Important Reminder About Choosing a Daycare/Preschool

note-34670 640

Dear PSP Members,

There have been a few situations in the past weeks that warrant us posting information that you should be aware of regarding Daycares and Preschools.

Update on Nanny Posts to the Classifieds (September 2012)

September 8, 2012:

Hey All,

This summer has been busy for the Park Slope Parents Nanny moderators.  We've had a number of fraudulent recommendations to the PSP Classifieds (and many more that didn't make it to the list). We've been on the phone with recommenders, shaking the trees for "the real story."  Most recently we had an employer let a nanny go because she realized that the references she had relied on to hire her nanny were fake. It was heartbreaking for us as well as the family.

Safety Reminders for Your Home

Earlier this month, a PSP member came home to an intruder in her home. It was after she had put her toddler down for a nap that she discovered him hiding in her bathroom. The intruder was able to force his way into her apartment because the lock had not been deadbolted. This is a reminder to the community that locking the knob or lever lock is not enough to protect against break-ins and should never be relied upon as the main security lock.

Coming Together in Changing Times

Dear Park Slope Parents members,

Like many of you, the past few days have been emotional for many on the PSP team. We are grateful for the Park Slope Parents community more than ever. We are a strong network of 5,000+ diverse Brooklyn families with different backgrounds, different beliefs, and different cultures. That difference makes us a community we are proud to be part of. This is a time for us to come together through these difficult times and honor and respect our diversity.

In addition to our Advice List, we have over 100+ specialty groups including the LGBTQ group, African American Caribbean Heritage Group, Spanish Group, Volunteer Corps and many others. Members of the LGBTQ community are concerned and we’re working on answers to questions of marriage and adoption laws in light of the election results.  We’re also looking into interest in a South Asian Group (in partnership with the existing Mixed Masala group) and Mixed-Race Group.  If you need support or have questions and concerns, please reach out. If you are not a PSP member or would like to renew your membership, follow the steps here.

We have had members asking each other questions including where to rally, how to explain the election results to your child, and books recommendations that easily explain the electoral college. Here are the events that you can attend over the next few days:

Through all of this uncertainty we want to stay focused on creating positive change.  We are organizing great outreach events with local not-for-profits around the holidays—Thanksgiving pie drives, gift drives, wrapping parties and holiday parties for homeless shelters. We are also reaching out to local officials and other organizations about having in-person events to strengthen and grow our community and celebrate our differences. Stay tuned on ways to channel your energy into doing good.

We’re all in this wonderful parenting journey together. Let's bring our collective wisdom and expertise and show what being great truly is.

IMPORTANT: Park Slope Parents is moving off Yahoo! Groups

coming-soon-1898936 640

Heads up!

We're moving off Yahoo!

Great News! We’re moving off Yahoo! groups for our Classifieds and Advice/Community Groups in the coming weeks!

Launch Date: December 1

NOTE: YAHOO! GROUPS HAS BEEN GLITCHY so it's great timing!

Here are some of the GREAT things about the move:

  • No more invites   The new system allows us to add you to groups. There will still be a short delay as it’s still not an automated process, but no more looking for invites in spam.
  • Easy login   You can easily login to the new system to search for messages. No more YahooIDs or need for Yahoo at all—ever again.
  • Streamlining   The new system will sync one email rather than multiple emails for Yahoo and our membership site (Club Express). No more, “your message didn’t post because the email is different than the one on Yahoo!”
  • #Hashtags   We’ll be using hashtags for commonly posted message so you can easily find things such as #Nanny, #RealEstate, or #Anonymous posts.  Easier Posting Insert photos, attachments and links into messages easily and quickly.  Search The new site has a working search! (If you've noticed the most recent search results end mid-September.)
  • Archives   We’re moving 15 years of messages to the new system. You’ll be able to search old discussions and topics (e.g., the history of a nanny’s employment).  More delivery options Along with individual and digest options, there’s finally an option for a daily summary you can skim and decide if you want to read more!

PSP's Advice and Classifed Group Left Yahoo, Moved to

It's happening!

We've moved off Yahoo!

We've transitioned onto our new platform December 1st. As of NOON Thursday, November 30th we stopped approving messages on our Advice/Community and Classifieds Yahoo Groups. If you sent/send us something we will direct you to post the message to our new group. You'll receive instructions for posting once we’re live so it doesn't get lost.

Please do some quick prep work so things work as seamlessly as possible. Add these emails to your safe sender and contacts so messages come to your inbox (and not spam):

Consistency: Current members of the Yahoo Advice/Community and Classifieds will start receiving emails from the new groups at the same frequency as before. Your message delivery will stay the same as your Yahoo preference (yay!). If you signed up for one of these groups but never got around to getting on the group you'll start receiving messages as well.
Messages will come from our new email addresses:

Streamlining: Messages will be sent to your membership-related email (where you paid your membership fee). You can easily change this once we’re live. Flexibility. We’ll send you instructions on changing your email or settings tomorrow.  NOTE: Nothing will change with your baby groups, career groups, dads/moms group or any other specialty groups at this time. It's gonna be great, but do be patient with us. These changes may come with some bumps in the road. We’re confident that this system will be a huge improvement (or we wouldn’t be doing it) but it may mean a kink or two for a few of you. We'll get you fixed up- promise!

Our team will be on hand to assist anyone who needs help at:
