  • Review from the Spring 2023 Birthing Survey

What month and year was your child born? September 2022 Review: Amazing! As the birthing partner, I was very impressed with the entire Downtown Women’s OB-GYN practice, and thought that Dr. Whitehead was perfect to have at the actual birth. All the doctors were very understanding and put our needs first

What month and year was your child born? April 2023 Review: Excellent, excellent OB! Dr. Whitehead is part of Downtown Women in Soho. We had great experiences with all the OBs and were particularly happy when Dr. Whitehead was our on-call doctor during delivery. She is grounded, explains complicated information in easy to grasp ways, and really focused on consent in the process.

Enthusiastic 2nd recommendation for Dr Whitehead at Downtown Women. She’s the best!

    I really like Dr. Whitehead.
  • Black OBGYN - roundup (2021)

I love Doctor Whitehead. I also adore Doctor Jacqueline Bush, at Methodist. I switched to doctor Whitehead’s practice at the end because Doctor Bush’s practice needs lots of support, they don’t have the resources so there are long wait times! Very very long wait times. And the staff is running around because they’re understaffed. I love doctor Bush so much but I just couldn’t sacrifice the time anymore
  • Black OBGYN - roundup (2021)

I have seen two different fantastic black OBs. When I was in the city, I went to Dr Antonette Whitehead at Downtown Women, and then when I was looking for one in Brooklyn, I started seeing Dr Heather Jones at the Guirguis Group.
  • Black OBGYN

I saw Dr. Whitehead when I went through a miscarriage and she was absolutely wonderful, but as someone else noted, she’s with Downtown Women, which is a practice with 7 OBs and for delivery you get whoever is on call at the hospital at the time, so it’s the luck of the draw. So you can request to see her for any prenatal appointments, I ended up trying to meet all 7 doctors for my appointments though and didn’t end up having her for my delivery. She was my favorite at the group, but I did end up liking most of the other doctors too (with the exception of one that wasn’t my speed...)

    I love doctor whitehead
  • Black OBGYN

I absolutely love Dr. Whitehead! She delivered my baby and was so calm, helpful, great energy - and I credit her with the fact that I ended up with minimal tearing. The one thing is that she is part of a group practice - Downtown Women - and I don’t know if you can request to work with just her? Their usual approach is that you work with all six doctors and whoever is on call when you go into labor does the delivery. All the women at the practice are terrific but they are not all POC.

Another recommendation for Dr Whitehead. She is compassionate, knowledgeable, calm and keeps YOU calm most importantly. I went to her at a very difficult time and she was so patient with me in trying to figure things out. She guided me through a very long, complicated induction but never let on the stress, while being a New mother herself! And she was one of the first doctors to see my second baby! She is amazing!

I also highly recommend Dr. Whitehead. She is so attentive and very easy to talk too. She is the best OB I’ve had. Love her!

The doctor who delivered my baby, Dr Antonette Whitehead, is black, and she was really excellent.
  • Ob/gyn at NYU-Langone

I'd second the recommendation for Dr. Antoinette Whitehead with Downtown Women. She's one of my favorite doctors across the board and she and her practice are affiliated with NYU Langone. She performed a surgery on me there and was on call while I was in labor and helped to deliver my son.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

Dr. Whitehead is the best doctor I've ever had. She is an excellent clinician and she has a calming bedside manner. She always made time to answer all of my questions and ensure that I was involved in every decision. Because of the terrific relationship I had with Dr. Whitehead, I decide not to pursue working with a doula, as it felt like Dr. Whitehead played the role of both doctor and birthing coach.
  • Review from the 2020 Birthing Experience Survey

I appreciated the Downtown Women's approach of cycling through all physicians in the practice throughout my pregnancy. I liked getting to speak with different doctors and getting different opinions to repeated questions, while the whole practice aligned with my non-alarmist approach to care. It's a busy practice and, especially once Covid took hold, that could result in some slightly rushed visits. But I appreciated the care with which the practice handled Covid precautions and safety. Dr. Whitehead performed my c-section and I really couldn't have asked for a better bedside manner. She also oozed competence and confidence, without even a whiff of arrogance, which was immensely helpful in approaching a stressful surgery! She did such a wonderful job distracting me by chatting about our shared connections to Michigan while the anesthesiologist put in my epidural that I didn't realize what she was doing until about halfway through.
  • Need OB recs

I missed the original post but wanted to second Dr Whitehead at Downtown Women. She delivered my second and is amazing. She really listened to my preferences and is a mom herself and just gets it.
  • Need OB recs

Not exactly what you're looking for in terms of location, but Dr. Antonette Whitehead delivered my first baby at Downtown Women - their office is in Soho and I'v been taking a quick cab ride there. She is a black woman and has the most amazing bedside manner. Downtown Women's practice is all female providers and also includes two Asian doctors and one Indian doctor - the other 3 doctors that handle OB patients are white women. The rest of the office staff (including nurses etc.) is probably the same to more diverse in my recollection. They deliver at NYU Langone.
  • OBGYN for C-section

I’m having a scheduled c-section this time around. My doctor is Dr. Whitehead of Downtown Women’s and their practice delivers at NYU. I’ve recommended several friends to the practice, but I feel it’s important to give you some disclaimers. Even though we knew it was a scheduled c-section since the beginning, due to issues I had during my first pregnancy, and they promised me I’d have Dr. Whitehead, they actually scheduled me with Dr. Bahora. The practice is made of women OBs, which is why I liked them initially. I’ve met a lot of them once or twice, but I was very upset that they didn’t keep their promise. In fact, it was a very big issue for me. Additionally, the office is always packed and I find they are always at least an hour late seeing me. Often my husband has to go back to work and misses the appointments because they’re so late. I’ve also made it all the way to Soho from Brooklyn pregnant for appointments and they have told me that they made scheduling errors or mistakes and asked me to come back a different day or time. Overall, I find the office staff to be disorganized and the nurses to often be rude. But, Dr. Whitehead is fantastic, so is Dr. Lajoie. Dr. Bahora is also very good. Dr. Minh, who is the head of the practice is very competent, but a bit terse in terms of bedside manner. There was a blonde doctor, but I forgot her name, who kept yawning during our appointment and was very abrupt. There are a ton of other doctors, and it’s a bit of crap shoot to find out who you will have. They have no problems scheduling you for a c section with someone you have never met. As you can tell, this is not a true endorsement, more like a sharing of my experience. But, I hope it helps. The reality is I’ve left that office in tears more times than I can remember and it’s been a very stressful part of my pregnancy.
  • 2018 Birth Survey

There were about 8 doctors at Downtown Women’s OB-GYN and I had met all of them except Dr Whitehead prior to going in labor. I was actually scheduled to meet her that same week but my baby came 5 weeks early so I met her the day of. She was very nice and although I was in a blur, I do recall her taking good care of me and making sure I delivered safely.
