Comment:  I cannot say enough wonderful things about Nicole and Barbara; working with them was exactly the experience I had hoped for when I chose to work with a midwife. Visits always started on time and both Barbara and Nicole spent a lot of time talking to my wife and me in every appointment - answering our questions or just chit chatting. As a result, I felt like we got to know both midwifes well and developed a close, trusting relationship with them. They have a non-alarmist, pretty low-tech approach to care, which I liked, but they also didn't hesitate to refer me to the hospital for follow-up tests when it seemed like my fluid might be low (it was). In fact, Barbara has such a good and long-standing relationship with the hospital, she was able to get us an appointment within an hour of being in her office. And when she hadn't heard from us within a few hours (the hospital was packed), she called me from her personal cell phone to check in and make sure everything was ok. We ended up delivering with Nicole (they alternate on-call days) and she couldn't have been more attentive throughout labor and delivery. She coached us through every step of labor at home and knew exactly what was happening based on the sound of my voice. She was ready to go when we got to the hospital; she helped me get into the best position for me for delivery, coached my wife perfectly so she could be an active, helpful part of the delivery, and used some kind of magic combination of time, lubrication and warm towels to keep me from tearing. I feel lucky to be able to say that, even though things didn't go exactly as planned and I ended up with a high-risk birth, I had a warm, loving, and very personal delivery experience thanks to Nicole.Based on January 2017 birth experience

Comment:  Barbara Sellars is absolutely amazing and delivered both of my babies with completely intervention-free births, no tearing and quick recoveries. She is extremely experienced, professional and no-nonsense. I trusted her completely throughout both of my pregnancies and births. Nicole, the other midwife in her practice, was wonderful as well during all of the prenatal appointments and I would have felt completely comfortable with her if she had ended up the one on call for my birth as well. I highly highly recommend!Based on September 2016 birth experience

Comment:  Nicole and Barbara of CBS Midwifery were fantastic! Because they have a small clinic=they take only 8 pregnant clients a month and there are just the two of them--I got to know them very well. I found them to be the perfect blend of practicality and support. They are very science based, and yet are sensible about risk, understanding that every family has their own risk tolerance. They were great about explaining what the standard practice was and what their opinion was based on my history, whether certain routine tests were actually necessary or helpful. I felt very confident in the level of care I received from them. They were very supportive of every choice that I made and were willing to work with me. They also squeezed me in several times when I missed appointments through my own spacing out, and later on as I wanted membrane sweeps etc to try to get labor started. The first appointment is 1 hour. Subsequent appointments are 30 mins. I was almost always seen on time--sometimes early if I got there early. I never felt rushed and always left feeling my questions were answered.Based on 12/2016 birth experience

Comment:  Barbara and Nicole were amazing! I had more appointments with Nicole than Barbara because of a scheduling fluke and Nicole ended up delivering my baby, but they are very similar and I knew I was in good hands with both of them. They are both extremely knowledgable and good communicators. They explained everything well and always knew the studies behind their advice. They were available by email, text, or phone whenever I needed them. I had as much time as I needed at every appointment to ask questions, but they were always so thorough, I rarely needed to ask any. I can't recommend them highly enough!Based on May 2016 birthing experience

Comment:  I also had a terrific experience with CBS Midwifery. For whatever reason the way the scheduling worked out with appointments I ended up seeing Nicole a ton more than Barbara throughout the pregnancy, but then Barbara was present for my delivery. Both are incredibly calm, reassuring, and positive, while also communicating a lot of confidence. I arrived at the hospital after a lightning fast labor, fully dilated, and panicked and Barbara was calm, calm, calm throughout. I would definitely go back to CBS for another pregnancy.(I should say that my only negative experience was that I felt really misled by the billing company CBS works with as to what the services would cost based on my medical insurance, so the bill I ended up footing was about 3x what I anticipated. I would make sure to do your research and be thorough in investigating what the cost could be if you do have insurance that reimburses some/all of midwifery services.)

