Location: Manhattan, but easy from PS by train: 500 8th Ave., between 35th & 36th Type: Musical theater Specific program name: Off-Broadway Junior Musical Production Held: Weekend Review: Is your 7-10-year-old obsessed with Broadway? Mine was, and he spent Sunday afternoons this spring with other kids just like him, singing, dancing, and acting with seasoned instructors, for two quality performances of "Aladdin Jr." at a real Off-Broadway theater. He loved all of it; and we especially loved that the program didn't take any of our kid's after-school time. Kids have to be prepared to spend some time sitting quietly and observing while others rehearse; there are upsides and downsides to that. However, because there are two casts, each kid has a buddy working on the same lines, songs, choreography. Skills developed: Cooperation, teamwork, how a musical production comes together. In most of the musical theater programs for kids under 11 in PS, children work on original musicals; this is an opportunity to do Broadway stuff. What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? I wish we had been prepared that because my son's character doesn't appear until halfway through, he didn't have much opportunity for participation in the first few sessions. Age of child: 10 Based on an experience from the 2016-2017 school year
