to highlight (not sure if it was just my location) but I they weren't "allowed" to use the microwave to heat up food, so basically they were using a bottle warmer to do it, which wasn't quite cutting it. They told me it requires the parent's consent, and I had to be present, so I ended up using the microwave to warm his food. In fairness, I packed frozen spinach and broccoli bites, and frozen containers so that was my fault, but they encouraged me to bring stuff, but didn't explain this upfront. I had a few bad experiences with the at-home sitters. (I've never used the centers.) We had several sitters not confirm the night before, one no-show, and one cancel without warning (I only found out because she hadn't confirmed and I was nervous). Bright Horizons had a 50/50 rate of finding replacements, and twice we were left without them providing the childcare I'd been promised. It's a bummer, as it's a great benefit from work and makes backup care much more affordable. But if I can't trust the sitter will show, what's the point of using the service? I'm actually taking my 17 month old son the next 3 days to the Brooklyn Metrotech Bright Horizons. He has gone several times and I always have a good experience. He's also gone to the Pine Street location in the city and that one was fine but the Brooklyn one is much larger and more open/bright so I just prefer it. I second the met life back up care. I actually used it for our son when he was just 5 months and we needed a stop gap of a week or two. It was his first time with anyone outside of his parents. They were very understanding and allowed (encouraged) me to come and go as I pleased and I nursed him as I was just next door. We used back up care quite frequently when my son was between 1 and 2 years old. We used the center at the met life building which is exclusively for backup care and therefore I didn't have a hard time finding a spot for him there. You can request any of the other bright horizons centers or some tutor time centers but I found that because those centers have children regularly enrolled there full time there may not be availability. I think you can reserve up to 30 days in advance so when I knew I needed care I would reserve it as soon as possible and generally didn't have a problem. I also used their babysitters for when my son was sick and I never had a problem with them no-showing but there were definitely some sitters who were better than others. One time in particular I wasn't thrilled when I got home and he had been watching tv all day but then again he was sick and he was cared for and I felt he was safe. But then on the flip side we had a great sitter from their service who we ended up hiring as a date night sitter who was very sweet and loved watching him.[PSP Working Moms MeetUps] Bright Horizons
I used the BH center on Kent Ave in Williamsburg for my 13 month old (at the time). We did not have a negative experience at all. They were very communicative and my son came back the way I sent him. The only complaint I had about the center is that it is at the basement level and had no windows. My second experience was using them last week for nanny care when I went to San Francisco on business. I booked 2 long days, 7:30am- 8:30pm. Initially they booked a male caregiver which I was a little concerned about because I was staying in a hotel and wanted some help while I got ready for the day. My son is now a precocious 15 month old boy with tons of energy, so I could use the help distracting him. The guy was booked for both days but cancelled the night before on both days. The replacement on the first day was WONDERFUL. So much so that I passed her info to friends in the area. They have already contacted her for a date night and feel as strongly as I do. She wasn't available for the full 2nd day so the agency was to send me a replacement at noon when she left. Sadly they couldn't find a replacement right away, though I was promised confirmation by 10am. I was stuck mid-day without a caregiver. Finally I was promised a replacement for 2pm which didn't show until 2:45pm. So from 12-2:45pm I was without a sitter. This was a major issue as I was to be in events at the time for work. Outside of this issue, it was a great service. I was disappointed that it was inconsistent though. I would absolute use them again. I think the issue for us was due to the 13 hour long booking. I've been using Bright Horizons drop in centers for 10 years (I have a 10 year old and a 6 year old) and I think it's the best benefit that my job offers (and I love my job!). I've used many in Manhattan: Park Ave (Met Life bldg), Patricia Carbine, Broad Street, Lexington Avenue, Pine Street. All have been great. Also, since your child is young, you can use the one on Adams street in downtown Brooklyn. It's fabulous! All have pluses and minuses. Some have outdoor space, others have bigger indoor spaces. Some are more accessible and others are more of a pain. Overall, we've been very happy and highly recommend this. I have no stake in this at all. We have taken [our son] to the bright horizons at met life as well and love it. They book early so on holiday breaks it's best to book them as early as possible (I think 3 weeks in advance). But if your company does not have this benefit I can imagine it is tough. My husband and I take turns taking off. I'm lucky that I can work from home at my job so I try to steal some hours in when he's sleeping or preoccupied with a toy or something. I'm lucky my manager is a mom of 3 and gets it...She has had one hell of a year this last scholastic year with her own kids getting sick constantly. I have used Bright Horizons backup care several times over the past year. I have used the at home option for when my son is too sick for daycare (needs an extra day to be home but isn't really sick). They are great, I can't recommend them enough. I have called the night before at 7pm when I needed someone the following morning and they have a contract out with Tender Loving Nannies as well as other nanny agencies to send out a caregiver. The sitters we have had are good, they are background checked and are aware of safety precautions that many people are not. For example my son has a severe nut allergy so I always mention this when booking them and the sitter arrives and is aware of precautions. For backup sick care the in home option is $6/hour if your employer subsidizes it, otherwise I believe it's more like standard nanny rates if there is no subsidy. When my son is not sick but his daycare is closed I have brought him to a backup care center through Bright Horizons which is also excellent in the MetLife Building is a full daycare for infant to school aged children that exclusively provides backup care for when school/daycare is out of session. I wanted to clarify the Bright Horizons...my company has a benefit where they will send someone to your home for $6/hr if your child is sick (<103,I think). I've only used it once but it's much cheaper than sittercity, etc.Re: Daycare That Takes Occasional Drop Ins

Thank you to all who responded to my query about in home backup care. We were able to reserve a wonderful sweet nanny to come over in less than 24 hours. Bright Horizons contracted with a nanny agency Tender Loving Nannies to send out this young woman who was very sweet, bright and knowledgeable about young children. It was comforting to know that so many people had good experiences and also that the nanny agencies that Bright Horizons has contracts with have done all the background checks and training. I will definitely choose this option in the future if we need backup care.(no subject)

I've also used BH back-up care a bunch of times (Pine St location) for my now 16-month-old and am extremely satisfied. (She gets a more detailed daily report from BH than she does from her nanny.) I've been able to arrange care both on a last-minute basis (when nanny calls out sick the night before) and up to a month in advance (when I knew nanny was taking vacation.) The worst part for me is the hand-off - my daughter typically melts down when I leave the room, but I'm told she calms down after 5-10 min. And she always seems to be doing fine when my husband "drops in" for lunch. Staff is super friendly and facility - Pine St, at least - is cheery and clean. (June 2011)(no subject)

I've also used Bright Horizons backup care in 75 Rock and the other one a block away at 600 5th ave. Both were great.... they even called me mid-day to let me know my daughter was doing fine, which I hadn't requested they do. It's a great service! (June 2011)(no subject)
We have used Bright Horizons at 75 Rock in Manhattan for back up care since our son was about a year old (he is 2.5 now). They have been wonderful with him, despite the fact that he hates change and did not deal well with back up care (screamed and cried going there). He was clearly attached to the caregivers by the end of his second day there, and they were great about answering the phone, being very reassuring, checking in with us and really being responsive in every way possible. We have been using Bright Horizons in the Conde Naste building ever since our daughter was under 2 years old (she us now 6) and we cannot say better things about the place and caregivers. The staff is absolutely lovely and attentive. Our daughter loves going there whenever school is closed. (June 2011)
