A little known secret for New Yorkers is that Florida school kids go back to school the third week of August. What does this mean for New Yorkers like us whose camps typically shut down about that time? Vacationing in Florida in late August means no lines at the major theme parks (attached is a photo from Busch Gardens in Tampa). Furthermore, prices are low for hotels since it is the off-season.
"But wait..." you say, "Isn't it really hot?" Ha! No worse than New York (and actually this year Florida was cooler).
"But wait...." you also say, "Isn't it hurricane season in Florida?" Hmmmph!, Hurricane Earl is heading to the Northeast today, not Florida.
So next year when you're thinking about what to do those last weeks of summer, think of Florida!
