Backyard Explorers
Backyard Explorers

Backyard Explorers is a small Forest School inspired program in Park Slope for kids to freely explore the elements and take a break from the bustling city. We're play-based, child-led, and love sensory play. We play in the mud, splash in puddles, and get wet in our bathing suits. We dive deep into art and science projects like volcanic explosions, magic potions, and ice painting. At Backyard Explorers we believe in the magic of nature, and all manner of magical outdoor creatures - from fairies to squirrels - play a role in our pretend play and storytelling.

We cap our groups at 4 kids to give them individualized attention, safely continue as a mask-less program, and the freedom to self-direct their own projects. Morning programs run Tuesday-Friday from 9-12pm for ages 3-5. After school programs run Tuesday-Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm for ages 5-7. Pick up for after school is optional from PS 118.

Founder and teacher Cyndi Perczek has been working with kids for 15 years and fell in love with outdoor education after becoming Forest School Certified. With a background in theatre and education, the world of play is always the driving force of her curriculum.

  • Review from the 2023 Summer Camp Survey

Location: Park Slope - 6th St and 5th Av How old was your child when they attended camp this summer? 4 Review: Backyard Explorers is an amazing, TRULY child-led program led by the amazing Cyndi in her backyard. An intimate group of 3-4 kids from 2-4yo congregate in the mornings to play activities she has set up or venture to their own activities in the backyard whether it’s digging for bugs, pretending to go to the moon, or helping with the garden. My son is so happy there, and so is every other child who goes. It’s truly, truly a gem. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? Nothing Would you like to add anything related to COVID and how the camp handled it? It’s outdoors unless it’s really really hot. We’ve been there for over a year and there hasn’t been any outbreaks bc it’s outside and our son wears a mask inside (our choice).
