Anyone know about “Wilderness Adventures” teen pro...
I second the recommendation for Adventure Treks. I found the program through a post here on PSP Tweens last winter and my 14 year old son went this past summer to Pacific Northwest Adventure. It was an amazing experience. My son had never camped and they do go on some true backcountry hikes. He came home already planning his next trip. As a tip, he flew solo via Alaska Airlines to Seattle and they were great. They allow a parent escort all the way to the gate at no charge and didn't require the unaccompanied minor fee for 13+ year olds. He has flown alot with us so he wasn't nervous and Adventure Treks met him on the other side right at the gate. Jet Blue was the other option but their flights were sold out. The other major airlines (American, United and Delta) required the UM fee of over $300 roundtrip which was almost the cost of the flight itself.Anyone know about “Wilderness Adventures” teen pro...
I highly recommend Adventure Treks. My daughter did the Northern CA program last year after she had aged out of her beloved overnight camp in Maine the year before. I did a LOT of research and found that Adventure Treks fit our values the best. But it was still a leap of faith to send my Brooklynite into the woods with people I had only spoken to on the phone. It turned out to be great. She loved it and we have her signed up for an advanced Alaska(!) trip for this coming summer. The program opened up a whole new world to her and emphasized a self reliance and community environment that had a really positive impact on her and is visible months later. I recommend calling to speak in depth with any program that you're interested in and asking about the things that are most important to you and relevant to your kid. I'd be happy to speak with anyone who is in the later stages of making a decision about Adventure Treks. It's a wonderful experience to be able to give our city kids, and I remain jealous of my daughter's summer/s!2018 Summer Camp Reviews
Age of child: 15 Summer 2018 Review: This outdoor adventure program was excellent for my 15 year old (rising 10th grader) who had aged out of her beloved overnight camp. The program went to the woods of northern California and included hiking, rock climbing, swimming/mountain lakes, rafting and kayaking and a day of mountain biking. The activities were rigorous and the camping was rough -- only using tents when needed, carrying in all their food, multi-day trips to the back country. My daughter had never done much outdoor camping or hiking (other than one-two night trips with her overnight camp) and was very apprehensive about it and ended up loving it, and has signed up for an Alaska trip next year. She was physically fit from after school sports and really dug in to the activities and moreover the community of the program. From my end, it seemed really well run program, aligned well with our Park Slope values and drew a good group of kids. It's expensive but in the range of all these programs, includes some camping gear that would be costly and I believe offers some financial aid. The programs are very teen-centered (not a scaled down adult program) and knew what to expect from teens, how to communicate and how to be safe. I encourage anyone interested to give them a call -- they spent a lot of time on the phone with us and finding the right program which was particularly important since I did not know anyone who had done the program with them before. We highly recommend this organization.