Comment:  I used CBS for both of my children and I seriously can not recommend them enough. I LOVE both Barbara and Nicole...I delivered both my boys with Barbara and could not have had better birthing experiences, not because my births were easy, but because Barbara was so supportive and in tune with what I needed/wanted throughout my pregnancy and labor. Not only is she unbelievably experienced, but she is truly an advocate for women and women's health. She is straightforward and clinical, and warm and caring as well. I felt 100% confident in both her and Nicole's abilities. For my first son, I am sure that with any other provider I would have ended up with a c-section...but with Barbara's expertise and patience I was able to have a natural birth. More importantly though, even though I really hoped to have a vaginal birth, if she had told me at any time that I needed a c-section, I would have trusted her 100% that it was clinically necessary and not for convenience. Both Nicole and Barbara take ample time during appointments to answer any questions and guide you through the pregnancy experience. For me, the best part was knowing that Barbara or Nicole would be with me from the minute I got to the hospital until delivery...they literally are with you through the entire labor/delivery. Anyway, I could go on and on... Good luck with your decision and congrats on your pregnancy.

Comment:  I used Barbara Sellers for both of my pregnancies. She is fantastic. My first delivery was everything you would never want and involved every intervention imaginable, but she stuck with me and never pressured me into anything I didn't want to do. Eventually, after 39 hours, I had a c-section. I went back to her when I was pregnant again and she encouraged me to try a V-BAC, which I was able to have. She is wonderful and I highly recommend her.

Comment:  I delivered with Barbara in the birth center in May 2015. She is amazing and I would recommend/use her again in a heartbeat. I echo the previous posters in her no nonsense non-alarmist manner. She has been delivering at the birth center (over 5k babies) for a very long time and will advocate for you. I saw midwifery of manhattan (Columbus circle) for my first trimester and switched to Barbara. Barbara only takes 7 mothers/month so she gets to know you well and I've never waited more than 5 minutes to see her. I preferred knowing which midwife would deliver my child and preferred her bedside manner. She is very accessible and responds to calls/texts quickly.I've seen Nicole for some of he visits and has a very similar if not same philosophy as Barbara.

Comment:  Barbara Sellars was my midwife for my first pregnancy/delivery in 2013 (before Nicole joined the practice) and I'm using her again for my upcoming 2nd! She was amazing and I cannot recommend her more highly. She has a very no-nonsense, non-alarmist style which I appreciated and was a good fit for me. I delivered in the birthing center vaginally with no interventions...granted I was fully dilated when I got to the hospital, which made her job pretty easy, but she helped expertly through the pushing process in a way that prevented any tearing and ran interference with the hospital nurses who were trying to get in the way. And it was really nice to build a relationship with one midwife (now I guess it is two) and know that they will be the person there for you at the moment of truth instead of a group of midwives where you are not sure which one you will end up with for the delivery. I definitely highly recommend her if you are looking for a midwife that delivers at the birthing center.

Comment:  Review: I cannot praise Barbara and Nicole (the other half of CBS Midwifery) highly enough. They are so warm, kind, flexible, funny, supportive, and pragmatic in their prenatal care. I seriously looked forward to my office visits, even at the end when they happen every week, because it meant I'd get a chance to see Barbara and/or Nicole and I knew I'd get great advice on coping with pregnancy symptoms. My pregnancy was not high risk, but I had a ton of annoying issues plus one serious scare with prenatal testing (that turned out fine) and Nicole and Barbara were incredibly accessible and supportive throughout; they jumped on the phone with me multiple times to figure out how to deal with situations that came up between my office visits. This was my second pregnancy with Barbara, so I can speak to how amazing she is during delivery itself - once again warm, supportive, and funny (last time she was cracking jokes with my partner at the same time that she helped me push the baby out!). This time around, I ended up switching to an OB at 37 weeks because my baby was breech so I needed a C-section. Barbara knew that due to a complicated insurance situation, it would be much better for me financially to have the surgery at NYU than St Luke's (she usually delivers at the Birthing Center there), so she made a bunch of phone calls and used connections from over 30 years delivering babies in NYC (!) and found an OB who was willing to take me on even at that very late date. When I'd tried to make similar calls myself, I literally had office staff laugh at the thought, but Barbara made it happen. That's just one example of how hard and smart she works to make sure her patients get what they need. Insurance: She is not part of an insurance network - you pay upfront and then she bills insurance and they reimburse you. She and her office staff make this process very straightforward and are very thoughtful about how to bill in order to maximize your reimbursement. For both of my pregnancies, I ended up being completely reimbursed for every dollar I'd spent.Based on a October birth
