We go every few weeks and we like it. It is suggested donation for anyone in the tri-state, and if you book your tickets online and go on a weekday, you won’t really deal with lines. Enter on 81st street if you have a stroller. If you do go on a weekend, and if your friends aren’t from the tri-state, it’s worth it to just get a membership. The lines on weekends are really long for non-members plus it’s tax deductible. I think for family membership, you can only get 2 adults in, unless you upgrade to Family Adventurer which is more expensive. Not that you asked, but Shake Shack is a block away, and it’s always a nice way to start the adventure. Otherwise there is a cafe downstairs.

It can be easier and less expensive in the long run to buy a membership--you get to bypass the line (you can use the member entrance downstairs), get free special exhibit passes, and you can bring guests for the entire year! It is stroller friendly, but can get crowded. Go on a weekday if possible.

we love the museum. We had friends come in last year and I ended up getting a membership mainly to see the special exhibits and given the cost of that for all of us, it made sense and we ended up going a couple more times. I would check the exhibits. I know that the butterfly exhibit will open again soon and that might be worth checking out too. Stroller friendly but when it is crowded just requires a lot of patience!

I went with my almost 4 yo during Feb break. It’s stroller friendly but the waiting time for the elevators can take awhile when there’s a crowd NY residents (and I think NJ) are “pay what you can”. You can pre-book the tickets online but once you arrive, you will still need to line up to show your NY ID and receive the physical tickets and map. The only time you skip the line completely is if you pay full price for the tickets or if you are a member. My husband took me here on dates in our 20s! And my toddler had a great time (we wrapped up after 1.5 h) so I think your group will enjoy it. See whatever you can and don’t worry about “finishing” the museum with the kids.
  • Science lab type after school program for middle schoolers?

AMNH has revamped their middle school programs and they now seem to cost a fortune, but their financial aid looks generous. See here: https://www.amnh.org/learn-teach/children-and-families/science-alliance-program When my kids were doing them, the middle school programs were excellent.
